  • Recently, for the stabilization estimation of structures, many automatic measuring instruments with expensiveness and high accuracy have been developed and utilized. However, the existing manual measuring systems are almost impossible to measure the real-time for the whole surface of large-scale structures and an automatic measuring system has disadvantages with demanding enormous expense. In this study, 3D digital visual monitoring system was developed by using digital photogrammetry technique. To confirm application of developed system, it was applied to the measurement of the wall displacement of concrete surface and displacement measurement of reinforced-soil wall block. Then, the result of the test was compared with measuring value of total station. Based on the results of the comparison, the application of visual monitoring system was evaluated. The results show that the developed visual monitoring system could be available in displacement measure of structures.

  • It is very important to understand and analyze the interactive behaviour between ground and adjacent structures due to tunneling. With many technological advancement in modern society, numerous methods for analyzing the interactive behaviour are used in a wide range of civil engineering fields. Close range photogrammetry is mainly being used in the field of geotechnical engineering and research on measuring methods associated with GeoPIV has been currently increased. Originally, the close range photogrammetry using target points and aluminum rods for VMS (Vision Measurement System) program has been used. However, applying this has a problem that external errors can be occurred because the target points are artificially installed by hand, and if the grid between points is being wider or narrower, deficient data can be obtained. Therefore, in this study, MATLAB-based No-target program that can analyze displacement without using target was developed. Additionally, this study focused on comparison and verification with existing program through numerical analysis and laboratory model test. Three cases of Greenfield condition, Strip foundation, and Pile foundation were analyzed. From results of VMS program and No-target program, the error rate and reliability of the total displacement and the vertical displacement were analyzed. It was also compared and verified through the finite element numerical program, PLAXIS.

  • The collapsed cases are more and more increasing at the large scaled structures because of increasing of the risk due to natural disasters. The measuring instrument such as inclinometer, total station on reinforced-soil retaining wall has been used that displacement, settlement for stability assessment, maintenance and management of it. But because these has gotten many instability measuring factors for stability analysis of RRW, new system needs to complement disadvantage of existing system. In this study, we considered a application of Visual Monitoring System (VMS) to measure a displacement in face of wall through Lab. test about block assembly of segmental retaining wall during load test.

  • Heavy structures such as large roof structures and superbeams were lifted using hydraulic jacks. Moreover, member verticality and horizontality checks were performed at every construction stage to monitor the measuring tapes for their structural safety, using CCTV. When the relative displacement exceeded the predetermined limit, the hydraulic systems were terminated. After adjusting the relative displacement manually, lifting was resumed. The accuracy of the relative displacement was found not to be reliable, however, due to eye check using CCTV, and it took a long time due to manual adjustment. Moreover, real-time monitoring was impossible. To address these problems, the monitoring-evaluation system for the stable lifting of heavy structures was proposed, using the total station of the automatic-target-recognition type, laser-distance-measuring devices, a data logger, a strain gauge, and others. After developing a program for the operation of the system and for the acquisition of data, a mock-up test was conducted in a large-scale structural laboratory to evaluate the accuracy and applicability of the system. The stable acquisition and applicability of data was confirmed in the test.

  • Optimal net residual dispersions (NRDs) of inline dispersion management (DM) for compensating the signal distortion of $24{\times}40$ Gbps WDM channels in optical transmission links, in which optical phase conjugator (OPC) is placed from 250 km to 750 km by spacing 50 km in 1,000 km total transmission length of single mode fiber (SMF), are induced as a function of various ope positions. And, performance improvement of WDM channels in transmission links with the induced optimal NRD is investigated by comparing with that in transmission links with NRD = 0 ps/nm. It is confirmed that optimal NRDs are decided by displacement of OPC from mid-way of total transmission length, i.e. 500 km, and the determinating and applying of optimal NRD in case of ope displacement into transmitters is more stable and effective than that in case of ope displacement into receivers from 500 km. Also, it is shown that eye opening penalties (EOPs) of WDM channels in transmission links with optimal NRD are improved by 1.5 dB to 3 dB, which are related with OPC position, from that obtained in transmission links with fixed NRD of 0 ps/nm.

