  • For the purpose of designing more successful cancer research, the strategy for cancer study in the field of Traditional Korean Medicine(TKM) during the 21th century was examined from the analysis of trends on cancer study in traditional korean medicine. The results were summarized as follows: 1. So far cancer research in TKM was chiefly done on cytotoxicity, side-effects by chemotherapy, tumor immunology, apoptosis, survival time with S-180 and pulmonary colonization assay and also clonogenic assay, cell adhesion assay, angiogenesis, cell-differentiation and side-effect by radiotherapy were partly performed. 2. It may be ideal that we should study synergistic effect between constituent drugs of prescriptions, tumor immunology, combined therapy between western and oriental medicines by reducing side-effect by radiotherapy and chemotherapy and antimetastasis according to the characteristics of oriental medicine chiefly and also supplement the studies on molecular biology, gene therapy, angiogensis and signal transduction. 3. We had better do specific-field research in cooperation between oriental medical colleges and Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine(KIOM) as well as study a target cancers such as hepatic cancer, pulmonary cancer and gastric cancer more intensively than all cancers domestically. 4. Our country must keep communication with China having many clinical data, Taiwan chiefly doing the combined tharapy between oriental and western medicines, Japan having done basic study actively on cancer.

  • Objective: This study aimed to evaluate which information of cancer patients should be collected for the Korean medicine cancer registry in order to assess the efficacy and safety of Korean medicine (KM) treatment and to identify Korean medical prognostic predictors. Methods: A total of fifteen Korean medical specialists completed an online survey questionnaire including items about general characteristics of cancer patients and clinical practice patterns. Results: The four main types of cancer at Korean medical hospitals were breast, lung, stomach, and colorectal cancer. The majority of patients with cancer at Korean medical hospitals were in the advanced or metastatic stage (50.0%). The prominent purposes of KM treatment were to alleviate cancer-related symptoms, reduce the side effects of conventional therapy, and improve quality of life. The major options for treatment were traditional herbal medicine (THM), acupuncture, moxibustion, thermotherapy, pharmacoacupuncture, and meditation, with THM being the most frequently used (35.7%). Almost all Korean medical specialists (93.9%) used syndrome differentiation in clinical practice and identified over half the cancer patients as deficiency syndrome (57.2%). Conclusion: Physicians considered the primary goal of KM treatment for cancer patients to be symptom management since advanced or metastatic stage patients were the majority at Korean medical hospitals. THM were the most common treatment option and syndrome differentiation was used by almost all physicians. Further research is needed to monitor and ensure optimal KM treatment for patients with cancer.

  • Objectives: This study was performed to review the research trends in the treatment of eating disorder in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Methods: The CNKI database (China National Knowledge Infrastructure) was searched under the key words ‘Eating Disorder’, ‘Anorexia Nervosa’, and ‘Bulimia Nervosa’. Results: Thirteen articles were selected. These included 2 studies on bulimia nervosa, and 11 studies on anorexia nervosa. According to study design, studies were classified into 1 randomized controlled trial, 2 single group before-and-after studies, and 8 case reports. According to therapy method, they included 11 herbal medicine studies, and 2 complex treatment studies. The most common pattern identification was ‘liver qi depression’ (肝氣鬱結), and the most used herb was ‘Root of Bupleurum falcatum’ (柴胡). Most of the studies showed effective results. Conclusions: The results of our study indicated that TCM clinical studies on eating disorder were being conducted more actively than in Korean medicine. Korean medical treatment might be effective to relieve eating disorder symptoms. In the future, more scientifically designed clinical studies should be performed to prove the effectiveness of traditional Korean medicine treatment on eating disorder.

  • Anal Therapy is another way of taking medicine. It is a traditional pathway but not available in common situation. Nevertheless, It has many benifect and usefulness, it has not treated so much. Through Anal Therapy, the valid compound of Herb med can be reach to the desination in theory of the organism and loca1 medical action. The former is called Jung-Chei Theory(整體論), which is the one of the most important basements in building traditional Korean medicine. As there are many kinds of Anal therapy, this study use reservation type. Sosihotang(SSHT) is one of the well-known korean medicines for a long time. It is used for the treatment of such dieases as infectious diseases, hepatic diseases and gastroenteritis and so on. In this study, the author investigated the effect of an aqueous extract of SSHT by Anal therapy(Reservative Enema) in anaphylactic shock. The following results were obtained 1. SSHT inhibited anaphylactic shock 100% with a dose of 1.0 g/kg 1 hr before intraperitoneal injection of compound 48/80. SSHT significantly reduced serum histamine contents induced by compound 48/80. 2. SSHT (0.1 g/kg) also inhibited to 30.9% (P<0.05)) local cutaneous anaphylactic reaction activated by anti-dinitrophenyl (DNP) IgE. 3. The validity rate of reservative enema is as much as oral pathway. 4. In addition, SSHT dose-dependently inhibited the histamine release from the peritoneal mast cells by compound 48/80 or anti-DNP IgE. These results provide evidence that Anal Therapy(Reservative enema) of SSHT may be beneficial in the treatment of systemic and local anaphylactic reaction. Moreover, I wish another much sincere study of Anal Therapy (Reservative enema) would be obtained.
