Government Support and Marketing for Medical Tourism: Brand Marketing Strategy utilizing Service Mix (외국인 환자 유치를 위한 지원 및 마케팅 방안: 서비스믹스를 활용한 브랜드 마케팅)

  • Medical tourism in Korea has been rapidly grown for last couple of years, based on exclusive support from Korean government. About 60,000 foreign patients received medial services in 2009, an initial stage of entering medical tourism business, and the number of foreign patients received medical services in Korea hiked to more than 266 thousands in 2014, which is showing 34.7% of annual average increase between 2009 and 2014. Diversification of target markets and service areas contributed on this remarkable growth. This paper describes current status of medical tourism in Korea as well as various supports from government for the growth of medical tourism. In addition, the paper presents approaches for brand marketing, by utilizing 7Ps, the marketing mix (a.k.a. service mix), in order to increase awareness and competitiveness of medical services of Korea in global market.

eSports Fan Identity Consumer and Live Game Watching Behavior: Professional Player Fan Identity Perspective

  • This study investigated whether the Point of attachment (POA) theory can be used to measure the consumption intention on go and watch offline eSports games. The admiration for players, social interaction, and on-site consumption requirements for viewing offline eSports competitions are prioritized. In addition, eSports fans in various regions may have distinct consumption concepts and consumption patterns. Thus, this study surveyed China (n = 156) and South Korea (n = 127) eSports fans who subjectively perceive themselves to be fans of eSports player(s) and who have observed at least one offline eSports game. The results demonstrate that player attraction and socialization have positive and significant effects on offline consumption factors. There is no correlation between previous consumption behavior and satisfaction, but dining shows a significant positive effect on satisfaction. Moreover, there is a strong relationship between satisfaction and future attendance intention. In addition, effect of eSports fan attachment on future visit intentions are measured and there is no correlation between the two variables. The front end of the path in the new model's varied between Chinese and Korean supporters. Finally, theoretical and practical implications of this study are discussed.

Measuring the Economic Value of Smart Tourism Content Using Contingent Valuation Method: Focus on Augmented Reality (가상가치평가법을 적용한 스마트관광 콘텐츠의 경제적 가치 평가: 증강현실을 중심으로)

  • In an ever-changing tourism environment, we need to think about how to successfully attract tourists and provide them with memorable experiences. Smart tourism content is considered as a useful tourism resource for converting into an attractive tourist destination by providing new values in various tourist destinations as well as the changed tourism patterns due to COVID-19. However, there are still few successful cases of smart tourism contents that have secured economic sustainability. Accordingly, this study applied the Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) to estimate the economic value perceived by tourists for smart tourism contents based on augmented reality to develop a smart tourism content development plan that can secure economic sustainability. As a results, it was confirmed that the lower the offered amount, the higher the awareness of the new value, the higher the likelihood of willingness to pay. Based on these research results, this study presented academic and practical implications for the development of smart tourism content that secured economic sustainability.

Influencing Factors to Preference of Medical Tourism Products of Japanese Tourists (일본인 관광객의 의료관광상품 선호도 영향요인 분석)

  • Objectives : This study was supposed to investigate factors which influence to preference of medical tourism products of Japanese tourists in Seoul, Korea. Methods : Data were collected from 228 Japanese tourists who visited' Seoul Center for Culture & Tourism' in Myeong-dong, Seoul, Korea. We measured factors which influence to preference for medical tourism. The data were analyzed by T-test, ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis. Results : The major findings were as follows ; Japanese tourists preferred medical products in the order of skin care, oriental medicine treatment, health screening, and scaling & teeth whitening. They considered technical level of medical staff most importantly, followed by safety of medical products, communication during diagnosis and treatment, follow-up service, modernization of medical facilities and equipment, and the reasonable medical expenses. Japanese tourists' preferred medical institutions in the order of a university hospital, a specialty clinic, a special hospital, They said they intend to pay 50,000 to 150,000 yen for medical tourism. The preference to medical tourism products are that single women group in their twenties and thirties for skin care, married people group aged over thirties preferred oriental medicine treatment, and married men aged over forties and high income earners favored health screening. Conclusions : It should be considered carefully that the preference exists on some factors especially for Japanese tourist. Further research about preference on medical tourism products for tourists from the other countries is required appropriately to fulfill the needs.

The Study on the Improvement of Curriculum for the Development of Beauty Tourism: Focusing on IPA (뷰티관광 활성화를 위한 교육과정 개선 방안 연구: IPA를 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study is to improve the curriculum to revitalize beauty tourism by analyzing the difference in importance and satisfaction of the beauty tourism curriculum. And online and offline surveys were conducted for workers in the beauty tourism industry, and IPA analysis was conducted using 208 valid samples. As a result of the analysis, it was found that there was a difference in the importance and satisfaction of all educational contents. And than, it was found that there were no educational contents that needed improvement, and the training courses that required continuous maintenance were field practice, major practice, service and manners, customer consultation, customer management, marketing, and interpersonal relationships. Education content with low priority was found to be foreign languages, multicultural understanding, tourism, and beauty management. Based on the results, directions for improving the curriculum for revitalizing beauty tourism were suggested.

