  • A general geometrically non-linear model for lateral-torsional buckling of thick and thin-walled FGM box beams is presented. In this model primary and secondary torsional warping and shear effects are taken into account. The coupled equilibrium equations obtained from Galerkin's method are derived and the corresponding tangent matrix is used to compute the critical moments. General expression is derived for the lateral-torsional buckling load of unshearable FGM beams. The results are validated by comparison with a 3D finite element simulation using the code ABAQUS. The influences of the geometrical characteristics and the shear effects on the buckling loads are demonstrated through several case studies.

  • A container ship, due to wide hatch openings, has characteristics of poor torsional rigidity, strong coupling of horizontal-torsional modes and significant discontinuity in the longitudinal variation of hull sections. In the mathematical formulation of the problem the hull is modeled as a beam and the transfer matrix method is utilized. The cross decks between cargo hatch opening are separated from the main hull and regarded as equivalent springs restraining torsion of hull. The effect of shear deformation of ship-side plating on torsion is taken into account in addition to St. Venant's and bending torsional rigidities. Compatibility requirements at cross section discontinuity are approximately considered. Developing the practical calculation procedure and the computer programs for application to an actual ship, some parametric studies on modeling methods of the cross deck, the compatibility condition, added-mass center etc. are out for the purpose of comparison.

  • There have been many attempts to make kart chassis domestically to lower the price of complete kart. However nobody made a successful chassis due to the lack of understanding the characteristics of kart chassis frame. In this work, a baseline chassis frame under the bending and torsional load is studied. Design target is that the baseline chassis frame is quite adequate not only for the beginners but also for the beginning racers. Results from the analysis are used as a guide to design or modify the baseline chassis with the goal of proper torsional stiffness. Minimum increase in weight is being forced. As a result, the baseline chassis frame was designed, made, and tested. Based on the design results, complete karts are being manufactured by the small 1 size domestic company and these karts are being sold and run in the market.

  • The influence of torsional rigidity of hinged flexible appendage on the linear dynamics of flexible spacecrafts with liquid on board was analyzed by considering the spacecraft's main body as a rigid tank, its flexible appendages as two elastically supported elastic beams, and the onboard liquid as an ideal liquid. The meniscus of the liquid free surface due to surface tension was considered. Using the Lagrangian of the spacecraft's main body (rigid tank), onboard liquid, and two beams (flexible appendages) in addition to assuming the system moved symmetrically, the coupled system frequency equations were obtained by applying the Rayleigh-Ritz method. The influence of the torsional rigidity of the flexible appendages on the spacecraft's coupled vibration characteristics was primary focus of investigation. It was found that coupled vibration modes especially that of appendage considerably changed with torsion spring parameter ${\kappa}_t$ of the flexible appendage. In addition, variation of the main body displacement with system parameters was investigated.

  • Vibro-impacts in manual transmissions result due to several nonlinearities such as multi-staged clutch characteristics and gear backlashes. For the sake of understanding the torsional system, one specific manual transmission with front engine and front wheel drive configuration is investigated with a linear model under the several assumptions substituting the nonlinear factors. First, this system is examined with the mathematical approaches by expressing the governing equations to find out the torsional motions. Second, this system is analyzed using the linear model in order to understand its modal and frequency response characteristics using eigensolution method and the FRF(Frequency Responses Function) analysis. Third, with the given results from the eigensolutions, several mode shapes are investigated related to the torsional motion characteristics. Fourth, the system characteristics with the FRFs are studied with the basic approach, with which the several key parameters will be suggested based upon the results in the further studies.

  • The dynamic characteristics of west coast sand were investigated in order to evaluate the design properties of the offshore wind turbine foundations to be constructed in the West Sea. Torsional shear tests were performed at different confining pressures and densities on specimens constituted by the dry fluviation method. The strain-dependent shear modulus and damping curves were obtained, together with modulus degradation curves. The results show that the confining pressure is more influential on the dynamic characteristics of the sand than the density. It was also found that the dynamic curves from this study were similar to those proposed by others. The modulus degradation ratio $G/G_{1st}$ varies slightly at a small strain level, but increases significantly once beyond the intermediate strain level.

  • Deformational characteristics of soils, often expressed in terms of shear modulus and material damping ratios, are important parameters in the design of soil-structure systems subjected to cyclic and dynamic loadings. In this paper, deformational characteristics of dry sand at small to intermediate strains were investigated using resonant column/torsional shear(RC 175) apparatus. Both resonant column(dynamic) and torsional shear (cyclic) tests were performed in a sequential series on the same specimen. With the modification of motion monitoring system, the elastic zone, where the stress strain relationship is independent of loading cycles and strain amplitude, was veri tied and hysteretic damping was found even in this zone. At strains above cyclic threshold, shear modulus increases and damping ratio decreases with increasing number of loading cycles. Moduli and damping ratios of dry sand are independent of loading frequency and values obtained from pseudostatic torsional shear tests are Identical with the values from the dynamic resonant column test, provided the effect of number of loading cycles is considered in the conlparison. Therefore, deformational characteristics determined by RC/TS tests may be applied in both dynamic and static analyses of soil-structure systems.

  • In this crankshaft of marine diesel engines the exciting torques are produced by gas pressure and reciprocating masses. These torques are periodically changing and are extremely out of balance. To calculate the torsional vibrations of propulsion shafting caused by unbalanced torque the torque harmonics are utilized. Until now to calculate the torsional vibrations of propulsion shafting. the torque harmonics have been supplied by the engine maker. When the torque harmonics of an engine are not available the torque harmonics of a similar engine type had to be used. However such data is not suitable for the reliable calculations of torsional vibrations. In this paper the combustion characteristics of marine diesel engines including $\rho{-}\upsilon$ diagram are investigated and the torque harmonics based on these are theoretically calculated. reliability of the calculations is confirmed by comparing them with those of an engine maker. This study should prove useful for the calculations of torsional vibrations for diesel engine propulsion shafting. particularly for 4-stroke engines whose torque harmonics are difficult to obtain directly from the engine and not ordinarily supplied by the engine maker.

  • Torsional characteristics of nonuniform circular waveguides were studied experimentally by using an in-plane laser vibrometer. The circumferential displacement along the axis of a rod was measured as a response of the torsional oscillation excited at one end of the rod. The experimental results obtained for a stepped circular rod and a conically-tapered rod were compared with theoretical predictions. The results of this paper show the possibility of using the in-plane laser vibrometer for the measurement of torsional vibrations.
