Multiple Effects of Bracken Fern under in vivo and in vitro Conditions

  • Several toxic substances have been detected in plants which are responsible for animal and human diseases. Bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum) is one example, widely distributed in many parts of the world. It is known to cause cancer in humans and other animals. In fact, man can be directly or indirectly exposed to the danger by consuming fern, contaminated water, milk, meat, and spore inhalation. Experimental studies have shown an association between bracken exposure and gastric cancer, and research has shown genotoxic and cytotoxic effects in vitro. This paper describes and reviews toxic, carcinogenic, genotoxic/cytotoxic, and immunomodulatory effects of bracken and included possible toxic agents. The chemistry of Ptaquiloside (PT) reactions is emphasized, along with bracken problems in livestock, possible pathways of exposure in man, and control for human health.

  • Allylthio group of the sulfur compounds of garlic oil plays an important role for prevention and treatment of hepatic diseases induced by toxic substances or carbon tetrachloride. Thus allylthio group as pharmacologically active group was introduced into pyridazine heterocycle ring. Aryloxyallylthiopyridazine derivatives were synthesized and their hepatoprotective activities were screened in rat. The activities of these compounds were weaker than alkoxyallylthiopyridazine derivatives, which exhibit a superior hepatoprotective effect.

잣나무 天然化學物質이 Callus 誘起 및 細菌培養에 미치는 影響 (Effects of naturally Occurring KDICicals from Pinus koraiensis on Callus Induction and Germiculture)

  • To study allelopathic porential of naturally occurring substances emitted from Pinus koraiensis, the effects of water exrracts and volatile substances of the tree on callus induction and bacterial culture were examined. The induction and growth of callus were inversely proportional to the concentration of the extracts and of the essential oils supplemnted to Murashige and Skoog's media. However, low concentration(5μl/l) of essential oil promoted callus growth. In germiculture of several bavteria, the extracts of Pinus koraiensis markedly showed the inhibitory effects on bacterial growth. It was, therefore, confirmed that the KDICical substances of Pinus koraiensis tree clearly showed that biological toxic activity at high concentrations.

조류를 이용한 시화호 및 시화호 유입수 내 중금속 물질의 독성 평가 연구 (Toxicity Assessment of Heavy Metals in Shihwa Lake and Its Tributaries using the Algae)

  • This research investigates how using algae as an ecotoxicological test species is easier than using daphnia for identifying toxic causative substances. From the results of the ecotoxicity measurements on the Shihwa lake and its tributaries, heavy metals were considered as one of major factors in causing toxicity. The algae ecotoxicity value was 9.6 while the daphnia ecotoxicity value was 0.8 in the Jeongwang stream. By using algae as the test species, we could identify the toxicity that causes heavy metals which might otherwise have been missed with only daphnia. The results from the EDTA addition test showed that zinc and copper were the main toxic causative substances in the Jeongwang stream and Gunja stream.

  • Because buildings recently built have been highly insulated and highly airtight, it is impossible to emit toxic substances from interior finishing materials only by natural ventilation. Therefore, they cause indoor air pollution and it may threaten the user"s health such as atopic dermatitis, bronchial asthma and (allergic) rhinitis. Domestically, users spend indoors 80 percent of their time of a day. With the increased interest in indoor air quality, the introduction of forced ventilation system for new-built apartment buildings has been legislated. However, toxic substances from indoor are mostly below there commended standard approximately 23 months later. Thus, this study has assumed the status of the apartment buildings 23 months later through a simulation, regarded $CO_2$ as an exclusive indoor air pollution source. In the process of effectively eliminating the $CO_2$, this study has also been conducted on an operating plan that can provide superior performance from the energy side.

Selenite Stress Elicits Physiological Adaptations in Bacillus sp. (Strain JS-2)

  • A bacterial isolate (strain JS-2) characterized as Bacillus sp. was challenged with high concentrations of toxic selenite ions. The microbe was found to transform the toxic, soluble, colorless selenite (${SeO_3}^{2-}$) oxyions to nontoxic, insoluble, red elemental selenium ($Se^0$). This process of biotransformation was accompanied by cytoplasmic and surface accumulation of electron dense selenium ($Se^0$) granules, as revealed in electron micrographs. The cells grown in the presence of selenite oxyions secreted large quantities of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). There were quantitative and qualitative differences in the cell wall fatty acids of the culture grown in the presence of selenite ions. The relative percentage of total saturated fatty acid and cyclic fatty acid increased significantly, whereas the amount of total unsaturated fatty acids decreased when the cells were exposed to selenite stress. All these physiological adaptive responses evidently indicate a potentially important role of cell wall fatty acids and extracellular polymeric substances in determining bacterial adaptation towards selenite-induced toxicity, which thereby explains the remarkable competitiveness and ability of this microbe to survive the environmental stress.