Guesthouse-based Backpackers in Seoul: Destination Image, Knowledge Management and Q Method

  • To attract visitors, it is essential to make destinations understandable by developing appropriate destination image. However, managing destination image properly is very complicated in order to induce visitors. In this study, the perceived destination image of backpackers who stay in guesthouse located in Seoul is explored. The purpose of the study was to examine the image of Seoul as a tourism destination. To this end, Q methodology, a technique designed for the systematic study of subjectivity in terms of beliefs, opinions, and attitudes is employed. More specifically, the statements representing different destination images perceived by sampled backpacking visitors were Q-sorted. Results showed that four different clusters of sampled backpacking visitors present four different perceived images accordingly: Seoulizer, Patternaizer, Utilizer, and Socializer. The results of this study imply that backpackers provide idiosyncratic perceptions of destination image, which are different from those offered by general travelers who are less sensitive to travel budgets. In addition, for tourism management, based on this study's results, destination marketing planners are encouraged to perform knowledge management, develop more appropriate plans and customized marketing strategies according to different perceived destination images of backpackers.

Overtourism in Jeju Island: The Influencing Factors and Mediating Role of Quality of Life

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze how the problems caused by overtourism affect the quality of life of Jeju residents and their perceptions of the overtourism phenomenon by exploring related factors for future policy implications. In the research model, each independent factor related to tourists affects the quality of life of residents, and the mediation variable (QoL) ultimately agrees with overtourism. This study uses Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM), which is less influenced by the sample size. The research is based on 360 questionnaires. The test results showed that cultural factors affected the QoL statistically at 1% significance level, and economic factors were significant at 5%. The quality of life variable affects the agreement of overtourism (p-value 1% significance level). An indirect effect analysis on whether each independent factor affects the overtourism factor through the parameter of the QoL of the residents showed that the cultural factor at 5% level statistically affected it, and economic factors were significant at 10%. In conclusion, we recommend implementing both economic and cultural factors to reduce the negative perception of overtourism for the policy planning. Further research in multiple aspects should be continued to overcome the vulnerability of the Island destination tourism.

  • The remarkable development of the internet causes us to have too many homepages and content, to be specialized and subdivided, and to need 'CMS'(Content Management System). Currently, CMS have been developed by many solution providers and studied in many ways. However, it is hard to find a system which is able to construct the specified Culture & Tourism content rapidly and managed them efficiently. Step on these requirement, this paper focus on design and implementation of unified CMS based on recursive relation object model which can be satisfied the demand of the usual people's information service of Culture & Tourism and which can be installed and managed the standardized Culture & Tourism content easily.

A Study on the Moderating Effect of Psychological Power in the Relationahip between Service, Image, and Satisfaction in the Tourism Context

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between service quality, destination image, and tourist satisfaction for foreign tourists visiting Korea, and in particular, to analyze the moderating effect of psychological power in the relationship. Research design, data, and methodology: A research model was derived through existing literature research and a survey was conducted on foreign tourists visiting Korea. Structural equation model of SPSS and AMOS24.0 were used for data analysis and hypothesis testing. Results: The tourism service quality affects the image of tourist attractions. Images of tourist attractions were found to affect tourism satisfaction. It was found that the lower the psychological power, the greater the effect on the relationship between service quality and image, and the relationship between image and satisfaction. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that service quality at travel destinations is a key factor in order to enhance the image and satisfaction of Korean tourist destinations for foreigners visiting Korea. On the other hand, since the image and satisfaction level of the tourism destination vary depending on personal factors such as psychological power, it suggests that travel industry workers or researchers should develop and operate services tailored to the individual characteristics of the tourists.

A Study on Tourism Companies' Awareness for Introduction of an Environmental Tourism Certification Program (친환경 인증제도 도입을 위한 관광업계 인식 조사)

  • This study aims to examine a significant difference in performance of, and attitudes towards, environmental tourism among domestic tourism companies by their types and scale, and to propose a policy direction for a new certification program on environmental tourism. This study conducted a survey with 152 tourism accommodations and 150 travel agencies. As a result, this study found that tourism accommodations and a large scale of companies had participated in environmental management practices more often than travel agencies and a small scale of companies. Also, tourism accommodations were more likely to recognize well a relation between their business and environmental tourism, and were more likely to participate in a new certification program than travel agencies. A large scale of tourism accommodations showed more positive attitudes towards environmental tourism than a small scale of tourism accommodations. On the other hand, all of the travel agencies showed less positive attitudes towards environmental tourism regardless of their size. In conclusion, this study proposed that the government should adopt a different approach to a new certification program according to tourism companies' types and scale, also it should provide a variety of incentives and supports for tourism companies.
