The developmental times of mealworm beetle larvae, Tenebrio molitor were studied at six temperatures ranging from 15 to $30^{\circ}C$ with 60~70% RH, and a photoperiod of 14L:10D. Mortality of larval period was very low at 17 and $20^{\circ}C$ but did not die over $22^{\circ}C$. Developmental time of larva was decreased with increasing temperature. The total developmental time of T. molitor larvae was longest at $17^{\circ}C$ (244.3 days) and shortest at $30^{\circ}C$ (110.8 days). Egg and larvae were not developed at $15^{\circ}C$. The lower developmental threshold and effective accumulative temperatures for the total larval stages were $6.0^{\circ}C$ and 2564.1 degree-days, respectively. The relationship between developmental rate and temperature was fitted by a linear model and nonlinear model of Logan-6($r^2$=0.95). The distribution of completion of each development stage was well described by the 2-parameter Weibull function ($r^2$=0.8502~0.9390).
This study evaluated the effect of steam heating, gamma irradiation, and ultraviolet (UV) irradiation on microorganism reduction in order to determine an effective sterilization method for red pepper powder. The effect of each treatment on the reduction of thermoduric bacteria and total aerobic bacteria in red pepper powder were as follows: 10 kGy gamma irradiation, reduction of 4 log and 6 log CFU/g, respectively; 12 mW/㎠ UV irradiation (264 nm UV-C), reduction of less than 1 log CFU/g; steam heating at 120℃ for 40 s, reduction of approximately 2 log CFU/g. High-temperature short-time processing at 110℃ for 30 s reduced the total bacterial count in Gochujang solution from 5.70 log CFU/g to 2.26 log CFU/g; at 121℃, the solution was commercially sterile. Steam heating resulted in 1, 2, and 4 log microbial inactivation in garlic, onion, and pepper powder, respectively. Steam sterilization, which consumers prefer over other methods, may be an effective method for reducing microorganisms in spice powders, including those in red pepper powder.
Studies were carried out to investigate the relationship of the remaining percentage of antiseptics and the preservative effect of combined antiseptics and gamma radiation on the keeping quality of pork sausage. Antiseptics quantities, total bacterial counts, and pH were examined during the storage at $5^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1) After irradiation, quantities of antiseptics decreased in proportion to the level of dosage and K-SOA showed more radiosensitivity than AF-2 (p<0.01). 2) The remaining percentage of antiseptics during storage were higher in samples of more irradiated and stored at the lower temperature. AF-2 decreased less than K-SOA. 3) The correlation between the increase of total bacteria counts and percentage of antiseptics survival in sausage was highly significant(p<0.01). High doses of irradiation, storage at lower temperature and use of AF-2, however, seemed to be effective in controlling the increase of total bacterial flora. 4) From the relationships among quantities of antiseptics, number of total bacteria and sensory evaluation, it was shown that the most suitable radiation dose was considered to be 0.5 Mrad, which was superior to 0.75 Mrad in keeping qualities and nonirradiation odor. 5) Effect of gamma ray on the heme pigments of sausage surface was not recognized.
The correlations between environmental influences on microorganisms in soil and its effects on disease development in ginseng field were studied to obtain some useful data for increasing ginseng production and effective preventive measures against the root rot caused by soil-borne pathogens. The diseased replanted ginseng fields were selected as the diseased field and the healthy plot in first planted field selected as control in three major Korean ginseng producing areas such as Kumsan, Goesan and Poonggi. The physicochemical characteristics of the soil were analyzed and microorganisms susceptible for root rot of ginseng, such as Fusarium spp. and general fungi were investigated for their population density in various soil conditions. Correlations between soil microbial populations and environmental factors were investigated. The numbers of Fusarium spp. propagules were abundant in fall in both soil conditions. The numbers of Fusarium spp. were 1.9 to 2.6 times higher in replanted field than first planted field except Goesan area. Relative ratio of Fusarium spp. to total fungi propagules in replanted field was 1.6 times higher in replanted field than first planted field indicating higher numbers of Fusarium spp. distributed in replanted field of soil. The numbers of propagules of total fungi were increased in June and July and there was no sensitive variation according to the temperature. There was no significant difference in vertical distributions of total fungi according to soil depth, while the total fungi were abundant in the surface layer and $10{\sim}15\;cm$ layer. The contents of organic matter and phosphate in healthy field were somewhat high, and phosphate/organic matter ratio and Mg contents were high in diseased field. All of the soils showed a weak acidic pH of 4.5 to 5.7. Soil moisture contents were increased during winter season, but did not show any significant changes during the growing periods, showing 24.6% in healthy field and 19.5% in diseased field respectively. Soil temperature was the highest in July and August and the lowest in January and February.
