  • In response to the need of developing children's wear design using traditional elements, this study purposed to develop fashion designs emphasizing contemporary images based on the symbolism and formativeness of traditional dresses. For this study, we reviewed the definitions and symbolism of traditional colors and traditional patterns using previous research, and classified them according to formative shape. In addition, this study made three pieces of dress and developed unique designs by applying the traditional patterns and elements of Korean traditional dress styles. The research methods were as follows. First, we examined the images of Korean traditional colors and classified the symbols and meanings of the colors. Second, we identified the types of patterns, and classified them into shapes and symbols. Third, we designed and made actual works by applying traditional patterns. Based on the theoretical studies as presented above, we developed contemporary casual hanbok designs for children by applying symbolic and formative traditional patterns and using DTP (digital textile printing).

When colors were combined with four tone(vivid, light, dull and dark), American students evaluated the same colors of red skirt and red jacket, green skirt and green jacket as harmonized coloration. But Korean students thought they were not harmonized. The yellow colors of jacket and the similar colors of red skirt were evaluated as harmonized by both Korean and American students. They evaluated the green jacket and the red skirt of contrast color as harmonized. The different tone of color caused the different evaluation of harmony of colors by both Korean and American students.

  • The purpose of this research is to understand the harmony of chromatic and achromatic colors of the traditional Korean dress. The subjects were women's college students in Korea and America. Chromatic colon, red, yellow, and green color, were chosen for the color of the Korean jacket, and achromatic colors were chosen for the color of the skirt, and then the colors' chroma were controlled and value of color was changed. In addition, the three colors of the jacket were combined with four kinds of the colors' tone. Then, the students of both countries assessed about the harmony for 48 colorations which were variously incorporated with the tones of skirt and jacket. The results of research can be summarized as follows. When red jackets were combined with skirts of achromatic colors, students of both counties showed the different views in the range of harmony and disharmony for colorations of white(N9) skin and vivid jacket, and white(N9) skirt and dark jacket, and black(N2) skirt and light jacket, and black(N2) skirt and dull jacket. In the tone of yellow jackets and achromatic skirts, students of both counties showed similar responses in that a light yellow jacket was well matched with dark grey(N4) and black(N2) skirt. While Korean students generally evaluated that coloration was well harmonized when low value color was arranged below, American students thought, that the tones of a harmonized skirt were different, according to the jacket's tones. When green jackets were combined with stills of achromatic colors, colorations that showed their different views of both countries were a white(N9) skirt combined with vivid, light, dull jackets, and a light grey(N7) skirt and dull jacket, and a dark grey(N4) skirt and dark jacket. Among 48 stimuli of coloration on the chromatic and achromatic colors, Korean students evaluated 16sets and American students judged 28 sets as harmonized colors. Therefore, it came to the conclusion that Korean students had the sense of harmonious coloration of more narrow range than American students.

  • For making something to use as a tool since the emergence of mankind, the initial pragmatic purpose has transformed into a new genre of art over time. Things defined like this have rooted in our culture as tradition so far. In the midst of today's various trends, a reflection of tradition and a modern search for tradition by re-creating it are much more needed. To any people in any time, a new trend would undeniably develop on the basis of its previous tradition in any form. The colors appearing in such artwork are also an expression of each people's unconscious potentiality as essential grounds for human aesthetic. The traditional Korean Bojaki, which was made out of women's pragmatic mind trying to recycle trashy pieces of cloth in the 19th century of Chosun Dynasty, appears as a symbolization of our nation's original form in unconsciousness. It includes Confucianism, Buddhism, Zen and the Yin-Yang and Five Elements thought, which have been together with naturalism. The five colors appearing in the Yin-Yang and Five Elements are the basis. Fourteen selected samples around the five colors seen in the color scheme of the Chosun era's Bojaki were measured and their color values were found by analyzing them based on HCV(Hue, Chroma, Value)of the five primary colors as well as the five secondary colors. After choosing a few colors with bare eyes close to traditional Primary Colors and Secondary Colors amongst 14 pieces of data which particularly used traditional Five Colors and examining them using spectrophotometer(JX777), the following conclusions were drawn. Comparing only colors in Primary Colors, the result was red 7.11R 4.59/10.69, blue 6.71PB 3.18/6.45, yellow 3.91Y 7.56/6.12, respectively. With regard to Secondary Colors, it was reported that red 7.96RP 5.42/10.3, blue 7.8B 5.16/5.53, green 8.03GY 6.05/4.34, yellow 2.73Y 7.47/4.07, purple 2.39RP 4.69/4.56, respectively. (diagram) As a result, the standard of Five Colors can be used in modern fiber color. There are differences in dyeing material, methods and kinds of fiber of that time, but women of Chosun Dynasty combined and made fabric which was circulated. Consequently, an applicable attribute of the aye-color values was considered.

  • Colors that stimulate human emotions in everyday life are one of the important factors in animation production. The research on color has been actively carried out in relation to the importance and nature mainly for animation production. However, researches that investigated different views for specific color by geographic characteristics are rare. Therefore, information was collected through questionnaire survey and empirical analysis was conducted using SPSS statistical package to analyze preference of Korean and Chinese people for the Chinese traditional colors. The analysis results showed that both Korean and Chinese groups preferred red color among Chinese traditional colors. This preference for red was statistically significant in both groups, indicating that the intensity of preference for red was different even though Korean and Chinese equally preferred red. Furthermore, among 10 red colors, the preferred red was different between Chinese and Korean. Based on these results, it is suggested that the color should be selected considering the characteristics of the intended market for Chinese animation production and the personality of the viewers who watch the animation products.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyse the previous color studies. A number of publications and journals were reviewed and analyzed carefully. The results of review and analysis were as follows : There were many different subjects in color studies and they were usually categorized into ten fundamental groups : color preferences, color image/symbol/association of ideas, emotion and colors, image making with colors, colors related with consumers' decision making, traditional colors, semantic color description, color plan of apparel merchandise, influential factors on colors, and color coordination preferences. In general, the color preference studies are conducted most actively, and they are followed by the studies of color image/symbol/association of ideas and traditional colors. In the previous studies on the color preferences, they provided sufficient amount of information on the preferred colors and the preferred apparel colors. however, they lacked in providing appropriate explanation on how these color preferences were related with colors in fashion. Also, there have been no thorough studies that questioned the reliability of measurement methods for obtaining color preference data. The authors also realized that it was extremely difficult to find any related publications on the studies that focus various influential variables on the disagreement between the preferred color and preferred apparel color. Thus, this study directed the future studies to solve the problem discussed above.
