  • High strength cement composites (W/C=0.1) were prepared by using various blending materials such as SiC whisker and white carbon (hydrated silica: SiO2·nH2O). The effect of various blending materials on the microstructure and strength of the hardened cement paste were investigated in the view of fracture mechanics. The plain specimen showed 101 MPa of flexural strength, 81 GPa of Young's modulus and 1.32 MPam1/2 of fracture toughness. When the blending materials were added to the composites, their values were enhanced to about 110∼138 MPa, 95∼146 GPa and 1.32∼1.87MPam1/2 respectively. The improvement of the mechanical strength for the hardened cement paste may be due to the removal of macropores, the reduction of total porosity, pozzolanic reaction and the increase of various fracture toughening effect.

  • In this study, hydroxyapatite (HAp) and hydroxyapatite-yttria stabilized zirconia (HAp-3YSZ) with 20 vol.%-($ZrO_2+3%mol\;Y_2O_3$) nanopowders were consolidated very rapidly to full density by High-frequency induction heat sintering (HFIHS). Effects of temperature and the addition of 3YSZ on the toughness, hardness and microstructure properties have been studied. 3YSZ second phase toughening HAp composites with higher toughness were successfully developed at relatively low temperatures through this technique. Compared with hardness and toughness obtained for pure HAp, the hardness and toughness for HAp-20vol. % 3YSZ were much higher.

  • The effect of Cu content on microstructure and mechanical properties of nano-sized Cu dispersed $Al_2O_3(Al_2O_3/Cu)$ nanocomposites was investigated. The nanocomposites with Cu content of 2.5 to 10 vol% were prepared by reduction and hot-pressing of $Al_2O_3/CuO$ powder mixtures. The nanocomposites with Cu content of 2.5 and 5vol% exhibited the maximum fracture strength of 820MPa and enhanced toughness compared with monolithic $Al_2O_3$. The strengthening was mainly attributed to the refinement of $Al_2O_3$ matrix grains. The toughening mechanism was discussed by the observed microstructural feature based on crack bridging.

  • The morphology and impact strength of alloys of high density polyethylene(HDPE) and nylon-6(PA) with modified $ethylene-{\alpha}-olefin$ copolymer(OCP) as compatibilizer and impact modifier were measured by the scanning electron microscope(SEM) and the notched Izod impact test(and the high rate impact test), respectively. HDPE is incompatible with PA and specimens obtained from simple mechanical mixing show the inferior properties. However, it was indicated that OCP played roles of not only impact modifier but also compatibilizer. High rate impact test results were different from those of the notched Izod impact test, but in both tests OCP was effective for HDPE/PA blends. From SEM observation, the size of the dispersed phase in alloys prepared with OCP is much smaller than that of alloys without OCP and the interfacial adhesion of alloys prepared with OCP is also better. Toughening mechanism of polymer blends was discussed by combining the morphology analysis with mechanical and thermal properties.

  • The R-curve for in situ-toughened SiC-30 wt% TiC composites was estimated by the indentation-strength method and compared to that of monolithic SiC with toughened microstructure. Both materials exhibited rising R-curve behavior. The SiC-TiC composites, however, displayed better damage tolerance and higher resistance to crack growth. Total volume fractions of SiC key grains, which take part in toughening mechanisms such as crack bridging and crack deflection, were 0.607 for monolithic SiC ceramics and 0.614 for SiC-TiC composites. From the microstructural characterization and the residual stress calculation, it was inferred that this superior performance of SiC-TiC composites can be attributed to stress-induced microcracking at heterophase (SiC/TiC) boundaries and some contribution from carck deflection by TiC grains.

  • Al2O3-ZrO2(ZTA) composites were fabricated by a surface-induced coating of the precursor for the ZrO2 phase on the kinetically stable colloid particles of Al2O3. The fabricated composites were characterized by a uniform spatial distribution of the dispersed ZrO2 phase and by the absence of large ZrO2 grains throughout the Al2O3 matrix. The fracture toughness (KIC) and the bending strength of ZTA composites sintered at 1$600^{\circ}C$, respectively, were 5.6 MPa.m1/2 (for 20 wt% ZrO2) and 600 MPa (for 15wt% ZrO2). The fraction of tetragonal ZrO2 phase decreases as the total content of ZrO2, suggesting that both the stress-induced tlongrightarrowm transformation and the microcrack nucleation contribute to the toughening of the ZTA composites fabricated by the surface-induced coating.

  • Partially stabilized zironia with magnesia (Mg-PSZ) is known as one of the toughest monolithic ceramics. However, the very large grain sizes obtained after sintering at a high solution-heat treatment temperature in the cubic region of the phase diagram limit the strength of this material rather modest. In this study fine-grained Mg-PSZ materials were fabricated by adding TiC particles as a dispersed phase. Samples were hot-pressed at $1750^{\circ}C$ and then annealed at $1420^{\circ}C$ for various times. Grain growth was retarded severely by the TiC particles resulting in grain sizes smaller by more than one order of magnitude than those of PSZ without TiC. The fine-grained microstructure lead to doubly-increased fracture strength while maintaining the same level of high fracture toughness as that of conventional Mg-PSZ without TiC particles.

  • Geopolymer composites reinforced with different layers of woven flax fabric are fabricated using lay- up technique. Mechanical properties, such as flexural strength, flexural modulus and fracture toughness of geopolymer composites reinforced with 2.4, 3 and 4.1 wt% flax fibres are studied. The fracture surfaces of the composites are also examined using scanning electron microscopy. The results show that all the mechanical properties of the composites are improved by increasing the flax fibre contents. It is also found that the mechanical properties of flax fabric reinforced geopolymer composites are superior to pure geopolymer matrix. Micro-structural analysis of fracture surface of the composites indicated evidence of various toughening mechanisms by flax fabrics in the composites.

  • Rubber-modified epoxy resins have been employed as adhesive and matrix materials for glass and corbon-fiber composites. The behavior of fracture around a crack tip for rubber-modified epoxy resin is investigated through the acoustic emission (AE) analysis of compact tension specimens. Damage zone and rubber particles distributed around a crack tip were observed by a polarized optical microscope and an atomic force microscope (AFM). The damage zone in front of pre-crack tip in rubber-modified specimen $(15wt\%\; rubber)$ began to form at about $13\%$ level of the fracture load and grew in size until $57\%$ load level. After that, the crack propagated in a stick-slip manner. Based on time-frequency analysis of AE signals and microscopic observation of damage zone, it was thought that AE signals with frequency bands of 0.15-0.20 MHz and 0.200.30 MHz were generated from cavitation in the damage zone and crack propagation, respectively.