Objectives To check marker content for appropriate quality control of Woohwangchungsimwon sterilized to ensure microbiological safety and to observe antioxidant activity for any changes in efficacy. Methods To measure any effects of sterilization on the effective compounds, 8 ingredients of Woohwangchungsimwon were screened for any changes in marker content using HPLC-DAD. Using the colorimetric method on the microplate reader any changes in total phenolic compound and flavonoid levels were observed. Antioxidant activity was measured using the DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP. Results Of the ingredients of Woohwangchungsimwon, 8 were subject to quantitative analysis before and after sterilization. 21.6 mg and 1.93 mg of Glycyrrhizin was found in Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fischer pre and post sterilization, respectively. Decursin found in Angelica gigas Nakai increased from 0.16 mg to 0.29 mg after sterilization. Bilirubin found in Gallstone of Bostaurusvar. domesticus increased from 0.24 mg to 0.33 mg. Cinnamic acid found in Cinnamomum cassia Blume increased from 0.02 mg to 0.05 mg. Ginsenoside Rb1 found in Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer decreased from 0.02 mg to 0.14 mg. Paeoniflorin found in Paeonia lactiflora Pallas increased from 1.05 mg to 1.13 mg. Amygdalin found in Armeniacae Amarum Semen increased from 2.68 mg to 2.83 mg. L-muscone found in Musk increased from 0.63 mg to 0.76 mg. As for total phenolic compound and total flavonoid content, there was a 1.22 and 4.15-fold increase. DPPH and ABTS increased by 20.45% and 20.69%, respectively. FRAP activity was 2.78 times more active post stabilization. Conclusions This study confirmed that high temperature high pressure steam sterilization, a method used to ensure microbiological safety of Woohwangchungsimwon, does not affect marker content; in other words, does not affect quality of the Woohwangchungsimwon. It could also be seen that total phenolic compound and flavonoid content increased after sterilization. An antioxidant activity test showed that there was significantly increased activity of antioxidants.

Various functional and useful components in Portulaca oleracea were extracted with ethanol and the optimum solvent conditions were set by monitoring of response surface methodology(RSM). A central composite design for optimization was applied to investigate the effects of the three independent variables of extraction temperature, ethanol concentration, and extraction time, on dependent variables including total phenolics, electron-donating ability, brown clolor and total flavonoids of Portulaca oleracea. The content of total phenol was essentially unaffected by extraction time or extraction temperature, but it was highly influenced by ethanol concentration. The maximum total phenol content was 31.70mg/mL obtained at 45.84% of ethanol concentration, $79.66^{\circ}C$, and after 2.67hr of extraction. Electron-donating ability (EDA) was affected by ethanol concentration and the maximum EDA was 74.67mg/mL at 52.95% ethanol concentration, $52.33^{\circ}C$ and 4.84hr of extration time. The browning color was rarely affected by extraction time but, it was highly influenced by ethanol concentration and extraction temperature. The maximum extent of browning color was obtained at 97.75% of ethanol concentraion, $65.88^{\circ}C$ and 2.93hr of extraction time. The content of total flavonoid was significantly influenced by extraction time, and the maximum total flavonoid level was 58.28mg/mL obtained at 96.62% ethanol concentration, $61.87^{\circ}C$ after 3.70hr of extraction. As a result, The optimal conditions for effective extraction were predicted as follows, 70.3% of ethanol concentration, $62.1^{\circ}C$ of extraction temperature and 3.3hr of extraction time.
In this study, an Al-0.7wt%Fe-0.2wt%Mg-0.2wt%Cu-0.02wt%B alloy was designed to fabricate an aluminum alloy for electrical wire having both high strength and high conductivity. The designed Al alloy was processed by casting, extrusion and drawing processes. Especially, the drawing process was done by severe deformation of a rod with an initial diameter of 12 mm into a wire of 2 mm diameter; process was equivalent to an effective strain of 3.58, and the total reduction in area was 97 %. The drawn Al alloy wire was then annealed at various temperatures of 200 to $400^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes. The mechanical properties, microstructural changes and electrical properties of the annealed specimens were investigated. As the annealing temperature increased, the tensile strength decreased and the elongation increased. Recovery or/and recrystallization occurred as annealing temperature increased, and complete recrystallization occurred at annealing temperatures over $300^{\circ}C$. Electric conductivity increased with increasing temperature up to $250^{\circ}C$, but no significant change was observed above $300^{\circ}C$. It is concluded that, from the viewpoint of the mechanical and electrical properties, the specimen annealed at $350^{\circ}C$ is the most suitable for the wire drawn Al alloy electrical wire.

