A network pharmacology approach to explore the potential role of Panax ginseng on exercise performance

  • [Purpose] As Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer (ginseng) exhibits various physiological activities and is associated with exercise, we investigated the potential active components of ginseng and related target genes through network pharmacological analysis. Additionally, we analyzed the association between ginseng-related genes, such as the G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), and improved exercise capacity. [Methods] Active compounds in ginseng and the related target genes were searched in the Traditional Chinese Medicine Database and Analysis Platform (TCMSP). Gene ontology functional analysis was performed to identify biological processes related to the collected genes, and a compound-target network was visualized using Cytoscape 3.7.2. [Results] A total of 21 ginseng active compounds were detected, and 110 targets regulated by 17 active substances were identified. We found that the active compound protein was involved in the biological process of adrenergic receptor activity in 80%, G-protein-coupled neurotransmitter in 10%, and leucocyte adhesion to arteries in 10%. Additionally, the biological response centered on adrenergic receptor activity showed a close relationship with G protein through the beta-1 adrenergic receptor gene reactivity. [Conclusion] According to bioavailability analysis, ginseng comprises 21 active compounds. Furthermore, we investigated the ginseng-stimulated gene activation using ontology analysis. GPCR, a gene upregulated by ginseng, is positively correlated to exercise. Therefore, if a study on this factor is conducted, it will provide useful basic data for improving exercise performance and health.

Classification and Spatial Variability Assessment of Selected Soil Properties along a Toposequence of an Agricultural Landscape in Nigeria

  • This study characterize, classify and evaluates the function of topography on spatial variability of some selected soil properties to assist in designing land management that support uniform agricultural production. The study site, an agricultural land, was part of the derived savanna zone in southwest Nigeria. Four soil profile pits each were established along two delineated toposequence and described following the FAO/UNESCO guidelines. Samples were collected from the identified genetic horizons. Properties of four soil series developed on different positions of the two delineated Toposequence viz upper, middle, lower slopes and valley bottom positions respectively were studied. The soil samples were analysed for selected physical and chemical properties and data generated were subjected to descriptive and inferential statistics. The results showed that soil colour, depth and texture varied in response to changes in slope position and drainage condition. The sand content ranged from 61 to 90% while the bulk density ranged between 1.06 g cm-3 to 1.68 g cm-3. The soils were neutral to very strongly acid with low total exchangeable bases. Available phosphorus value were low while the extractable micronutrient concentration varied from low to medium. Soils of Asejire and Iwo series mapped in the study area were classified as Typic isohyperthermic paleustult, Apomu series as Plinthic isohyperthermic paleustult and Jago series as Aquic psamment (USDA Soil Taxonomy). These soils were correlated as Lixisol, Plinthic Lixisol and Fluvisol (World Reference Based), respectively. Major agronomic constraints of the soils associations mapped in the study area were nutrient availability, nutrient retention, slope, drainage, texture, high bulk density and shallow depth. The study concluded that the soils were not homogenous, shows moderate spatial variation across the slope, had varying potentials for sustainable agricultural practices, and thus, the agronomic constraints should be carefully addressed and managed for precision agriculture.

노인 자살의 특성과 자살유형에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Characteristics of Elderly Suicide and Suicidal Type)

  • 본 연구는 스트레스-취약성 모델을 토대로 노인 자살의 독특한 원인과 특성을 살펴보고, 자살의 유형화를 시도하고자 수행되었다. 분석결과, 자살의 취약성 요인으로 개인적 요인과 가족환경적 요인이 밝혀졌다. 개인의 특성과 관련된 요인인 개인적 요인은 개인의 정신건강문제, 신체건강문제, 문제행동으로 분류되었다. 가족환경적 요인은 취약성 요인 중, 가정환경과 관련된 요인들로 가족관계문제와 경제적 문제로 나뉘어졌다. 자살의 촉발사건은 촉발사건의 성격에 따라 분류하였는데, 대인관계적 사건만이 나타났다. 대인관계적 사건은 자살자가 자신에게 중요하게 여기는 사람과의 관계단절 등을 경험하는 대인관계상실 사건과 대인관계상 갈등으로 인해 자살을 하게 된 대인관계갈등 사건으로 분류되었다. 취약성 요인과 촉발사건의 상호 영향력에 따라 자살을 유형화하였으며 자살의 촉발사건은 언급되지 않고 취약성 요인만 언급된 취약형 자살, 촉발사건만이 언급된 사건반응형 자살, 그리고 취약성 요인과 촉발사건이 동시에 언급된 복합형 자살로 분류하였다. 자살유형에 따른 특성과 각각의 자살 예방법에 대해 논의하였으며, 청소년과 성인을 대상으로 한 선행 연구들과의 비교를 통해 노인 자살의 특성을 보다 명백히 살펴보았다.

