  • The need for highly reliable methods for the determination of trace metals is recognized in analytical chemistry and environmental science. A method based on the cloud-point extraction (CPE) technique for the trace analysis of Pb and Cu in water samples is described in this study. The analytes in the initial aqueous solution are complexed with pyrogallol, and 0.1%(w/v) Triton X-114 is added as surfactant. Following phase separation at $50^{\circ}C$, based on the cloud point of the mixture and dilution of the surfactant-rich phase with acidified methanolic solution, the enriched analytes are determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. After optimization of the complexation and extraction conditions, the enrichment factors of Pb and Cu were found to be 72 and 85, respectively. Under optimum conditions, the preconcentration of 60 mL of samples in the presence of 0.1%(w/v) Triton X-114 permitted the detection of 0.4 ${\mu}gL^{?1}$ of Pb and 0.05 ${\mu}gL^{?1}$ of Cu. The proposed method was applied successfully to the determination of Pb and Cu in water samples.

  • The trace polymer and additives in used stripper solutions were analyzed by a combination of Py-GC/MS and ESI-MS. In the comparison of the pyrolysates produced by the pyrolysis of the pure stripper and photoresist at $500{^{\circ}C}$, the presence of novolac polymer in the used stripper was confirmed by the presence of the characteristic peaks of its pyrolysates, such as those of the methylphenol, di-methylphenol and methylenebis(methylphenol) isomers. The intact trace polymer was measured by ESI-MS, which showed the distribution of oligomers at intervals of 120 Da, indicating di-methylphenol to be the repeat unit. Additional MS/MS measurements demonstrated that the end group is methylphenol and the repeat groups are di-methylphenol. Some modified oligomers caused by the methylation or di-methylation of the repeat unit were also identified. Although the polymer is only present at a trace level in the used stripper, these combined analytical methods provided the means to qualify the stripper solution through the identification and structural determination of the polymer.

  • A number of closed metal mines act as point sources of contamination on nearby streams, soils and plants in our country. The contamination of twelve decomposed samples had earned from nine closed metal mines had been evaluated by TEA-3000. The contents of heavy metal with ion fraction exchange and carbonate fraction forms had been showed that the speciation of heavy metals represented with easy solubility, mobility and bioavailable of plants, and in case of sulfide compounds and organic residuals forms are related with the speciation of metals which may be stable forms because of strong bindable capacity. Also heavy metals elements in mosts of mines got with relative stable within crystal lattice, but results of trace element analyser showed that, in the most of tailings from mine areas, large portions of concentration of heavy metals were explained as stable from, sulfides/ organics and residual. In tailing from Imchun mines, the concentrations extracted by water were relatively high as compared with other mine areas whose total concentrations were very high because of large quantities of exchangeable ions and carbonates and low soil pH. Danger Index (D.I.) suggested in this study was based on the cumulative concentrations of step 1 and 2 from the result of trace element analyser. When the soil pH was considered, this index became better indicator to determine the priority for the remediation of mine area.

  • Collision cell technology-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (CCT-ICP-MS) was used to measure the concentrations of approximately 19 elements associated with airborne PM2.5 samples that were collected from a roadside sampling station in Daejeon, Korea. Standard reference material (SRM 2783, air particulate on filter media) of the National Institute of Standards and Technology was used for the quality assurance of CCT-ICP-MS. The elemental concentrations were compared statistically with the certified (or recommended) values. The patterns of distribution were clearly distinguished between elements with their concentrations ranging over four orders of magnitude. If compared in terms of enrichment factors, it was found that toxic trace elements (e.g., Sb, Se, Cd, As, Zn, Pb, and Cu) of anthropogenic origin are much more enriched in PM2.5 samples of the study site. To the contrary, the results of the correlation analysis showed that PM2.5 concentrations can exhibit more enhanced correlations with the elements (e.g., Fe, K, Si, and Ti) arising from earth's crust. The findings of strong correlations between PM2.5 and the elements of crustal origin may be directly comparable with the dominant role of those species by constituting a major fraction of even PM2.5 as well as PM10 at the roadside area.

  • The preconcentration and determination of trace elements in water samples were studied by a solvent sublation utilizing dithizonate complexation. After metal dithizonates were formed, trace amounts of cadmium, cobalt, copper and lead were floated and extracted into small volume of a water-immiscible organic solvent on the surface of sample solution and determined in the solvent directly by GF-AAS. Several experimental conditions as formation condition of metal-dithizonate complexes, pH of solution, amount of dithizone, stirring time, the type and amount of surfactants, N2 bubbling rate and so on were optimized for the complete formation and effective flotation of the complexes. And also four kinds of light solvents were compared each other to extract the floated complexes, effectively. After the pH was adjusted to 4.0 with 5 M HNO3, 8.0 mL of 0.05% acetone solution of dithizone was added to 1.00 L water sample. The dithizonate complexes were flotated and extracted into the upper methyl isobutylketone (MIBK) layer by the addition of 2.0 mL 0.2% ethanolic sodium lauryl sulfate solution and with the aid of small nitrogen gas bubbles. And this solvent sublation method was applied to the analysis of real water samples and good results of more than 85% recoveries were obtained in spiked samples.

  • Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) of quartz is commonly applied to the age dating of Quaternary sediments. However, one of the issues is that some of the quartz samples are not suitable to OSL dating. Mineralogical analysis of the quartz samples with diverse OSL signals are required to strengthen the reliability and applicability of the OSL dating. We analysed the OSL signal characteristics of sedimentary quartz samples from diverse geological environments and measured their trace element contents using laser-ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). Quartz samples could be grouped into ones suitable to OSL dating and ones unsuitable on the basis of their OSL signal characteristics. The average trace element contents ranged from 73 to 260 ppm (Al), and from 61 to 248 ppm (Ti) with minor Li, Mg, Cr, Mn, and Fe contents below 40 ppm. We did not find any significant variation of trace element contents of quartz samples consistent with their OSL signal characteristics. This indicates unknown mineralogical factors causing diverse OSL characteristics which should be confirmed by further analysis of sufficient set of samples.

  • Suitable analytical procedures for the bulk analysis of ultra-trace amounts of uranium and plutonium have been developed using multi-collector inductively coupled mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS). The quantification and determination of the isotopic ratios of uranium and plutonium in three simulated swipe samples, a swipe blank, and a process blank were performed to validate the analytical performance. The analytical results for the simulated swipe samples were in good agreement with the certified values, based on the measurement quality goals for the analysis of bulk environmental samples recommended by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)

  • Binary scalar multiplication which is the main operation of elliptic curve cryptography is vulnerable to the side-channel analysis. Especially, it is vulnerable to the side-channel analysis which uses power consumption and electromagnetic emission patterns. Thus, various countermeasures have been studied. However, they have focused on eliminating patterns of data dependent branches, statistical characteristic according to intermediate values, or the interrelationships between data. No countermeasure have been taken into account for the secure design of the key bit check phase, although the secret scalar bits are directly loaded during that phase. Therefore, in this paper, we demonstrate that we can extract secret scalar bits with 100% success rate using a single power or a single electromagnetic trace by performing key bit-dependent attack on hardware implementation of binary scalar multiplication algorithm. Experiments are focused on the $Montgomery-L{\acute{o}}pez-Dahab$ ladder algorithm protected by scalar randomization. Our attack does not require sophisticated pre-processing and can defeat existing countermeasures using a single-trace. As a result, we propose a countermeasure and suggest that it should be applied.
