  • Amino terminated polyetherimide(ATPEI) has been synthesized by bisphthalic anhydride arid m-phenylenediamine, after that characterized by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC), thermogravimetric analyzer(TGA). Fourier transform (FT-IR) spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography(GPC). ATPEI was blend to improve the toughness of bisphenol-A type epoxy resin which was cured by nadic methyl anhydride(NMA). The fracture toughness and the molphology of the toughened epoxy resin was evaluated. The toughness of ATPEI modified epoxy resin was higher than that of the PEI modified epoxy resin. In addtion, carbon fiber/ATPEI modified epoxy resin composites were fabricated and the mechanical properties of the resulted composites were investigated.

  • Interfacial properties and microfailure modes or electrodeposition(ED) treated carbon fiber reinforced polyetherimide(PEI) toughened epoxy composites were investigated using microdroplet test. ED was performed to improve the interfacial shear strength(IFSS). As PEI content increased, IFSS increased due to enhanced toughness and plastic deformation of PEI. In the untreated cafe, IFSS Increased with adding PEI content, and IFSS of pure PEI matrix showed the highest. On the other hand, thor ED-treated case IFSS increased with PEI content with rather low improvement rate. In the untreated case, neat epoxy resin appeared brittle microfailure mode, whereas pure PEI matrix exhibited more likely ductile microfailure mode. In the ED-treated case, neat epoxy exhibited more ductile fracture compared to the untreated case. Interfacial properties of epoxy-PEI composite can be affected efficiently by both the control of matrix toughness and ED treatment.

On the other hand, for ED-treated case IFSS increased with PEI content with rather low improvement rate. The work of adhesion between fiber and matrix was not directly proportional to IFSS for both the untreated and ED-treated cases. The matrix toughness might contribute to IFSS more likely than the surface wettability. Interfacial properties of epoxy-PEI composite can be affected efficiently by both the control of matrix toughness and ED treatment.

  • Amino terminated polyetherimide (AP-PEI) has been synthesized using 2,2'-bis [4-(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)-phenyl]propane dianhydride (BPADA) and m-phenylenediamine. Polyetherimide containing pendant carboxy group (CP-PEI) has also been synthesized by the reaction of BPADA, m-phenylenediamine and 3,5-diaminobenzoic acid. The modified PEIs were used as toughening agent for diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A epoxy resin which was cured with nadic methyl anhydride (NMA). Thermal properties, fracture toughness ($K_{IC}$) and solvent resistance of toughened epoxy resin were measured. The $K_{IC}$ of epoxy resin containing 20 phr of AT-PEI was 2.88$MPa{\cdot}m^{0.5}$ without sacrificing thermal properties. The $K_{IC}$ of epoxy resin which contained 20 phr of CP-PEI was 2.82$MPa{\cdot}m^{0.5}$.

  • Amino terminated PES-CTBN-PES triblock copolymer was synthesized from PES oligomer and commercial CTBN rubber (CTBN1300$\times$13), and molecular weight of the copolymer was controlled to be 15000 g/mole. The copolymer was utilized to toughen diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA) epoxy resin which was cured with 4,4'-diaminodi-phenylsulfone (DDS) and subjected to the measurement of thermal properties, fracture toughness ( $K_{IC}$), flexural properties and solvent resistance. The properties were compared with those from the samples modified by CTBN/PES blends. The maximum loading of copolymer into the epoxy resin was 40 wt% without utilizing solvent, at which $K_{IC}$ fracture toughness of 2.21 MPa${\cdot}m^{0.5}$ was obtained without sacrificing flexural properties and chemical resistance. However, the epoxy resin modified with PES/CTBN blend exhibited much lower $K_{IC}$ and flexural properties compared to the epoxy resins toughened by PES-CTBN-PES copolymers.

  • A macroscopic yield criterion for porous solids with pressure-sensitive matrices modeled by Coulomb's yield criterion was obtained by generalizing Gurson's yield criterion with consideration of the hydrostatic yield stresses for a spherical thick-walled shell and by fitting the finite element results of a voided cube. The macroscopic yield criterion is valid for negative mean normal stresses as well as for positive mean normal stresses. From the yield criterion, a plastic potential function for the porous solids was derived either for plastic normality flow or for plastic non-normality flow of pressure- sensitive matrices. In addition, the elastic relation, an evolution equation of the plastic flow stress of the matrices and an evolution equation of the void volume fraction were presented to complete a set of constitutive relations. The set of constitutive relations was implemented into a finite element code ABAQUS to analyze the material behavior of rubber-toughened epoxies. The cavitation and the deformation behavior were analyzed around a crack tip under three-point bending and around notch tips under four-point bending. In the numerical analyses, the cavitation of rubber particles was considered via a stress-controlled nucleation model. The numerical results indicate that a reasonable cavitation zone can be obtained with void nucleation controlled by the macroscopic mean normal stress, and a plastic zone is smaller around a notch tip under compression than under tension. These numerical results agree well with corresponding experimental results on the cavitation and plastic zones.

  • Interfacial and microfailure properties of carbon liber/bismaleimide (BMI) composites were evaluated using both tensile fragmentation and compressive Broutman tests with acoustic emission (AE). Since BMI is rather difficult matrix to apply for the conventional fragmentation test because of its too low elongation and too brittle and high modulus properties, dual matrix composite system was applied. After carbon fiber/BMI composite was prepared for rod shape by controlling differing curing stage, composites rod was embedded in toughened epoxy as outer matrix. The typical microfailure modes including fiber break, matrix cracking, and interlayer failure were observed during tensile testing, whereas the diagonal slippage in fiber ends was observed during compressive test. On the other hand, AE amplitudes of BMI matrix fracture were higher than carbon fiber tincture under tensile test because BMI matrix has very brittle and high modulus. The waveform of signals coming from BMI matrix fractures was consistent with AE amplitude result under tensile tests.