청소년의 비만과 관련된 요인 분석 및 관련 요인의 변화에 대한 단면조사연구 -청소년건강행태조사를 이용하여- (Factors related to adolescent obesity and changes: a cross-sectional study based on the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey)

  • Objectives: The objective of this study was to identify factors associated with adolescent obesity, as well as any new factors that correlated with a change in the rate of obesity over time. Methods: The study used 5-yearly data collected by the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey starting from the year 2006 up until 2021 (data from 2nd, 7th, 11th, and 17th surveys were analyzed). Factors such as demographics, dietary factors, health behavioral factors, and mental health factors were studied. All data were analyzed using IBM SPSS 27.0, employing chi-square tests and multiple logistic regression analysis. Results: This study included data from a total of 255,200 participants. Factors contributing to obesity varied with time. Over the survey duration of 15 years, low academic achievement, parents with low levels of education, low frequency of fruit consumption, low frequency of fast food intake, long periods of being seated, and high levels of stress were significantly associated with a high rate of obesity. Factors that showed a new correlation with an increase in obesity rates included living with single parents, low frequency of muscle strengthening exercises, and experiencing intense sadness and despair in the past year. Factors that were correlated with a change in obesity rates over time included household economic status, frequency of carbonated beverage consumption, frequency of intense physical activity, and frequency of alcohol consumption. Breakfast intake and smoking were not significantly associated with obesity rates in the 15-year period. Conclusions: While several factors associated with obesity remained consistent over time, several new factors have emerged in response to social, economic, and environmental changes contributed to a change in obesity rate over time. Therefore, to prevent and manage adolescent obesity, continuous research into the new emergent factors contributing to obesity is needed.

Effect of tranexamic acid on blood loss reduction in patients undergoing orthognathic surgery under hypotensive anesthesia: a single-center, retrospective, observational study

  • Objectives: Orthognathic surgery is a surgical procedure performed by intraoral approach with established and safe techniques; however, excessive blood loss has been reported in rare cases. In response, investigative efforts to identify methods to reduce the amount of blood loss have been made. Among such methods, the administration of tranexamic acid was reported to reduce the amount of intraoperative blood loss. However, few studies to date have reported the effect of tranexamic acid in orthognathic surgery under hypotensive anesthesia. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of the administration of tranexamic acid on intraoperative blood loss in patients undergoing bimaxillary (maxillary and mandibular) orthognathic surgery under hypotensive anesthesia. Patients and Methods: A total of 156 patients (mean age, 27.0±10.8 years) who underwent bimaxillary orthognathic surgery under hypotensive anesthesia performed by the same surgeon between June 2013 and February 2022 were included in this study. The following data were collected from the medical records of each patient: background factors (age, sex, and body mass index), use of tranexamic acid, surgical procedures, previous medical history, duration of surgery, American Society of Anesthesiology physical status findings before surgery, intraoperative blood loss as a primary outcome, in-out balance, and blood test results. Descriptive statistics were calculated for statistical analysis, and a t-test and the chi-squared test were used for between-group comparisons. Group comparisons were performed after 1:1 propensity score matching to adjust for confounding factors. Statistical significance was set at P<0.05. Results: Comparison between the groups based on the use of tranexamic acid revealed a significant difference in operation time. Propensity score matching analysis revealed that intraoperative blood loss was significantly lower in the tranexamic acid group. Conclusion: The administration of tranexamic acid was effective in reducing intraoperative blood loss in patients undergoing bimaxillary orthognathic surgery under hypotensive anesthesia.

만성 뇌졸중 환자의 시간에 따른 삼킴 기능 변화 (Dysphagia and Oral Function in Chronic Stoke Patient: 3 Months Follow up Study)

