  • The influence of different appendage shape on the characteristics of hydrodynamic forces on Manta-type Unmanned Undersea Test Vehicle(MUUTV) was discussed experimentally. Fuselage only MUUTV model and two types of MUUTV model with different appendage geometries were considered as the subject of discussion Oblique tow experiment was carried out in circulating water channel with three MUUTV models. A point of difference in hydrodynamic force characteristics among three models was indicated. Furthermore, the linear hydrodynamic derivatives obtained from model experiment were compared with theoretical calculation results from slender body theory, added mass theory and etc. Based on the hydrodynamic force characteristics, motion stability of two types of MUUTV model with different appendage geometries was compared each other. Through the above analysis, the more suitable shape of appendage geometry was made clear.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of Pb-Free Sn-2%Ag-Bi solder alloys. The solder alloys used in this study is Sn-2%Ag-(3,5,7,9%) Bi It is examined that their properties such as melting range, wettability, microstructure, microhardness, and tensile property. The addition of Bi(3,5,7,9%) lowered the melting point of the solder and the melting range was 196~203$^{\circ}C$. The wettability of the solder as equal to that of Sn-37% Pb solder. The morphology of structure did not change largely by addition of Bi. But the structure of cellular dendrite of linear type displayed. The tensile strength of the solder was superior to that of Sn-37%Pb solder. But the elongation was inferior to that of Sn-37%Pb solder. The hardness of Sn-2%Ag solder was tow times and that of Sn-2%Ag-Bi solder was three times of that in Sn-37%Pb solder. But the effect of increment of Bi content did not change largely.

  • Flame structure and extinction mechanism of counterflow methane/air non-premixed flame diluted with nitrogen are studied by NASA 2.2 s drop tower experiments and two-dimensional numerical simulations with finite rate chemistry and transport properties. Extinction mechanism at low strain rate is examined through the comparison among results of microgravity experiment, 1D and 2D simulations with a finite burner diameter. A two-dimensional simulation in counterflow flame especially with a finite burner diameter is shown to be very important in explaining the importance of multidimensional effects and lateral heat loss in flame extinction, effects that cannot be understood using a one-dimensional flamelet model. Extinction mechanism at low strain rate is quite different from that at high strain rate. Low strain rate flame is extinguished initially at the outer flame edge, the flame shrinks inward, and finally is extinguished at the center. It is clarified from the overall fractional contribution by each term in energy equation to heat release rate that the contribution of radiation fraction with 1D and 2D simulations does not change so much and the overall fractional contribution is decisively attributed to radial conduction ('lateral heat loss'). The experiments by Maruta et at. can be only completely understood if multi-dimensional heat loss effects are considered. It is, as a result, verified that the turning point, which is caused only by pure radiation heat loss, has to be shifted towards much lower global strain rate in microgravity flame.

  • The technique of fretting fatigue test was developed and fretting fatigue tests of A12024-T4 were conducted under several conditions. The newly developed calibration methods for measuring surface contact tractions showed good linearity and repeatability. The plate type specimen to which tow bridge type pads were attached and vision system was used to observe the crack behaviour. The oblieque cracks appeared in the early stage of crack growth and they became mode I cracks as they grow about 1 mm. The mode I transition points were found to be longer when surface tractions are higher or bulk stress is lower. Before the crack becomes mode I crack, 'well point' where crack grow about rate is minimum, was detected under every experimental condition. The crack behaviour was found to be affected by surface tractions, contact area, bulk stress. It was also found that partial slip and stick condition is most detrimental and the crack starts from the boundary of stick and slip. For gross slip crack started at the outside edge of pad. After crack mode transition, fretting fatigue cracks showed almost same behaviour of plain mode I fatigue cracks. Equivalent stress intensity factor was used to analyze the behaviour of fretting fatigue cracks and it was found that stress intensity factors can be applied to fretting fatigue cracks.

  • A numerical simulation of the steady and pulsatile flow across the end-to-side anastomosis was performed In order to understand the role of flow dynamics in the preferential bevel opment of distal anastomotic intimal hyperplasla. The finite element technique was employed to solve two-dimensional unsteady pulsatile flow in that region. The results of the steady flow revealed that low shear stresses occur at the proximally occluded host artery and at the recirculation region in the Inner wall just distal to the toe region of the anastomosis. The nor- mal;zed wall shear rate was increased, as was the recirculation zone size in the host artery of the by-pass graft anastomosis, with increased anastomotic junction angle. In order to min imize the size of the low wall shear region which might result in the intimal hyperplasia in the by-pass graft anastomosis, a smaller anastomotic junction angle is recommended. The pulsatile flow simulation revealed flow that regions of low and ascillating mali shear do exist near the anastomosis as In the steady simulation. The shift of stagnation point depends on the pulsation of the flow. As the flow was accelerated at systole, the stagnation point moved downstream, disappered at early diastole and reappeared during late diastole. Low shear stress was also found along both walls of the occluded proximal artery. However, the diastolic flow behavior is quite different from the steady results. The vortex near the occluded artery moved downstream and inwardly during late systole, and disappeared during diastole. Recirculations proximal to the toe and heel regions were significant during diastole. Shear stress oscillation was found along the opposite wall. The results of the present study revealed that tow shear occurs at the proximally occluded host artery aud the recirculation region in the inner wall Just dlstal to the toe region of the anastomosis. The present study suggested that the regions of fluctuated wall shear stress wit flow separation is correlated with the preferential developing regions of anastomosis neointial fibrous hyperplasia.

