  • In this study, aerodynamic drag of a bearingless rotor hub was predicted by computational fluid dynamics methodology using unstructured overset mixed meshes. The calculated results showed that the drag due to pressure forces rather than the viscous drag act as a major factor on both the fuselage and rotor hub, and the drag acting on the torque tube accounted for the largest portion in the hub drag. It was also found the hub drag accounted for 39 ~ 41% of the fuselage drag. Finally, the result confirmed the drag of the designed rotor hub satisfied the requirement of the aerodynamic hub drag by comparing with the drag trend of developed helicopter.

  • The flowfield in a solid rocket motor was simulated at the wall-injection test model, which has a fin-slot grain and submerged nozzle, and visualized by a smoke-wire. The high speed CCD camera captured the visualized images around the nozzle inlet through the grain center port. The vortical tube structure and circumferential flow patterns at the nozzle throat were visualized. The radial momentum transfer caused by the shear-interactions of slot-outlet flow, fin-base flow and grain port flow from upstream worked as the source of these phenomena.

  • One of the most efficient designs of solar trackers for photovoltaic panels is the single-axis tracker, which holds the panels along a torque tube that is driven by a motor at the central section. These trackers have evolved to become extremely slender structures due to mechanical optimization against static load and the need of cost reduction in a very competitive market. Owing to the corresponding decrease in mechanical resistance, some of these trackers have suffered aeroelastic instability even at moderate wind speeds, leading to catastrophic failures. In the present work, an analytical and experimental approach has been developed to study that phenomenon. The analytical study has led to identify the dimensionless parameters that govern the motion of the panel-tracker structure. Also, systematic wind tunnel experiments have been carried out on a 3D aeroelastic scale model. The tests have been successful in reproducing the aeroelastic phenomena arising in real-scale cases and have allowed the identification and a close characterization of the phenomenon. The main results have been the determination of the critical velocity for torsional galloping as a function of tilt angle and a calculation methodology for the optimal sizing of solar tracker shafts.

  • After we designed Bearingless rotor hub system for 7,000lb class helicopter, flexbeam fatigue analysis was conducted for validation of requirement life time 8,000 hours. sectional structural analysis method applying elastic beam model was used. Fatigue analysis for two sections of flexbeam which were expected to weak to fatigue damage from result of static analysis was conducted. Extension, bending and torsion stiffness of flexbeam section shape was calculated using VABS for structure analysis. S-N curve of two composite material which composed flexbeam was generated using wohler equation. Load analysis of bearingless rotor system was conducted using CAMRAD II and load analysis result was applied HELIX/FELIX standard load spectrum to generate bearingless rotor system load spectrum which was used flexbeam fatigue safe life analysis.

  • In this study, the aeroelastic response and stability of bearingless rotors are investigated using a large deflection beam theory. The outboard main blade, flexbeam, and torque tube are all assumed to be an elastic beam undergoing arbitrary large displacements and rotations. The finite element equations of motion obtained from Hamilton's principle. Two-dimensional quasi-steady strip theory is used to evaluate aerodynamic forces. In hover, the modal approach method based on coupled rotating natural modes is used for the stability analysis. In forward flight, the nonlinear periodic blade steady response is obtained by integrating the full finite element equation in time through a coupled trim procedure with a vehicle trim. The results of the full finite element analysis using the large deflection beam theory are compared with those of a previously published modal analysis using the moderate deflection-type beam theory.

  • The characteristics of bearingless main rotor of helicopter are investigated through non-rotating tests and rotating tests. The stiffness and natural frequencies of rotor blades, flexbeam, and torque tube which are core components of baearingless rotor are measured to obtain input material properties for rotor analysis. The functional test on ground for assembly of one hub with damper, snubber, and no blade is carried out to check interfaces between components, kinematics of components, and pitch motion ranges under applied loads including centrifugal load. The 4-bladed bearingless rotor with 5.82m of rotor radius is tested on the whirl tower with rotation plane of 9.65m height. The thrust and power are measured to obtain hover performance and the frequencies and dampings of the rotor are obtained by excitation of cyclic pitch by hydraulic actuators.

  • Recently, ball screws have been used in machine tools, robot parts, and medical instruments. The demand for ball screws of high precision and reduced size is increasing because of the growth of high value-added industries. Three types of ball screws are typically used: deflector type, end-cap type, and tube type. They are also classified from C0 to C9 according to the precision level. A deflector type ball screw can reduce the variation of rotational torque and the size of the nut of the ball screw is minimized. To ensure the reliable design of ball screws, it is important to perform a structural analysis. The purpose of this study is to perform a stability evaluation through analysis of a deflector type miniature ball screw for weapon systems. The analysis is performed through Finite Elements Method (FEM) simulation to predict characteristics such as deformation, stress, and thermal effects. The interference between the shaft and the deflector for smooth rotation are also studied. Based on the results of the analysis, the development of the deflector type miniature ball screw for weapon systems is performed.

  • The use of the scroll compressor in the air conditioning of medium-sized vehicles has increased because of its low torque fluctuation, high energy efficiency and low noise. In addition, the main components of the compressor have been changed from steel to aluminum to reduce its weight, following studies on the constituent materials. The processing precision of the fixed scroll and orbiting involute scroll wrap of the scroll compressor must be below $10{\mu}m$. To ensure this, the surface roughness and contour tolerance are measured. To improve the hardness of the orbiting scrolls using aluminum subjected to anodizing treatment and as the base material, we used a sealing treatment and measured the resulting characteristics. The aluminum materials were made of an Al-Mg-Cu based alloy including small amounts of Ni, Fe, and Zn. The surface roughness was less than $3{\mu}m$ and the processing accuracy was within $10{\mu}m$. Also, the hardness of the nanodiamonds with CNTs used in the sealing treatment was more than 450. This was found to improve the hardness of the material by 50% or more compared to the water sealing treatment and there was little difference between the use of carbon nanotubes and nanodiamonds as sealing materials.
