Three twisted rudders fit for large container ships have been developed; 1) the Z-twisted rudder that is an asymmetry type taking into consideration incoming flow angles of the propeller slipstream, 2) the ZB-twisted rudder with a rudder bulb added onto the Z-twisted rudder, and 3) the ZB-F twisted rudder with a rudder fin attached to the ZB-twisted rudder. The twisted rudders have been designed computationally with the hydrodynamic characteristics in a self-propulsion condition in mind. The governing equation is the Navier-Stokes equations in an unsteady turbulent flow. The turbulence model applied is the Reynolds stress. The calculation was carried out in towing and self-propulsion conditions. The sliding mesh technique was employed to simulate the flow around the propeller. The speed performances of the ship with the twisted rudders were verified through model tests in a towing tank. The twisted versions showed greater performance driven by increased hull efficiency from less thrust deduction fraction and more effective wake fraction and decreased propeller rotating speed.

The running attitude of a high-speed planing craft may change significantly depending on its speed in seaway. Other variables that may influence its running attitude are its weight, center of gravity, sea conditions, and so on. In this paper, planing craft model tests were carried out with respect to above variables in SNU towing tank, and vertical motion responses of a planing craft in regular head waves were analyzed. The experimental results in regular waves were compared with those in calm water, and compared with the theoretical estimations. Finally, the effects of running speeds of a planing craft on its motion amplitudes are confirmed.

Currently, shipping by sea is becoming common because of the low price and the safety of goods. The ship is designed as a larger vessel to meet the need of this development. In the design stage, the investigation of hydrodynamic forces acting on the ship hull is very important in predicting the ship's maneuverability. Given that the ship docks at various ports for loading or discharging goods, the ship usually operates in various loading conditions, depending on the site condition and other various factors. Hence, it is necessary to investigate the effect of the loading condition on the hydrodynamic forces acting on the ship, to most accurately determine the maneuverability of the ship. In this study, an experiment of Korea Autonomous Surface Ship (KASS) was conducted at the towing tank of Changwon National University to measure the hydrodynamic forces acting on the KASS. The loading condition considered in this experiment is determined based on the draft, which was decreased by 5% for each loading condition. The smallest draft is 85% of the design draft. The static test as Oblique Towing Test (OTT), Circular Motion Test (CMT), Circular Motion Test with Drift (CMTD) is performed in the various loading conditions. First, the hydrodynamic forces in the Oblique Towing test (OTT) are compared with the result of other institutes. Second, the hydrodynamic forces in various drift angle, yaw rate and loading conditions are measured. Finally, the influence of the loading conditions on the hydrodynamic coefficient is discussed.

In order to build a ship, painting on ship cargo tank is one of the most dangerous parts as it involves working in high altitudes and a closed ship cargo tank. Therefore, researchers have been developing devices that will enable mobile robots to operate on vertical walls. The wall-climbing robots have been widely used to attach on the wall such as suction types. These types can be utilized regardless of the wall material. However, it is required to adhere and control the suction cups. To moderate this drawbacks, this paper proposes an automatic painting robot that uses a permanent magnet mobile robot. Using the magnetic characteristics, this robot can move on the boat vertically and horizontally even while hanging on the ceiling of the ship cargo tank. Also, we made a prototype to test adhesive force of the permanent magnet wheel and mobile robot as well as the towing capacity and auto-piloting ability.

H. Kim, B.K. Lee and C.K. Rheem have been experimentally studied to clarified the mechanism of thrust force generated by sculling motion for the propulsion of Korean small boats. The experimental investigations have been conducted under the bollard condition by installing a scull at the end of a trimming tank of towing tank. The sculling motion produced by the skilful fisherman and the resultant venerated forces have been measured in respect to the Cartesian coordinate fitted to the pivot point of the scull. ("An Experimental Study on the Propulsive Characteristics of Sculls". J. of the Soc. of Naval Arch. of Korea, Vol. 26, No. 3, 1989, pp.13-24) Through these experiments the trajectory of the blade tip and the angular displacement of the blade section have been measured as shown in Fig. 1 and 2 of this paper. And at the same time the resultant hydrodynamic force components are expressed in Fig. 3 and 4. These three dimensional data of sculling motion and generated real time force components are the unique experimental information which could clarify the thrust force generating mechanism of sculling motion. The experimental results have been reanalyzed by focusing the relation between instantaneous attack angle of blade section and the resultants real time force components. Through these investigation it is found out that the conventional imagination that the 7cull motion should be effective in generating lift force must be reconsidered because the attack angle of scull blade are too great to free from stall phenomena during the sculling operation.

Some research work on CFD computation of ship motions and added resistance in waves for a high speed trimaran is carried out in this paper. The governing equations, Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes and continuity equations are discretized by finite volume method. Volume of fluid method is adopted to deal with the nonlinear free surface. The incident waves are generated from the inflow boundary by prescribing a velocity profile resembling flexible flap wavemaker motions, and the outgoing waves are dissipated inside an artificial damping zone located at the rear part of the wave tank. In this paper, the computed results of ship motion and added resistance for a high speed trimaran are presented. The results of seakeeping experiment for the high speed trimaran carried out in CSSRC towing tank are also presented in this paper. Rather good agreements are shown between the computational and experimental results. The work in this paper provides a numerical tool for the study of seakeeping performance of high speed trimarans.
Turbulent flow calculations are performed for the two modern practical VLCCs with the sable forebody and the slightly different afterbody, i.e. KVLCC and KVLCC2. Three $\textsc{k}-\varepsilon$ turbulence models are tested to investigate the differences caused by the turbulence models. The calculated results around the two VLCC hull forms using O-O grid topology and profile-fitted surface meshes are compared to the measured data from towing tank experiment. The realizable $\textsc{k}-\varepsilon$model provided realistic wake distribution with hook-like shape, while the standard and RNG-based $\textsc{k}-\varepsilon$models failed. It is very encouraging to see that the CFD with relatively simple turbulence closure can tell the difference quantitatively as well as qualitatively for the two hull forms with stern frameline modification.
Since the towing tank was operated from early 1979, the test and analysis methods have been established and applied for the performance prediction of ships. Especially the analysis programs for the resistance test ('EHP') and self-propulsion test ('DHP') based on the 1978 ITTC performance prediction method was modified as a name of 'PPTT' in order to include the form factor calculation, two-dimensional analysis method, the prediction on multi-screw ship and the organization of data filing system. Recently the program 'PPTT' was improved to cover the procedure of data fairing, the analysis of propeller-open-water test results carried out at low and high Reynolds numbers, etc. This paper describes the newly improved analysis program 'PTI'.