  • Objectives of this study were to identify the hotspot for displacement of the on-line water quality sensors, in order to detect illicit discharge of untreated wastewater. A total of twenty-six water quality parameters were measured in sewer networks of the industrial complex located in Daejeon city as a test-bed site of this study. For the water qualities measured on a daily basis by 2-hour interval, the self-organizing maps(SOMs), one of the artificial neural networks(ANNs), were applied to classify the catchments to the clusters in accordance with patterns of water qualities discharged, and to determine the hotspot for priority sensor allocation in the study. The results revealed that the catchments were classified into four clusters in terms of extent of water qualities, in which the grouping were validated by the Euclidean distance and Davies-Bouldin index. Of the on-line sensors, total organic carbon(TOC) sensor, selected to be suitable for organic pollutants monitoring, would be effective to be allocated in D and a part of E catchments. Pb sensor, of heavy metals, would be suitable to be displaced in A and a part of B catchments.

  • The displacement of slope is a key factor in predicting the risk of a landslide. Therefore, the slope displacement should be continuously observed with high accuracy. Recently, high-tech equipment such as optical fiber sensor, GPS, total station and measuring instrument have been used. However, such equipment is poorly used in fields due to economics, environment, convenience and management. Because of this, development of substantial observational techniques for varied slope observation and field applications is needed. This study analyzed the possibility of terrestrial LiDAR for slope monitoring and suggested it as information-obtaining technique for slope investigation and management. For that, this study evaluated the monitoring accuracy of terrestrial LiDAR and performed GRID analysis to read the displacement area with the naked eye. In addition, it suggested a methodology for slope monitoring.

  • Numerical analysis has been performed to estimate maximum settlement, maximum horizontal displacement and total settlement volume at the ground surface due to tunnel excavation varying ground condition, tunnel depth and diameter, and construction condition (volume loss at excavation face). The maximum surface settlement from the numerical analysis has been compared with the maximum settlement at tunnel crown considering ground condition, tunnel depth and diameter, and construction condition, and it has been also compared with the maximum horizontal displacement. In addition, the volume loss ($V_L$) at tunnel excavation face has been compared with the total surface settlement volume ($V_s$) with the variation of ground condition, tunnel depth, and tunnel diameter. The results from the numerical analysis have been compared with field measurements to confirm the applicability and validity of the results and by this comparison it is believed that the numerical results in this study can be utilized practically in analyzing the ground movements due to tunnel excavation.

  • In this paper, a total stress analysis method for gravity quay walls is suggested. The method can evaluate the displacement of the quay walls considering the effect of excess pore pressure developed in backfill soils. This method changes the stiffness of backfill soils according to the expected magnitude of the excess pore pressure. For practical application, evaluation methods are suggested for determining the excess pore pressure ratio developed in the backfill soils and the backfill stiffness that corresponds to the excess pore pressure ratio. This method is important in practical applications because the displacement of the quay walls can be evaluated by using only the basic input properties in the total stress analysis. The applicability of the suggested method was verified by comparing the results of the analysis with the results of 1-g shaking table tests. From the comparison, it was found that the calculated displacements from the suggested method showed good agreement with the measured displacements of the quay walls. It was also found that the excess pore pressure in backfill soils is a governing influence on the dynamic behavior of quay walls.

  • This study was carried out to measure the mechanical properties and the acoustic emission (AE) characteristics of the carbon fiber reinforced composites of several types of the stacking sequence. AE signals were detected during the tensile tests. The number of ringdown counts, total ringdown counts were plotted together with the load-displacement curves. The tensile load-displacement behavior of specimen is compared and discussed based on the measured AE properties in relation to the failure mechanism. With the increase of load, AE signals increased. This showed that failure had being propagated by matrix deformation and cracking, delamination, fiber debonding and breakage. Felicity ratio has been obtained by observation of ;the Kaiser effect according to the variation of load ratio. The reloading tests showed that the felicity ratio decreased obviously when the load ratio or damage increased. These AE characteristics are hopeful to be employed as the criteria to evaluate the failure processes of composites.