사고대비물질 누출 시 독성피해 영향범위 상관관계식 개발에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Simulation of Damage Distance for Toxic Substances Leakage)

  • 본 논문은 2015년 화학물질관리법 시행에 따라 일정 수량 이상 화학물질을 취급함으로써 장외영향평가서와 위해관리계획서를 제출할 의무가 있는 영세 및 중소기업들을 대상으로 행정 경제적인 부담을 줄이고자 위험성 평가에 대한 실질적인 피해 영향범위를 판단한 것이다. 사고대비물질 중 액체상 물질인 질산, 메탄올, 아세트산에 대하여 독성 누출 시 피해 영향범위를 산정하였고, 저장 및 누출량에 따른 독성피해 영향범위를 판단할 수 있는 상관관계식을 도출하였다. 본 연구의 상관관계식으로 산정된 독성 누출시 피해 영향범위 결과와 실제 사업장의 사고 시나리오에 따른 KORA(장외영향평가서, 위해관리계획서 작성 지원 범용프로그램) 결과를 비교하여 적용 및 검증을 실시하였다. 따라서 본 연구의 물질별 상관관계식은 도로 혹은 사업장에서 사고대비물질 누출사고가 발생했을 경우, 독성피해 영향범위를 빠르게 판단함으로써 비상조치계획의 수립과 비상상황에 신속하게 대응할 수 있을 것이다. 또한, 영세 및 중소기업 사업장은 화학물질관리법에 따른 장외영향평가와 위해관리계획서를 제출할 때 위험성평가 활용이 가능하며, 저장 및 누출량에 따라 예상되는 독성피해 영향범위를 간단하게 확인 및 평가할 수 있을 것이다.

고도산화와 정밀여과의 혼성공법을 이용한 유기화학물질의 분해 및 제거분석에 관한 연구 - 먹는 물을 중심으로 - (A Study on Dissolve and Remove Analysis of Organic Chemicals Using a Mixed Method of Advanced Oxidation and Micro Filtering - Water Drinking Point -)

  • 먹는 물 내에 존재하는 발암원인으로 의심되는 유기화학물질을 재래식 정수처리방법으로 제거한다는 것은 불가능하다. 이들을 AOP산화 & M/F membrane 혼성공정법을 이용하여 목적하는 처리수로 처리하고자 지하수를 반응조에 유효용량으로 유입하고 유기화학물질을 인위적으로 투입 혼합하여 충분히 희석시키고 이것을 효율적으로 처리하기 위해 최적운전조건을 도출하였다. 유기 화학물질 중 VOCs는 페놀과 톨루엔을 그리고 농약은 파라치온, 다이아지논과 카바닐을 대상으로 조사하였다. 실험은 각각 분류별 단일용액과 혼합용액으로 수행하였으며, 실험결과 충분한 분해 및 제거를 위한 운전조건은 $H_2O_2$는 150 mL로 정량 주입하고, pH는 $5.5{\sim}6.0$, 온도는 $12{\sim}16^{\circ}C$로 일정하게 유지하고, 용존오존량은 5.0 mg/L이상, 반응시간은 $30{\sim}40$분이 최적 조건이었으며 그리고 같은 반응기 내 분리막의 사용은 $0.45{\mu}m$ 공경크기의 M/F membrane을 이용하여 대량의 음용수를 얻기 위한 결정이었다.

영월지역 토양중 PFA로부터 기인된 잠재적 독성원소의 분포 (The Distribution of Potentially Toxic Elements in Soils Derived from PFA near Youngwol Power Plant)

  • Fly ashes have been deposited around Youngwol power plant until electrostatic precipitator was installed in 1981. Fresh fly ash samples from electrostatic precipitator and weathered fly ash from ash disposal site were collected from Youngwol power plant, along with 65 soil samples of nearby area to look into the influence of PFA deposit on the soils in surrounding area. In chemistry, EPA does not contain high level of toxic elements and there is no notable concentration of toxic elements in soil near power plant. Total concentrations of Co, Cr, Cu, V, and Zn are 13 ppm, 89 ppm, 73 ppm, 157 ppm and 57 ppm in PFA. Concentrations of theses elements in ash-rich soils are 15 ppm, 78 ppm, 60 ppm, 133 ppm and 68 ppm, and those in ash-poor soils are 19 ppm, 70 ppm, 38 ppm, 91 ppm and 97 ppm. But these metal elements are highly concentrated in magnetic fractions of EPA (Co, 129 ppm; Cr, 217 ppm; Cu, 210 ppm; V, 197 ppm; Zn 90 ppm). Considering the process of long-term weathering of PFA, potentially toxic substances from the ash could be leached into soils and groundwater.