  • This study was carried out from June, 20, to October 22, 1988, for the purpose of researching on the complaint ratio of Respiratory symptoms of the dental laboratory technicians in Seoul. In this study, aiming to find out complaint ratio of respiratory symptoms of the dental laboratory, SNU-81-AL were applied, at random, to 193 dental laboratory technicians at 39 dental laboratories, as the research group, and to 178 clinical laboratory technicians at 10 general hospitals, as the control group, and above two groups were compared with each other. The following results were obtained from this research. 1. The quantity of respirable dust under 5$\mu$m measured at the dental laborartories was, on an average as well, 5$mg/m^3$-minimum 1.56$mg/m^3$), and the density of CO was, on an average as well, 5.0ppm(Mx 7.0-Mn 3.0). 2. The complaint ratio of five main respiratory symptoms(cough, phlegm, wheezing, nasal catarrh & cold, breathlessness) was, on an average, 44.3% at the dental laboratory technicians, phlegm was the major symptom complained by the greatest number of the technicians. 22.4% of the clinical laboratory technicians complained above 5 main respiratory symptoms, nassal catarrh & cold was the mostly complained symptoms among them. There showed a consideraly significant difference at the complaint ratio between the above 2 occupations(P<0.005). 3. There showed no paticular significant difference between male and female, at the complaint ratio of the dental laboratory technicians. However, there showed a considerable significant difference according to their sexuality, in case of the clinical laboratory technicians. 4. Considered from th view point of age, the highest age group was 20-29 with its average 48.5%, in case of dental laboratory technicians. The highest age group among the clinical laboratory technicians was over 40 age with its 28.7%. There showed no particular significant differences between to tow occupations. 5. Considered from the view point of work period, the highest work period group was 0-3 years with average 47.8%, in case of dental laboratory The highest work period group among the clinical laboratory technicians was 16 years with its 25.2%. There showed no particuar significant differences between the two occupations. 6. Considered from the view point of smoking, phlegm was complained by much more smokers than non-smokers, in both occupations. In case of non-smokers, many complained about nassal catarrh & cold. There showed no particular significant differences between the smokers and the non-smokers.

  • In the case of relatively good ground and construction condition in the deep excavation for the construction of subway, railway, building etc., flexible earth retaining systems are often used in an economical point of view. It is generally known that the mechanism of behavior in the flexible earth retaining system is relatively more complicated than the rigid earth retaining system. Moreover in the case of long span strut supporting system the analysis of strut axial force change becomes more difficult when the differences of ground condition and excavation work progress on both sides of excavation section are added. When deeper excavation than the specification or installation delay of supporting system is done or change of ground condition is faced due to the construction conditions during construction process, lots of axial force can be induced in some struts and that can threaten the safety of construction. This paper introduces two examples of long span deep excavation where struts and rock bolts were used as a supporting system with flexible wall structure. And the sections of two examples are 50 meters apart in one construction site, they have almost similar design and construction conditions. The characteristics of ground deformation and strut axial force change were analysed, the similarity and difference between measurement results of tow examples were compared and investigated. The effort of this article aims to improve and develop the technique of design and construction in the coming projects having similar ground condition and supporting method.

  • Ixodes signatus nymphs were subjected to the scanning electron microscopy for the observation of the major physiological sense organs including the Hailer's organ. Finger prints and variable sensory setae were found on the body surface, and especially well developed setae were identified on the article IV and on the anal lobes. A central button-like organelle and numerous small holes were found in the spiracular plate. The Haller's organ was identified at the distal point of the tarsus I and regarded as the major sensory organ, chemoreceptor. Tow types of sensory setae were observed, the shorter ones in front of the organ and the longer ones in distal front as well as near behind of the organ. The fully opened organ was ellipsoidal and a total of seven basiconic sensory pegs rooted deeply and shaped as well arranged hook-like was found inside the organ.

  • In this study nonlinear dynamic behaviors of towed tow-tension cables are numerically analysed. In the case of a taut cable analysis, a bending stiffness term is usually neglected due to its minor effect but it plays an important role in a low-tension cable analysis. A low-tension cable may experience large displacements due to relatively small restoring forces and thus the effects of fluid and geometric non-linearities become predominant. The bending stiffness and non-linearity effects are considered in this work. In order to obtain dynamic behaviors of a towed low-tension cable, three-dimensional nonlinear dynamic equation is described and discretized by employing a finite difference method. An implicit method and Newton-Raphson iteration are adopted for the time integration and nonlinear solutions. For the calculation of huge size of matrices. block tri-diagonal matrix method is applied, which is much faster than the well-known Gauss-Jordan method in two point boundary value problems. Some case studies are carried out and the results of numerical simulations are compared with those of a in-house program of WHOI Cable with good agreements.
