Experimental studies have been performed to observe the basic phenomena of waste bed combustion in MSW incinerator. A reduced scale apparatus was utilized to simulate the combustion behavior in real plant with 1-dimensional transient behavior at the experimental setup, which uses wet cubic wood with ash content as simulated waste. LHV (lower heating value) of solid fuel, fuel particle size and flow rate of combustion air were taken as important parameters of the bed combustion. For the quantitative analysis, FPR (flame propagation rate), TBT (total burn-out time) and PBT (particle burn-out time) was defined. LHV represent the capability of heat release of the fuel, so that a higher LHV results in faster reaction rate of the fuel bed, which is shown by higher FPR. Fuel particle size is related with surface area per unit mass as well as heat and mass transfer coefficient. As the particle size increases the FPR decreases owing to decreasing specific surface area. Air injection supplies oxygen to the reaction zone. However oversupply of combustion air increases convection cooling of the bed and possibly extinguishes the flame.

Advantages of the deeply underground subway are underground space efficiency, high speed, decrease of noise and vibration. However, when fire occurs in the deeply underground subway station, large casualties are occurred like Daegu subway station fire due to the increase of evacuation distance. In this study, a numerical analysis was performed by using the fire and evacuation analysis program FDS+EVAC for smoke movement and evacuation in Beotigogae station among the deeply underground subway station. Heat release rate of carriage fire was set 10MW and the fire growth rate was ultrafast. As a result, the smoke move to the exit at 1085 second. The total evacuation time took 956 second.
Analytical investigation of acoustic wave scattering from turbulent premixed flames was conducted to evaluate the acoustic energy amplification/damping. Such acoustic energy change is attributed to the acoustic velocity jump due to flame's heat release. Small perturbation method up to second order and stochastic analysis were utilized to formulate net acoustic energy and the energy transfer from coherent to incoherent energy. Randomly wrinkled flame surface is responsible for the energy transfer from coherent to incoherent field. Nondimensional parameters that govern net acoustic energy were determined: rms height and correlation length of flame front, incident wave frequency, incidence angle, and temperature ratio. The dependence of net acoustic energy upon these parameters is illustrated by numerical simulations in case of Gaussian statistics of flame front. Total net energy was amplified and the major factors that affect such energy amplification are incidence angle and temperature ratio. Coherent (incoherent) energy is damped (amplified) with rms height and correlation length of flame front.

In this study, reduced-scale experiments were conducted to analyze smoke movement in tunnel fire with roof vent. The 1/20 scale experiments were carried out under the Froude scaling using gasoline pool fire ranging from 7.3 to 15.4 cm in diameter with total heat release rate from 1.0 to 8.46kw. In case of 1 m high vent, smoke front reached to the tunnel exit at about 16 sec delayed with ventilation. The delay time grew longer with the vent height. The temperature after the vent was lower than that without the vent. The exit temperature declined maximum of $20^{\circ}C$ after passing the vent. It was confirmed that the thickness of smoke layer was maintained uniformly under the 25% height of the tunnel through the visualized smoke now by a laser sheet and the digital camcorder.

Repair and strengthening is necessary to extend the service life of existing buildings. Polymer-modified cement mortar (PCM) has been extensively used as a high performance material particularly for finishing and repairing works in concrete building because of itsexcellent adhesion, waterproofing, resistance to chemical attack, and workability. As PCM contains organic polymer, it is necessary to clarify its properties at high temperature under fire, on which sufficient data are not available. This paper evaluated the burn-up characteristics of polymer-modified cement mortar with cone calorimeter test, non-combustibility test and flammability test with experimental parameters such as the types of polymer, unit-polymer content, polymer-cement ratio and thickness of the specimen.
The major purpose of this study is to find the optimized split injection quantities and dwell angles for PM reduction without increasing NOx. The tests were performed on a Common-Rail DI Diesel Engine to obtain optimum injection timing and duration. In this study, total injection quantities were divided into the ratio of 25-75%, 50-50% and 75-25%. NOx and PM were measured on the condition of the same bsfc by increasing dwell angles. It was found that the split injection reduced NOx with dwell angle increase. For 50_50, 75_25% split injection cases, PM was reduced with 10 to 12(CAD) dwell angles. For 25_75% split injection 33% PM reduction was achieved with 8 to 12(CAD) dwell angles.

In this study, reduced-scale experiments were conducted to analyze smoke movement in tunnel fires according to vepntilation method. The 1/20 scale experiments were carried out under the Froude scaling using gasoline pool fires ranging from 6.6 to 10 cm in diameter corresponding to total heat release rate from 0.714 to 2.5 kW. Temperatures near the ceiling were lowered by installing the vent, and much lowered by operating fan compared wiht tile case without vent. In case of forced ventilation, the exhaust fan was more effective than the intake fan. Vertical temperatures at the upper part of the tunnel were also lowered by installing the vent. But, when suction fan was operated, temperatures at the lower part of the tunnel were higher than that without vent.

