BIM Modeling and Architectonic Characteristics of Bended-Joint Components of the Yoon Jeung Residence (윤증고택의 BIM 부재모델링과 꺾음부의 구축적 특성)

  • The Yoon Jeung residence is a well-known and prototypical aristocratic house example showing typical and interesting characteristics of the traditional houses in the middle region of Korea. When it comes to understanding the architectonic characteristics of a Korean traditional house, it was not easy to actually capture the compositional and/or constructional knowledge of the building even though it is a wooden building with many wooden members showing their compositional relations. Now with the help of the BIM tool, the Building Information Modeling tool, we could actually be able to compare and analyze each member and their compositional relations. In this paper we examine the unique traditional composition method used in extending the building's structural sections utilizing the bended-joint characteristics of traditional buildings with exemplar case of the Yoon Jeung residence. Thereby we examine those relationships among three major compositional parts namely the plan based spatial compositions, the upper wooden compositions and the roof forms so as to specify the building's typical characteristics with reasonably acceptable causes. The inner and outer block of the residence are handled with their bended-joints with more detailed knowledge of categorization by way of joint relationships among members.

  • This investigation relates generally to windows and doors for traditional Korean houses(Hanok) and, more particularly, to windows and doors for traditional Korean houses which have a lattice structure that can minimize heat loss in the winter. In order to accomplish the above objective, the present invention provides a door for traditional Korean houses, including a structure of a lattice door framed with vertical lattice frames and horizontal lattice frames which are arranged in a regular periodic pattern.

Computational Analysis of Air Flows Inside Korean Traditional House (친환경 전통건축의 내부기류 전산해석)

  • The present investigation is to examine the thermal behaviors of air flows inside Korean traditional house made of the construction materials transmitted. The methodology is numerical predictions of air flows depend on the temperature distribution inside the indoor spaces. The transient computational simulations are performed along with the different house types, weather condition, and operating time. Thermal properties of building units have been obtained by the parallel measurements and utilized in the numerical works. Consequently, the details of flows and temperature of air in the houses illustrate the thermal design of the traditional Korean house satisfy the requirements of human living.

  • The aim of this study is how to understand of structural and elemental landscape image in suburban village. Nowadays, it is well known fact that suburban villages are most likely to be invaded by urbanization. Therefore, the research is focused on how the image of suburb has been changed, what patterns have been created in residential area, what are the different outcomes from different distance, and what are the changes in types of buildings, at particular village called Doojeong in Pyeongtaek city. When collecting supplemental information, elders in village have been participated in comparison of traditional and foreign. The village shows significant characteristics of such phenomenon. According to the research, there are three results. First, ironically, the structural patterns of the village is concentric as seen on urban garden, yet they do not have central function. Second, traditional homes are transformed into functional shape. The most popular roof design that takes 65 percent of whole is modernized flat roof shape. Hanok (Korean traditional house) style is disappearing. Third, due to the massive barn buildings and their monochrome, the beauty of community and architectural harmony are buried.

A Study on the Activation Method of Wearing Hanbok (20대 남녀의 한복 착용 활성화 방안에 대한 연구)

  • This paper identified the values and awareness of Koreans in 20s regarding Hanbok, the traditional clothing of Korea, and proposed an approach to promote the traditional clothing culture. The subject of the survey were male and female Koreans in their 20s who wear modern street clothes in places people frequently visit including in the metropolitan area and Chungcheong-do as well as those who wear Hanbok in Seoul and Jeonju, Jeollabuk-do. In accordance with the analysis of the survey, Koreans in their 20s rented Hanok rather than buying it. The respondents wore Hanbok for events, festivals or national holidays or while travelling. Elements to improve in Hanbok rental services were designs, materials, washing and stains. The decision factors for renting Hanbok were 'personal tendency' and 'advice from an expert.' While Koreans in their 20s had a positive awareness of Hanbok, they thought it was difficult to buy, rent and put on Hanbok and that it was not comfortable to wear. There was not sufficient opportunity and means to wear Hanbok due to insufficient accessories or shoes to match. On the basis of the analysis of the survey results, the following approach was proposed for the development of the traditional clothing culture. First of all, develop traditional clothing designers who can satisfy the personalities of Koreans in their 20s. It is necessary to develop experience-focused and participatory programs that provide systematic education regarding traditional clothing to pass down this tradition. In addition, it is necessary to create a social and cultural atmosphere that enables the Koreans in their 20s to easily wear Hanbok by popularizing Hanbok.