Total 12 units of high power klystron-modulator systems as microwave source are under operation for 2.5 GeV electron linear accelerator in Pohang Light Source (PLS) linac. The klystron-modulator system has an important role for the stable operation to improve an availability statistics of overall system performance of klystron-modulator system. RF power and beam power of klystron are precisely measured for the effective control of electron beam. A precise measurement and measurement equipment with good response characteristics are demanded for this. Input power of klystron is calculated from the applied voltage and the current on its cathode. Tiny measurement error severely effects RF output power value of klystron. Therefore, special care is needed to measure precise beam voltage. Capacitive voltage divider (CVD), which divides input voltage as capacitance ratio, is intended for the measurement of a beam voltage of 400 kV generated from the klystron-modulator system. Main parameter to determine standard capacitance in the high arm of CVD is dielectric constant of insulation oil. Therefore CVD should be designed to have a minimum capacitance variation due to voltage, frequency and temperature in the measurement range. This paper will be present and discuss the design concept and analysis of capacitive voltage divider for a pulsed high-voltage measurement, and the empirical relations between capacitance effects and oil temperature variation.
A powder in sheath rolling method was applied to the fabrication of a carbon nano tube (CNT) reinforced aluminum composite. A 6061 aluminum alloy tube with outer diameter of 31 mm and wall thickness of 2 mm was used as a sheath material. A mixture of pure aluminum powder and CNTs with a volume content of 5% was filled in the tube by tap filling and then processed to an 85% reduction using multi-pass rolling after heating for 0.5 h at $400^{\circ}C$. The specimen was then further processed at $400^{\circ}C$ by multi-pass hot rolling. The specimen was then annealed for 1 h at various temperatures that ranged from 100 to $500^{\circ}C$. The relative density of the 5vol%CNT/Al composite fabricated using powder in sheath rolling increased with increasing of the rolling reduction, becoming about 97% after hot rolling under 96 % total reduction. The relative density of the composite hardly changed regardless of the increasing of the annealing temperature. The average hardness also had only slight dependence on the annealing temperature. However, the tensile strength of the composite containing the 6061 aluminum sheath decreased and the fracture elongation increased with increasing of the annealing temperature. It is concluded that the powder in sheath rolling method is an effective process for fabrication of CNT reinforced Al matrix composites.
The activity change of lysozyme resulted from its exposure to $Ti-H_2O_2$system in aqueous liquid at room temperature and to ${\gamma}$-irradiation in ice at $195^{\circ}K$ has been measured at room temperature with a Cary-14 spectrophotometer. The enzymatic activity of lysozyme which had been added to a previously flow-mixed solution of $TiCl_3$ and $H_2O_2$ (System I) was compared with the activity of a lysozyme-$H_2O_2$ solution after flow-mixing with $TiCl_3$ (System II), considering the differences between these two activity changes as the extent of the enzymatic inactivation by the involvement of OH radical reaction. The fraction of lysozyme inactivated by OH radical in the system containing 0.0025 M $TiCl_3-0.1M$$H_2O_2$ (ph 3.5) was 13%, When the $TiCl_3$ concentration is double (pH 3.0), the fraction of enzyme inactivated increases to 36%. The activity of the system containing 0.025 M $TiCl_3-0.1$ M $H_2O_2$ (pH 1.5) was essentially zero. The results seem to support the previos view that the production of OH radical should be proportional to $TiCl_3$ concentration when $H_2O_2$ is present in excess. Increase in the extent of inactivation found in system I with increasing $TiCl_3$ concentration may be due to a pH effect. $H_2O_2$ seems to be less effective than $TiCl_3$ in the inactivation. 1% lysozyme solution, when ${\gamma}$-irradiated with a total dose of 3M rads, loses about 20% of its activity. Lowering of temperature also was found to yield a reduction in enzymatic activity.
