In this paper, a dynamic model for the rotor shaft-coupling-blade system is developed. The blades are attached to a disk and driven by an electric motor shaft which is flexible in torsion. We assumed that the shaft torsional flexibility is lumped in the flexible coupling which is usually adopted in rotor systems. The Lagrangian approach with the small deformation theory for both blade-bending and shaft-torsional deformations is employed for developing the equation of the motion. The assumed modes method is used for estimating the blade transverse deflection. The numerical results highlight the effects of both structural damping of the system and the torsional stiffness of the flexible coupling to the dynamic response of the blade. The results showed strong coupling between the blade bending and shaft torsional vibrations in the form of inertial nonlinearif, stiffness hardening and softening.
The structures distorted by welding have to be corrected. Since the correcting work needs a lot of costs and time, it is very important to minimize the buckling distortion due to welding of thin plate structure. Therefore the aim of this study is to investigate the effect of single bead on plate welding and fillet welding on the buckling distortion. In the single bead on plate welding, it was found that the welding speed and welding sequence were the most dominant factors on distortion. In the fillet welding, there were four typical buckling modes observed, and the welding sequence was the most influential factor on the buckling distortion. However typical distortion measuring method is not considered for the distortion correcting process costs of each buckling modes, therefore, in this study, the measuring method is developed to classify the buckling modes for torsion of specimen and buckling distortion depend on nodal point for the bead on plate welding specimen and fillet welds.

A fundamental structural design consideration for a vehicle system is the overall vibration characteristics in bending and torsion. Vibration characteristics of such vehicle system are mainly influenced by the static and dynamic stiffness of the vehicle body structure and also by the material and physical properties of the components attached to the vehicle body structure. In this paper, modeling techniques for the vehicle components are presented and the flexibility and mass effects of the components for the vibration characteristics of the vehicle are investigated. The $1^{st}$ torsional frequency is increased by attaching windshields to the B.I.W. (body-in-white), but the $1^{st}$ bending frequency is decreased by the mass effect. And also, the natural frequencies of the vehicle are large decreased by attaching bumpers, seats, doors, trunk-lid etc. But, suspension system rarely affects the natural frequencies of the vehicle. The study shows thai the dynamic characteristics of the vehicle system can be effectively predicted in the initial design stage.
Dynamic response of a three span continuous bridge has been determined by full scale experiments on the bridge. In the experiments, a heavy vehicle was driven across the bridge at different speeds and along different lanes of travel and the strains were recorded at different locations. The bridge was made of reinforced concrete and was asymmetric in plan and in elevation. Frequencies and modes of vibration excited by the vehicle were determined. The dependence of the dynamic amplification on bridge location and vehicle speed was investigated and dynamic amplifications up to 1.5 were recorded, which was higher than values predicted by bridge design codes. It was evident that when this asymmetric bridge was loaded by an asymmetric forcing function, higher modes, which are lateral and/or torsional in nature, were excited. Dynamic modulus of elasticity and the support stiffness influenced the natural frequencies of the bridge, which in turn influenced the dynamic amplifications. Larger than anticipated dynamic amplification factors and the excitation of lateral and/or torsional modes should be of interest and concern to bridge engineers.

This paper optimizes the optical flying head(OFH) suspension using the integrated optimization frame, which automatically integrates the analysis with the optimization and effectively implements the repetitive works between them. The problem formulation for the optimization is suggested to improve the dynamic compliance of OFH and to shift the resonant frequencies caused tracking errors to high frequency domain. Furthermore, the minimization of the effective suspension mass that leads to decrease the so-called 'lift-off' as the disk-head separation acceleration divided by the suspension load is taken into consideration. In particular, this study is carried out the optimal design considering the process of modes tracking through the entire optimization processes. The advanced suspension that reduces the effective mass of the suspension and increases the resonant frequencies of sway and $2^{nd}$ torsion over 10kHz is achieved by using the integrated optimization frame.
Meck Plot is an adapted version of the well-known Southwell method to the case of lateral-torsional buckling, which indeed reflects the physical inter-dependence of lateral flexure (lateral displacement) and torsion (rotation) in the structure. In the recent reported studies, it has been shown experimentally and theoretically that lateral displacement of an I-beam undergoing elastic lateral-distortional mode of buckling is interestingly directly coupled with other various deformation characteristics such as web transverse strain, web longitudinal strain, vertical deflection, and angles of twist of top and bottom flanges, and consequently good results have been obtained as a result of application of the Meck's method on lateral displacement together with each of the aforementioned deformation variables. In this paper, it is demonstrated that even web transverse and longitudinal strains, vertical deflection, and angles of twist of top and bottom flanges of an I-beam undergoing elastic lateral-distortional buckling are two-by-two directly coupled and the application of the Meck Plot on each pair of these deformation variables may still yield reliable predictions for the critical buckling load.
A modified procedure is presented for assessing the seismic response of elastic non-proportionate multistory buildings. This procedure retains the simplicity of the methodology presented by the author in earlier papers, but it presents higher accuracy in buildings composed by very dissimilar types of bents. As a result, not only frequencies and peak values of base resultant forces are determined with higher accuracy, but also the location of the first mode center of rigidity (m1-CR). The closeness of m1-CR with the axis passing through the centers of floor masses (mass axis) implies a reduced rotational response and it is demonstrated that in elastic systemsa practically translational response is obtained when this point lies on the mass axis.Besides, when common types of buildings are detailed as planar structures under a code load, this response is maintained in the inelastic phase of their response as a result of the almost concurrent yielding of all the resisting bents. This property of m1-CR can be used by the practicing engineer as a guideline to form a structural configuration which will sustain minimum rotational response, simply by allocating the resisting elements in such a way that this point lies close to the mass axis. Inelastic multistory building structures, detailed as above, may be regarded as torsionally balanced multistory systems and this is demonstrated in eight story buildings, composed by dissimilar bents, under the ground motions of Kobe 1995 (component KJM000) and Friuli 1976 (component Tolmezzo E-W).
Dynamic behavior of piezoelectric ZnO nanowires is investigated using finite element analyses (FEA) on FE models constructed based on previous experimental observations in which nanowires having aspect ratios of 1:2. 1:31, and 1:57 are obtained during a hydrothermal process. Modal analyses predict that nanowires will vibrate in lateral bending, uniaxial elongation/contraction, and twisting (torsion), respectively, for the three ratios. The natural frequency for each vibration mode varies depending on the aspect ratio, while the frequencies are in a range of 7.233 MHz to 3.393 GHz. Subsequent transient response analysis predicts that the nanowires will behave quasi-statically within the load frequency range below 10 MHz, implying that the ZnO nanowires have application potentials as structural members of electromechanical systems including nano piezoelectric generators and piezoelectric dynamic strain sensors. When an electric pulse signal is simulated, it is predicted that the nanowires will deform in accordance with the electric signal. Once the electric signal is removed, the nanowires exhibit a specific resonance-like vibration, with the frequency synchronized to the signal frequency. These predictions indicate that the nanowires have additional application potential as piezoelectric actuators and resonators.
