Analysis of Torsional Natural Viibration Characteristics of Rotors (회전체의 비틀림 고유진동 해석)

  • A method to estimate the torsional critical speed for practical rotors has been developed in this study. First, the rotor with a uniform shaft segment is modeled for undamped torsional motion analysis, while satisfying all the boundary conditions. This eventually generates governing equations for the torsional critical speeds of the system. The set of governing equations has the form of a sparse and banded matrix. The elements of banded matrix can be arranged in partitions, which correspond to the specific boundary of the rotor. This permits an automatic generation of the system matrix using a computer. In order to calculate the determinant generated by the simultaneous equations, which leads to the torsional critical speed, a recurring numerical algorithm for a (3*4) sub-matrix has been used. This numerical algorithm practically examines successive (3*4) sub-matrix, one at a time, instead of treating a huge matrix. The output of the program provides the mode shapes with continuous curves. The method has been implemented to three rotors given as examples : a simple rotor, Prohl's rotor, and Macmillan rotor.

A Study on the Forced Torsional Vibration of Engines Shafting Systems with Non-linear Elastic Couplings (비선형 탄성커플링을 갖는 기관축계의 비틀림강제진동에 관한 연구)

  • Marine reduction gears are usually used to increase the propulsion efficiency of propellers for ships powered by medium and small sized high speed diesel engines. Most of shaft systems adopt flexible couplings to absorb the transmitted vibratory torque from the engines to the reduction gears and to prevent the chattering phenomenon of reduction gears. However some elastic couplings show non-linear characteristics due to the variable torque transmitted from the main engines and the change of ambient temperature. In this study dynamic characteristics of flexible couplings sare investigated and their effects upon various vibratory conditions of propulsion systems are clarified. A calculation program of torsional vibration for the propulsion systems are clarified. A calculation program of Results of the program developed are compared with ones of the existing linear method and propulsion systems with the elastic couplings the transfer matrix method is adopted which is found to give satisfied results.

Dynamic System Analysis of Machine Tool Spindles with Magnet Coupling

  • In this study, basic concepts of magnet were introduced, and dynamic characteristics of magnet coupling were explored. Based on these characteristics, it was proposed how to analyze transverse and torsional vibrations of a spindle system with magnet coupling. Proposed theoretical approaches were applied to a precision power transmission system machined for this study, and the transverse and torsional vibrations were simulated. The force on magnet coupling was shown as a form of nonlinear function of the gap and the eccentricity. Also, the form of torque transmitted by magnet coupling was considered as a sinusoidal function. Main spindle connected to a coupling of a follower part was assumed to be a rigid body. Nonlinear partial differential equation was derived to be as a function of angular displacement. By using the equation, torsional vibration analysis of a spindle system with magnet coupling was performed. Free and forced vibration analyses of a spindle system with magnetic coupling were explored by using FEM.

  • In the previous paper, the discussion has been made about theoritical estimation of Load-Deformation Response for reinforced concrete torsional members in the over-all load region. It is the purpose of this investigation to introduce pure torsional testing method, to discuss experimentaly the effects that the change of the wall thickness and the reinforcement ratio contribute to the torsional strength and the crack characteristics of reinforced concrete members.

  • During the last decade, engine makers have developed new types or increasing power rate engines to enlarge theirs marketing shear in two stroke, low-speed diesel engines. As the results, these engines have increased the additional stresses due to torsional vibration more than old model engines. The torsional vibration dampers are necessary in order to reduce heigher additional stresses of intermediate and crank shaft in these engine. In this paper, the optimum designing of Geislinger type torsional Damper has been carried out, based on the theoretical conception. The dynamic characteristics and performance fo dampers are estimated by the measuring results obtained with the monitoring system of dampers and additional stresses of propulsion shafts.

  • The vibrational characteristics of Langevin-type piezoelectric torsional transducers, which consist of a couple of piezoelectric discs and a couple of elastic blocks, have been studied theoretically and experimentally in this paper. The differential equations of piezoelectric torsional motion have been derived in terms of the circumferential displacement and the electric potential. Solutions of the boundary-value problem have yielded the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the transducers. The theoretical solutions have been verified by comparing the numerical results with experimental ones.

  • As for marine propulsion shafting system using 4 stroke diesel engine, it is common to apply reduction gear box between diesel engine and shafting with a view of increasing mechanical efficiency, which inevitably require elastic coupling due to avoid chattering and hammering inside of gear box. In this study, optimum method of rectifying propulsion shafting system in case of 750ton fishing vessel specially in a view of torsional vibration, is theoretically studied. After exchange of diesel engine and gear box, analysis result of torsional vibration get worse and so some countermeasure are needed. The elastic coupling is modified from present block type rubber coupling showing relatively high torsional stiffness to rubber coupling with two series elements directly connected. The vibration measurement using two laser torsion meters was done during sea trial, whose results are compared to those of calculation and verified.

  • Turbine-generator torsional response is caused by interaction between electrical transient air-gap torque and mechanical characteristics of turbine-generator shafts. If torsional shaft torque exceeds a certain threshold, the loss of fatigue life may occur and, in the end, it is possible to happen permanent shaft failure. Therefore, it is required to understand the torsional response for reliable operation and protection of turbine-generator shaft system. In this paper, we introduced multi-mass modeling method of turbine-generator shaft system using mechanical-electrical analogy and state-space equation to verify the transient torsional response based on ElectroMagnetic Transient Program (EMTP). These simple realization methods for turbine-generator shaft torsional response could be helpful to understand torsional interaction phenomena and develop the transient torque reduction countermeasures for turbine-generator shaft system.

Process Analysis and Test for Manufacturing the Sleeve Spring Type-Torsional Vibration Damper (슬리브 스프링 형식 비틀림 진동감쇠기 제조를 위한 공정해석 및 시험)

  • In diesel engines, it is inevitable that the torsional vibration is produced by the fluctuation of engine torque. Therefore, it is necessary to establish preventive measures to diminish the torsional vibration. The sleeve spring type damper is one of the preventive measures for reducing the torsional vibration. In this study, the closed form equations to predict the spring constant of a sleeve spring and the torsional characteristics of the torsional vibration damper are proposed to calculate stiffness of the damper and verified their availability through the finite element analysis and experiments. And the stability of the sleeve spring torsional vibration damper is verified by analyzing the inner star and outer star, which are the core parts of the damper, and 2-roll bending process is proposed to manufacture sleeve spring. The program to calculate the initial radius including spring-back effect is developed, and the FEA method to analyze elasto-plastic problem was verified through analysis of 90$^{\circ}$bending process. The results of the analysis are in good agreements with those of the experiments. The newly proposed method can be used as an advanced technique that remarkably curtails cost of production and replaces the conventional forming.