Heat Treatment of Dimension Lumber and Roundwood Used for Hanok Above $170^{\circ}C$

  • Korean traditional buildings, Hanok, are mostly constructed with dimension lumbers and roundwoods. They are hardly kiln-dried without severe defects, thus usually air-dried from some months to an year. Dimension lumbers and roundwoods were heat-treated above $170^{\circ}C$ and drying defects were examined. Temperature rising curves of all dimension timbers used for this study show one or two deflection points. The time when the temperature at 37.5mm depth reached at $100^{\circ}C$ for spruce dimension heat-treated at $170^{\circ}C$ was twice longer than that heat-treated at $190^{\circ}C$. There were many internal checks in roundwoods of $148mm{\Phi}$, while surface checks were apparently closed at the end of heat treatment. The drying time of $300{\times}300mm$ dimensions with 65mm hole was shorter than that without hole by half.

Analysis on the moving line of Yangjundang and Daesanru in Sangju (상주 양진당과 대산루의 동선요소 분석)

  • In the Western and Oriental architecture, corridor and stairs have not been important from the whole architectural composition. The purpose of this study is to analyze their elements from theoretical viewpoint of modern architecture. The subject of analysis are Yangjindang and Daesanru of the Mid-Chosun Dynasty in Sangju. The conclusions are the followings : First, the moving line in the Western and Oriental architecture has the linear axis, and in general moving axis is straighten in Hanok architecture. But unlike common traditional architecture, the two buildings are right-angled in the moving axies. Second, Toenmaru in Yangjindang is the element of visual experience in the whole architectural space as promenade architecture called by Le Corbusier. On the other hand, Toenmaru in Daesanru plays a role the space of thinking in extending a visual field to the nature than its pure function. Third, the stairs of Yangjindang is diagonal shape with a role of entrance, but that of Daesanru was concealed in the wall as interior step. Yangjindang has two different stairs. One is broad and shallow stairs with ceremonial or public expression, and the other is narrow and steep stairs with unstable or private expression. This paper intends to show the latent architectural possibility of our traditional architecture.

Types of Perceptions of the New Hanbok Among Women in Their 20s -Focusing on Jeollanam-do (20대 여성의 신한복에 대한 인식유형 -전남지역을 중심으로-)

  • This study attempted to classify the types of perceptions of the new Hanbok, focusing on female college students in their 20s, and to analyze the characteristics of each type. This study was conducted with the Q methodology and analyzed with the QUANL pc program. The perceptions of the new Hanbok among female college students in their 20s were classified into four types: Type 1: modern/practical, Type 2: convenient/practical, Type 3: temporary/accessible, and Type 4: convenient/traditional. Type 1 emphasized the selection of Western clothing fabric, matching zipper/buttons, and achromatic colors. Type 2 highlighted a design that can be worn as daily clothing by combining materials that are convenient for laundering. Type 3 stressed the operation of new Hanbok rental stores so that it is easy to access and accept new Hanboks in old palaces and Hanok villages. Type 4 required the development of a design that reflects the elements of the traditional Hanbok and is convenient for activity and laundering.

Effect of Pretreatments on Reducing Surface Cracks of Heat-treated Western Hemlock Roundwoods

  • A large diameter roundwood is an important element of Korean traditional buildings, Hanok, and is hard to be dried without surface cracks. Four different pretreatments, such as pre-cracking, oil heating, kerfing-oil heating and PEG impregnation, were investigated for reducing the surface cracks of large-diameter roundwood specimens during heat treatment. The roundwood specimens of pre-cracking, oil heating and kerfing-oil heating showed surface cracks during pretreatment, but that of PEG impregnation did not. It was confirmed that kerfing reduced the total crack width. Among the four pretreatments and control only the PEG impregnation roundwood specimen had no crack on both outer and inner surfaces after heat treatment. The PEG impregnation specimen shrank only 1.6% in the tangential direction while the pre-cracking did 8.0%.

An Impact on the Hospitality Industry with Rare Resource and Sharing Economy Platform: Case of Airbnb and Kozaza

  • An analysis of Airbnb and Kozaza will show how valuable and rare resource can have an impact on company performances. Airbnb applied the sharing economy platform, and this business model had disrupted the hospitality industry. Thus, this paper will investigate a Korean company called Kozaza which had benchmarked Airbnb. Furthermore, it will apply the theory of VRIO framework, which consists of how valuable, rare, costly to imitate (imitability), and organization (exploited by the organization) to find competitiveness of Kozaza in the hospitality industry. Thus, it will attempt to show that Kozaza's business model of utilizing the unused resource of Hanok (traditional Korean house) and partnerships with Hanokstay, Seoul Metropolitan Government and Soul Tourism Organization and others have enhanced their resource and capability to strengthen their business model. Furthermore, this research will explore how Kozaza can competitively be successful in the future.