  • 본 연구는 2011년 1월 1일부터 2012년 12월 31일까지 대학 병원에 입원 또는 재원중인 만성 뇌졸중 환자를 대상으로 이들의 삼킴 장애 양상이 시간에 따라 변화하는지를 비교하고자 하였다. 대상자는 맨 삼킴 능력 평가(Mann Assessment Swallowing Ability)에 의해 178점 이하의 점수를 보인 삼킴 장애 환자들로 이 기간 동안 최소 2회 이상의 비디오투시조영 삼킴 검사(videofluroscopic swallowing examination)를 수행한 환자 10명 이었다. 또한 이들의 삼킴 문제를 비교하기 위해 나이와 성별을 고려한 정상 성인 8명이 대조군으로 참여하였다. 시간에 따른 삼킴 장애 및 삼킴 기능을 비교하기 위해 만성 뇌졸중 환자의 구강통과시간, 인두통과시간, 후두폐쇄유발시간, 바륨 삼킴 검사(Modified Barium Swallowing Impairment Profile: $MBSImP^{TM(c)}$) 및 기능적 구강 섭취 척도(Functional Oral Intake Scale: FOIS)를 평가하였다. 삼킴 평가는 입원 후 일주일 이내에 이루어졌으며 기초선 평가 후 3 개월이 지난 뒤 재검사되었다. 연구 결과, 기초선 평가에서 만성 뇌졸중 환자는 정상인보다 지연된 삼킴 시간을 보였다(구강통과시간; z=-3.60, p<0.001, 인두통과시간; z=-2.77, p=0.004, 후두반응시간; z=-3.56, p<0.001). 만성 뇌졸중 환자군은 3개월 이후에도 비슷한 수준의 삼킴 시간을 보여 삼킴 효율성은 개선되지 않았음을 확인하였다. 반면, $MBSImP^{TM(c)}$와 FOIS 결과에서 구강 단계의 삼킴 기능과 구강 섭취 능력이 두 시점에 따라 통계적으로 유의한 차이가 있었다($MBSImP^{TM(c)}$; z=-2.02, p=0.04, FOIS; z=-2.27, p=0.02). 3개월 후에 뇌졸중 환자는 구강 기능 및 구강 섭취 능력이 호전된 것으로 나타났으며 이는 일부 삼킴 기능이 회복되었기 때문으로 해석된다. 본 연구는 만성 뇌졸중 환자의 삼킴 장애 양상을 규명하고 호전 가능성을 살펴보았다는 점에서 의의가 있으며 만성 뇌졸중 환자의 삼킴 문제를 관리하고 계획하는 기초 자료를 수립하였다.

잎들깨 수경재배에서 배지 종류에 따른 식물 생육 및 수량의 반응 (Growth and Yield Response of Perilla Plants Grown under Different Substrates in Hydroponic System)

  • 잎들깨 수경재배 시 적합한 고형배지를 선발하기 위하여 본 연구를 수행하였다. '남천'과 '소미랑' 2품종에 대해 코이어(chip:dust = 5:5), 펄라이트, 입상 암면, 원예용 상토(cocopeat: peatmoss:vermiculite:perlite:zeolite = 50:25:10:10:5) 등 4종의 배지에 따른 배지의 물리화학적 특성 및 생육반응을 분석하였다. 배지 간의 EC와 pH의 차이는 보이지 않았으나, 용기용수량 측정 결과 입상 암면이 가장 높고 원예용 상토와 코이어가 적절한 수준을 유지하였다. 배지의 기상률은 코이어와 펄라이트가 30% 이상으로 높은 경향을 보였으며 가비중은 코이어 배지를 제외한 모든 배지가 기준을 충족하였다. 잎의 크기는 품종 간에 배지에 따른 반응이 다르게 나타났는데 '남천' 품종은 원예용 상토에서 엽장, 엽폭이 가장 컸고 '소미랑'의 경우 코이어에서 재배하였을 때 가장 컸다. 엽중은 두 품종 모두 원예용 상토에서 재배한 것이 가장 높았고, 코이어와 펄라이트에서 재배한 것이 상대적으로 낮았다. 총 생산량을 조사한 결과 수량이 높은 원예용 상토 및 입상 암면과 수량이 낮은 코이어, 펄라이트로 두 그룹으로 구분되는 형태를 보였으며 그룹 간에 최대 28% 차이를 보였다. 따라서 근권에 충분한 수분 공급이 필요한 잎들깨를 수경재배하기 위해서는 보수력이 좋은 원예용 상토와 입상 암면을 이용하는 것이 적합할 것으로 판단한다.

경기만 및 한강하구 연안 물리적 모형의 불확실성 분석 (Uncertainty Analysis of a Coastal Physical Model in Gyeonggi Bay and Han River Estuary)

  • 본 연구에서는 경기만과 한강하구 연안에 대하여 물리학적인 특성을 파악하고, 대표적인 인자인 조위에 대한 불확실성을 분석하기 위해 MIKE 21의 HD (HyDrodynamics only)를 이용하였다. 기준 실험을 포함하여 하천유량 4가지, 격자 간격 2가지, 경계조건 4가지 그리고 수심 4가지 등 총 15개의 경우에 대해 실험을 수행하였다. 평균조차의 편차에 대한 RMSD(제곱평균제곱근편차, root mean square deviation)를 추정하였다. RMSD는 영국의 자연환경조사회(NERC, 1975)가 도입한 이래로 수문자료 적합도 분석을 위해 자주 사용되어 왔으며 가장 작은 값이 모형에 적합한 것이다. 평균조차 RMSD가 염하수로에서 0.1148로 가장 크며 연평도에서 0.0400으로 가장 작게 산출되었다. 결과적으로 조석(평균조차)은 외해보다 개발이 집중되는 연안과 하구역에서 불확실성이 큰 것으로 판단 할 수 있다. 또한 원수심을 10% 하향조정한 경우 평균조차 RMSD가 0.1540으로 가장 크게 산출되었으며, RMSD의 비교결과는 격자간격($0.0759{\sim}0.0851$), 경계조건($0.0376{\sim}0.0788$) 및 하천유량배분($0.0318{\sim}0.0471$)보다는 수심($0.0478{\sim}0.1540$)의 영향이 가장 큰 것으로 해석 가능하다.