Upon direct/indirect exposure to flame or heat, composite structures may burn or thermally buckle. This issue becomes more important in the natural fiber-based composite structures with higher flammability and lower mechanical properties. The main goal of the present study was to obtain an optimal eco-friendly composite system with low flammability and high thermal buckling resistance. The studied composite consisted of polypropylene (PP) and short abaca fiber (AF) with eggshell powder (ESP) and halloysite clay nanotubes (HNTs) additives. An optimal base composite, consisting of 30 wt.% AF and 70 wt.% PP, abbreviated as OAP, was initially introduced based on burning rate (BR) and the Young's modulus determined by horizontal burning test (HBT) and tensile test, respectively. The effects of adding ESP to the base composite were then investigated with the same experimental tests. The results indicated that though the BR significantly decreased with the increase of ESP content up to 6 wt.%, it had a very destructive influence on the stiffness of the composite. To compensate for the damaging effect of ESP, small amount of HNT was used. The performance of OAP composite with 6 wt.% ESP and 3 wt.% HNT (OAPEH) was explored by conducting HBT, cone calorimeter test (CCT) and tensile test. The experimental results indicated a 9~23 % reduction in almost all flammability parameters such as heat release rate (HRR), total heat released (THR), maximum average rate of heat emission (MARHE), total smoke released (TSR), total smoke production (TSP), and mass loss (ML) during combustion. Furthermore, the combination of 6 wt.% ESP and 3 wt.% HNT reduced the stiffness of OAP to an insignificant amount by maximum 3%. Moreover, the char residue analysis revealed the distinct differences in the formation of char between AF/PP and AF/PP/ESP/HNT composites. Afterward, dilatometry test was carried out to examine the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of OAP and OAPEH samples. The obtained results showed that the CTE of OAPEH composite was about 18% less than that of OAP. Finally, a theoretical model was used based on first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) to predict the critical bucking temperatures of the OAP and OAPEH composite plates. It was shown that in the absence of mechanical load, the critical buckling temperatures of OAPEH composite plates were higher than those of OAP composites, such that the difference between the buckling temperatures increased with the increase of thickness. On the contrary, the positive effect of CTE reduction on the buckling temperature decreased by raising the axial compressive mechanical load on the composite plates which can be assigned to the reduction of stiffness after the incorporation of ESP. The results of present study generally stated that a suitable combination of AF, PP, ESP, and HNT can result in a relatively optimal and environmentally friendly composite with proper flame and thermal buckling resistance with no significant decline in the stiffness.

Mechanical alloying (MA) by high energy ball mill of pure copper and niobium powders was carried out under the Ar gas atmosphere. The supersaturated solid solution can be produced in the range up to $Cu_xNb_{100-x}$(x=5-30) by MA for 120 hrs, as demonstrated by X-ray diffraction, DSC analysis and the electronic studies through a change in the superconducting transition in the low-temperature specific heat. The $Cu_{30}Nb_{70}$ samples ball-milled for 120 hrs exhibit only a broad exothermic heat release. The total energy, ${\Delta}H_t$ accumulated during MA far the mixture of $Cu_{30}Nb_{70}$ powders increased with milling time and approached the saturation value of 7.5 kJ/mol after 120 h of milling. It can be seen that the free energy difference between the supersaturated solid solution and the mixture of $Cu_{30}Nb_{70}$ powders is estimated to be 7 kJ/mol by Miedema et al. Hence it is thermodynamically possible to assume the formation of a supersaturated solid solution phase in this system.
Pine trees, which account for 23% of the forested area of the Republic of Korea, are highly vulnerable to fire in comparison to broad-leaved trees due to the presence of consistent water tube sections throughout the year and resin that is composed of approximately 20% oil. In addition, the pattern of forest fires is determined by weather, topographic conditions, and fluctuation in moisture content. Therefore, when fire breaks out in pine tree forests during the dry season (January to March), it is difficult to extinguish, and it quickly spreads. In this study, the combustion characteristics of pine needles, pine cones, and pine branches in the water tube sections of living pine trees were compared and analyzed in accordance with the moisture content as per the ISO 5660-1. The monthly moisture content was analyzed from January to March, and it was found to be the lowest in March, with 53.6% for pine needles, 51.9% for pine branches, and 10.9% for pine cones. In particular, pine cones were more vulnerable to fire as compared to pine needles and pine branches because their moisture content was more than five times lower than that of pine needles and branches. The ignition time, which affects the speed of flame propagation, was the most rapid in March, and the fastest ignition time was for pine cones, at 19 seconds, followed by 34 seconds for pine needles, and 256 seconds for pine branches. The pine branches were the last to be ignited due to the effect of density, according to the thickness and specific gravity of the specimen. The peak heat release rate, which is a measurable index of fire intensity, was analyzed for pine cones and found to be 184.28 kW/m2 , while the mean effective heat of combustion was 19.79 MJ/kg, and the total heat release rate was 39.7 MJ/m2 , and these values were higher than those of pine branches and pine needles. Thus, we determined that the flame propagation speed and fire intensity according to the moisture content can be used to evaluate the risk of fire to the water tube section of pine trees. It is suggested that because of the combustion characteristics of the pine cone in March, that is when the forest is most vulnerable to fires.
