  • In this paper, a new and simplified method is presented in which the natural frequencies of the uniform and non-uniform beams are calculated through simple mathematical relationships. The various vibration problems such as: Rayleigh beam under variable axial force, axial vibration of a bar with and without end discrete spring, torsional vibration of a bar with an attached mass moment of inertia, flexural vibration of the beam with laterally distributed elastic springs and also flexural vibration of the beam with effects of viscose damping are investigated. The governing differential equations are first obtained and then; according to a harmonic vibration, are converted into single variable equations in terms of location. Through repetitive integrations, the governing equations are converted into weak form integral equations. The mode shape functions of the vibration are approximated using a power series. Substitution of the power series into the integral equations results in a system of linear algebraic equations. The natural frequencies are determined by calculation of a non-trivial solution for system of equations. The efficiency and convergence rate of the current approach are investigated through comparison of the numerical results obtained with those obtained from other published references and results of available finite element software.

  • The rotating components such as turbine rotors in service are generally subjected to multiaxial cyclic loading conditions. The prediction of fatigue lift for turbine rotor components under complex multiaxial loading conditions is very important to prevent the fatigue failures in service. In this paper, axial and torsional low cycle fatigue tests were preformed for 3.5NiCrMo steels serviced low pressure turbine rotor of nuclear power plant. Several methods to predict biaxial fatigue life such as Tresca, von Mises and Brown & Miller's critical plane approach were evaluated to correlate the experimental results for serviced NiCrMoV steel. The fracture mode and fatigue characteristics of NiCrMoV steel were discussed based on the results of fatigue tests performed under the axial and torsional test conditions. In particular, the Brown and Miller's critical plane approach was found to best correlate the experimental data with predictions being within a factor of 2.

  • The characteristics of the torsional systems are generally examined with the nonlinearities such as the several staged clutch damper springs, gear backlashes and drag torques. Generally speaking, the system's characteristics can be found out by the eigensolutions which can show the system natural frequencies and the mode shapes. However, these factors can not give the complete solutions to avoid the noise and vibration problems related to the nonlinear effects. Therefore, several assumptions should be made for solving the real physical system problems under the linear analysis which can reflect the nonlinear effects in the torsional system. This means that the several modified linear factors such as the modified clutch damper spring constants can be used to examine and avoid the natural frequency zones related to the noise and vibration problems. Under the linear analysis with the assumed and modified values, the system can be investigated with the more reliable ways for the realistic phenomena.

  • The diesel engine is often a serious excitation source in ships. Both the varying cylinder gas forces and the reciprocating and rotating mass forces associated with the crank and the connecting rod mechanism produce ample possibilities for excitation of the engine structure itself, the shafting, the surrounding substructures as well as the hull girder. This paper presents a guide for optimization of excitation forces produced by the marine propulsion 2-stroke diesel engine. The computational program for predicting the excitation forces is developed and applied to 2-stroke in-line engines. The object function is defined as the work done by every cylinder excitation force which is related to the mode shape of the diesel engine system, especially in the torsional vibration of the shafting. As a practical application of the presented method, the crank angle of 7 cylinder 2-stroke engine is optimized to reduce torsional vibration stresses on the shafting. Compared with the regular firing angle, about 60% of the 4th order torsional vibratory stress on the propeller shaft can be reduced by optimizing the crank angle irregularly. The usefulness of the presented optimization method is confirmed by the measurements.

  • In this paper, the natural frequency of a cracked cantilever L-beams with a coupled bending and torsional vibrations is investigate by theory and experiment. In addition, a method for detection of crack in a cantilever L-beams is presented based on natural frequency measurements. The governing differential equations of a cracked L-beam are derived via Hamilton's principle. The two coupled governing differential equations are reduced to one sixth order ordinary differential equation in terms of the flexural displacement. Futher, the dynamic transfer matrix method is used for calculation of a exact natural frequencies of L-beams. The crack is assumed to be in the first mode of fracture and to be always opened during vibrations. In this study, the differences between the actual and predicted positions and sizes of crack are less than about 10 % and 39.5 % respectively.

  • A propulsion and lift shafting system in an air cushion vehicle is flexible multi-elements system which consists of two aeroderivative gas turbines with own bevel gears, four stage lift fan reduction gear, two stage propulsion reduction gear air propellers and high capacity of lifting fans. In addition, the system includes the multi-branched shafting with multi-gas turbine engines and thin walled shaft with flexible coupling. Such a branched shafting system has very intricate vibrating characteristics and especially, the thin walled shaft with flexible couplings can lower the torsional natural frequencies of shafting system to the extent that causes a resonance in the range of operating revolution. In this study, to evaluate vibrational characteristics some analytical methods for the propulsion and lift shafting system are studied. The analysis, including natural frequencies and mode shapes, for five operation cases of the system is conducted using ANSYS code with a equivalent mass-elastic model.

  • This paper describes the analysis of dynamic characteristics and prediction of the stiffness for the joint between structural members. In the process of deriving the governing equations, the stiffness values responsible for the moment and shear force were modelled by using linear and torsional springs in the middle of a clamped-clamped beam. The sensitivities of the natural frequency and modal assurance criterion were investigated as a function of the dimensionless linear and torsional spring stiffness. The reliability of the predictions for the linear and torsional stiffness values was verified by the inverse computations of the stiffness matrix. The predictive and exact theoretical stiffness values were compared for the stiffness element in the finite element formulation, and their results show an excellent correlation. It is strongly anticipated that although the proposed methodology is currently limited to the analytical utilization, it will provide a useful tool to estimate unknown joint stiffness values based on the experimental natural frequency and mode shape.

  • The present paper studies the influence of the inhomogeneous initial stresses in the bi-layered hollow cylinder and it is assumed that these stresses are caused by the hydrostatic pressures acting on the interior and outer free surfaces of the cylinder. The study is made by utilizing the version of the three-dimensional linearized theory of elastic waves in bodies with initial stresses for which the initial stress-strain state in bodies is determined within the scope of the classical linear theory of elasticity. For the solution to the corresponding eigenvalue problem, the discrete-analytical method is employed. Numerical results are presented and analyzed for concrete selected pairs of materials. According to these results and their analyses, it is established that, unlike homogeneous initial stresses, the influence of the inhomogeneous initial stresses on the torsional wave dispersion has not only quantitative but also qualitative character. For instance, in particular, it is established that as a result of the initial stresses caused by the hydrostatic pressure acting in the interior free surface of the cylinder, the cut-off frequency appears for the fundamental dispersive mode and the values of this frequency increase with the intensity of this pressure.