Growth and yield responses of rice varieties to various soil water deficit conditions under different soil types

  • To avoid drought stress under rainfed upland conditions, it is important for rice to efficiently utilize water at shallow soil layers supplied by rainfall, and access to water retained in deer soil layers. The root developmental characteristics of rice, which play important role in the adaptability to drought conditions, vary depending on the variety. Moreover, water availability for plant differs depending on the soil types that have different physical properties such as water holding capacity, permeability, capillary force, penetration resistance, etc. In this study, we evaluated growth and yield responses of rice varieties to various soil water deficit conditions under three different soil types. The experiment was conducted in a plastic greenhouse at the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization-Mwea from October 2016 to January 2017. Two upland varieties (NERICA 1 and 4) and one lowland variety (Komboka) were grown in handmade PVC pots (15.2 cm diameter and 85.0 cm height) filled with three different types of soil collected from major rice-growing areas of the country, namely black cotton (BC), red clay (RC), and sandy clay (SC). Three watering methods, 1) supplying water only from the soil surface (W1), 2) supplying water only from the bottom of the pots (W2), and 3) supplying water both from the soil surface and the bottom of pots (W3), were imposed from 40 days after sowing to maturity. Soil water content (SWC) at 20, 40, and 60 cm depths was measured regularly. At the harvesting stage, aboveground and root samples were collected to determine total dry weight (TDW), grain yield, and root length at 0-20, 20-40, 40-60, and 60-80 cm soil layers. Irrespective of the watering methods, the greatest root development was obtained in RC, while that in BC was less than other two soils. In BC, the degree of yield reduction under W1 was less than that in RC and SC, which could be attributed to the higher water holding capacity of BC. In RC, the growth and yield reduction observed in all varieties under W1 was attributed to the severe drought stress. On the other hand, under W2, SWC at the shallow soil depth in RC was maintained because of its higher capillary force compared with BC and SC. As the result, growths and yields in RC were not suppressed under W2. In SC, deep root development was not promoted by W2 irrespective of the varieties, which resulted in significant yield losses. Under W1, the rice growth and yield in SC was decreased although shallow root development was enhanced, and the stomatal conductance was maintained higher than RC. It was suspected that W1 caused nutrients leaching in SC because of its higher permeability. Under rainfed conditions, growth and yield of rice can be strongly affected by soil types because dynamics of soil water conditions change according to soil physical properties.

외식 소비동기가 레스토랑 선택속성 중요도에 미치는 영향: 패션 프리미엄 아울렛을 중심으로 (Motivations of Selecting Restaurants for Eating-out: Focus on Fashion Premium Outlets)

  • Purpose - This research examined the effect of hedonic and utilitarian eating-out motivations on the evaluation of restaurant selection attributes in a fashion premium outlet. Additionally, the influence of experimental and functional attributes on customers' preference for hedonic eating-out motives and utilitarian eating-out motives, and variation of moderating effects through the gender was examined. Research design, data, and methodology - A survey was conducted to verify the established research hypothesis. The questionnaire items for the research were modified to fit the situation of the present study. In order to elaborate the questionnaire, the literature of the previous researchers was reviewed and supplemented. The survey conducted 207 online questionnaires for consumers who have visited domestic fashion premium outlets from July 4, 2017 to July 27, 2017. A total of 207 questionnaires were collected, and a total of 206 questionnaires were used for the empirical analysis after excluding one inappropriate response. In order to verify the reliability and validity of the measured variables, exploratory factor analysis and reliability analysis were performed using SPSS 20.0. Next, the structural equation model (SEM) statistical method was used to test the hypotheses of the study. Results - Hedonic motivation had more influence on experimental attribute importance than the functional attribute importance of the restaurant. However, this result was different depending on the gender. The effects of hedonic motives on empirical attributes were more influenced by female groups, and when influencing functional attributes, male groups were more influenced. However, it was statistically significant (p <0.05) in the female group only when the hedonic eating out motives influenced empirical attributes. Conclusions - This study analyzed the effect of eating-out motivation on the restaurant preference attributes and suggested practical implications. First, customers with hedonic eating-out motivations were evaluating experiential attributes to be more important than functional attributes. Second, for customers who are motivated to use practical eating-out habits, companies should provide services that meet practical and economic needs. In particular, female customers visiting restaurants need differentiated marketing strategies that make them feel new experiences rather than practical ones. In addition, it is necessary to study more complex and integrated studies which will influence restaurant selection attributes of premium outlets customers by adding various eating out motives and selection attributes.
