  • The fractal theory is an interesting tool for measuring the soil properties which are irregular and dynamical. A simple example is shown in this paper that (statistical) fractal dimension can be evaluated from the traditional Particle-size distribution(PSD) curve. The results of Wu et al.(1993) and Bittelli el al.(1999) were referred to demonstrate the fractal analysis.

  • A new filter-bank is proposed in order to track center frequency of narrow band signal. The two banks are connected in series-parallel. The master filter bank which is made of traditional filter bank detects the center frequency roughly. And the performance for tracking center frequency is greatly improved by the slave filter bank which is based on energy-difference estimator. Computer simulations show that it achieves a good tracking accuracy.

  • Among the non-traditional machining methods, Abrasive waterjet machining process shows big promise in drilling difficult-to-machine materials due to its numerous advantages such as absence of heat affect zone and thermal distortion. Acoustic emission signal technique is used to understand about material removal mechanisms during abrasive waterjet drilling process. More information about the drilling process is derived through frequency decomposition of auto regressive moving average modeling representing acoustic emission signals.

  • Methods of fuzzy C-means have been used to characterize geotechnical information from static cone penetration data. As contrary with traditional classification methods such as Robertson classification chart, the FCM expresses classes not conclusiveness but fuzzy. The results show that the FCM is useful to characterize ground information that can not be easily found by using normal classification chart. But optimal number of classes may not be easily defined. So, the optimal number of classes should be determined considering not only technical measures but engineering aspects.

  • This study has been done to investigate the characteristics of the wall materials of a earthen house ; the core-wall of a wood-frame house and the mud-wall of a all-wall house. A series of tests is carried out to study the physical properties of wall materials which are picked from existing earthen houses. The core-wall materials are composed of sandy soil or clayey soil with low plasticity. The mud-wall materials are sandy soil with well compaction effect. It is confirmed that the wall materials are common soils which are easily picked from the residential quarter.

  • This paper summarizes the design and construction of the roof canopy structure for the SEOUL 2002 World Cup Main Stadium with a design inspired by Korean traditional beauty emphasizing images of the Pangpae kite. The stadium has also been designed for maximization of its post-World Cup utility to be used on as every basis by the citizens. The stadium canopy is a unique spatial network of truss members with a tensile membrane roof suspended from 16 masts. The canopy covers 40,950 ㎡. which is clad with a pre-stressed tensile membrane of PTFE coated fiberglass fabric and the glass.

  • Hopfield neural network has been applied to the problem of economic load dispatch(ELD) of electric power. The optimum values of neuron potentials are represented in terms of large numbers. The differential synchronous transition mode is used in this simulation. Through case studies, we have shown the possibility of the application of neural network to ELD. In case of including the transmission losses, the proposed method has an advantage that the problem can be solved simply with one neural network, without calculating incremental fuel costs and incremental losses required by traditional method.

  • Medial axis transformation is an important concept used in many engineering applications. We propose a new approach to medial axis transformation of 2D objects with smooth boundary. Our approach differs from the traditional ones: we construct the medial axis starting from the inside points, while the previous algorithms started from the boundary points. As a result, previous algorithms are highly sensitive to the small irregularities of the object's boundary curve, while our approach is robust.

  • Considerable research in the last three decades has examined the problem of enhancement of speech degraded by additive background noise. We compare traditional methods such as spectral subtraction and Wiener filter, recently proposed psychoacoustic model based methods such as perceptual filter and noise suppression in EVRC in terms of performance and complexity.
