  • University libraries have been attempting to reorganize their space through new building construction and remodeling to cope with the rapid changes in information and communication technologies and university environment. These changes seem to reflect the need for the shift of the university library functions toward the facilitator role of enabling continuous learning and research through space reorganization beyond the traditional supporter role of preserving and supplying library materials and providing learning space and services to university members. Despite all these changes of university library space functions, however, their assessment has been still limited to the library users' satisfaction and usage changes before and after library building renovation or new construction, calling for the need to develop proper measurement tools for evaluating the library functions as learning commons that reflect university vision and goals. Therefore, this study intends to analyze the trend of space reorganization practices in university libraries and the studies of evaluating its effect, in order to develop tools to evaluate the effectiveness of space reorganization and to provide basic data for future space reorganization and assessment strategies.

  • In the construction field, there has been a recent and unprecedented increase in the research and development of modernized Korean traditional buildings, This is because, in today's modern society, the basic needs for survival have already been met and more people are now recognizing the importance of the identity of our unique culture. It is therefore timeous to consider not just how to preserve and use Korean traditional buildings, but also how to develop them into more industrialized and modernized buildings in a practical way. Recently, the direction has been focused on the industrialization of modernized Korean traditional buildings, including their evolution, and development, as well as on the numerous cases where construction has been delayed. In order to industrialize modernized Korean traditional buildings, we need to standardize their form and actively introduce current IT (Information Technology). In order to achieve this, it is absolutely necessary to change from the CADD (Computer Aided Design and Drafting) system to the BIM (Building Information Modeling) system, which reflects the concept of Virtual Architecture. Therefore, the aim of this study is to discuss the possibilities of using BIM system for industrialization of modernized Korean traditional buildings, extend the foundation of the form library, and develop an intelligent modeler. It is also necessary to exemplify a case model for modernized Korean traditional buildings to which BIM is applied.

  • This study examines the establishment of Sea-po (서포) in the opening period of Korea at the end of the 19th century. The role they played, the particular situations and their geographical characteristics are researched, The earliest sea-po was Koh-je-hong sea-po, which was established in Taekwang-kyo at the end of 1880s. Around 1905, a specialised book distribution system was set up with establishement of Chu-han-yung book store, Kim-sang-man book store, Jesuit book store, Tae-dong su-si, Kae-myung sea-kwan, Tong-wha seo-kwan. The owners of the seo-pos were pioneers in introducing modern culture with nationalistic consciousness, although they were primarily businessmen and their social origins varied. The primary role of seo-pos was selling a variety of books but some combined printing and publication of books as well. It seems that publication business took roots around 1908, though it is difficult to know the accurate dates of first attempts. Some sea-pas offered book rental services for poor people who could not easily afford to purchase books. A certain amount of deposit had to be paid to benefit from the services. Jesuit Bookstore in Pyungyang had a library facility with a large stock or books in the same building open to public for free. These sea-pas started mainly in Seoul and Pyungyang, which were traditional centers for economic and cultural affairs. Early introduction of foreign cultures and commercial developments in these areas contributed to the establishment of sea-pos. The sea-po which took charge of book distribution in the provinces was set up around 1906. One of the important findings of this study is that the geographical distribution of sea-po shows the following three characteristics. First is that the area such as Seoul, Taegu and Chunju were the traditional centers of publishing culture from which Panggak-bon(방각본) emerged. Second characteristic is Pyungyang and the surrounding Pyungbuk province, and harbors like Inchon and Pusan, which had the benefits of early spread of modem cultures. Third characteristic is Kaesung and the surrounding Hwanghae province which bridged Pyungyang and Seoul. The reception of foreign cultures stimulated the commercial spirits traditionally attributed to Kaesung to establish sea-pas most actively.

  • The Digital Library is the integrated system of Information Retrieval System(IRS) and Database Management system(DBMS). In the Digital Library environment where dynamic query and update processes are required, however, the existing transaction management methods cause the following problems. First, since the traditional consistency criteria is too restrictive, it causes increment of query processing time and cannot guarantee the reflection of recency. Second, query result could be unreliable because the consistency criteria between source data and metadata is not defined. This paper models the access to metadata based on Dublin Core as query transactions and update transactions, and gives the efficient method to manage them. Particularly, this paper describes the consistency criteria of metadata which takes it Into consideration the consistency between the result of query transaction and status of source data in the Digital Library, that is different from the consistency criteria in traditional transaction management. It also presents analysis of the view point of query transaction to reflect recency and proposes metadata management to guarantee recency within metadata consistency.

  • User fees have been employed by libraries as far back as the mid-1800s in both United States and England. By the late 1800s and early : 1900s, the charging of user fees for some library products and services had become a reality in many public and academic libraries. Yet the practice has created controversy when computer-aided reference service began to charge especially in the publicly funded libraries. There are two extream arguments on library reference service fees : one is for and the other is against. most fee o n.0, pponents base their stand on morality. They argue that charging fees for any service is wrong because it violates the user's right of access to information and regard it as an act of decrease human life chances as well as an act of censor. But those who favour fees argue that it is necessary to separate the rhetoric from the reality and to distinguish what libraries are from what they do. The study revealed that library has two options. One is strict free of charge and the other is charging for selected library services. Whatever options the library may take, library had to decide an overall reference service policy. The level and scope of service, audience, necessary fund (who and how) and many other physical and metaphysical things must be considered. However, the first option will necessary be to limit services while there is no loss of traditional philosophical service element. Yet, if to provide a wide range of choices and to create conditions more hospitable to competition from the private information sector and for better evolutional selection, the second option(fee-based service) gives more benefit to the users while there is a loss of fundamental service philosophy.

  • The categorization of libraries into several types supports an understanding of the concept of library and also provides a framework for the practice of library management, such as planning and management. Although a 4-type categorization with public, academic, special, and school libraries is the most traditional and general approach to categorization, the definition of each type has been set enumeratively and inductively, so that it has weaknesses in its clarity between categories and in its applicability to a new environment. In this conceptual paper, deductive and analytical criteria for the 4-type categorization are suggested based on characteristics of information needs. Implications of the suggestions about library management, and especially, the meaning and impact of stakeholders on library management are discussed. Additionally, this paper attempts to put forth a conceptual link between library and information.

  • Due to the inferior condition of local library reference service, an air of indifference about users, and the increase in Internet resources, cooperative reference service in domestic libraries tend to be stagnant. The increase in Internet resources was reconsidered, aside from traditional library reference service, based on question and answer service. It shed new light on the importance of indirect service, which is focused on reliable knowledge base construction. This study analyzed cooperative reference service, which is managed by the Japanese Diet library that pursued indirect service contrary to ours. Based on that, it suggested a new takeoff possibility for Korean cooperative reference service.
