  • This paper presents a digitally speed sensorless control system for induction motor with direct torque control (DTC). Some drawbacks of the classical DTC are the relatively large torque ripple in a low speed range and notable current pulsation during steady state. They are reflected speed response and increased acoustical noise. In this paper, the DTC quick response are preserved at transient state, while better qualify steady state performance is produced by space vector modulation (SVM). The system are closed loop stator flux and torque observer for wide speed range that inputs are currents and voltages sensing of motor terminal, model reference adaptive control (MRAC) with rotor flux linkages for the speed fuming signal at low speed range, two hysteresis controllers and optimal switching look-up table. Simulation results of the suggest system for the 2.2 [kW] general purposed induction motor are presented and discussed.

  • In this paper, a new 'impedance sensing' method is described. This method overcomes the shortcomings of the impedance sensing method. According to the new method, sensing voltage pulse is applied to the idle phase in the minimum inductance region and the beginning of the increasing inductance region to detect rotor position. The negative torque produced by the sensing voltage pulse can be neglected in the minimum inductance region and the efficiency of SRM is improved. In the minimum inductance region the back electromotive force (EMF) can be neglected. And in the increasing inductance region the EMF opposes the rise of current in the phase, so the position estimation scheme is reliable. Therefore the new 'impedance sensing' method is sufficiently precise even under the high back EMF effect. The adjustment of turn-on angle and turn-off angle is also easy to be realized. The technique is very useful in applications where cost or size is primary concerns, such as electric bicycle drives. Experimental results are presented to verify the proposed method.

  • Gas compressors are mostly driven by motors. It is important to measure the power of motors to evaluate their power efficiency, because the mechanical loads of gas compressors are always varied. In order to measure the power given to the driving motors, the torque should be measured. Manufacturers of compressors usually use the torque data to calculate the compressors qualities such as power consumption, efficiencies and failures. In general, measurements for the shaft torque of the compressors have been based upon contact types, strain gauges. In the cases of larger compressors, the contact type of strain gauges have several disadvantages such as large size and high cost. In this study, a relatively inexpensive and simple torque sensing technique that is not restricted to shaft diameter is introduced using visualization technique. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) has been adopted to complete non-contact torques measurements for rotating motors. In order to compare the performance of the newly constructed torque measurement technique, torque measurement by a transducer based on MEMS technology has been performed simultaneously during experiments.

  • Joint force/torque estimation by inverse dynamics is a traditional tool in biomechanical studies. Conventionally for this, kinematic data of human body is obtained by motion capture cameras, of which the bulkiness and occlusion problem make it hard to capture a broad range of movement. As an alternative, inertial motion sensing using cheap and small inertial sensors has been studied recently. In this research, the performance of inertial motion sensing especially to calculate inverse dynamics is studied. Kinematic data from inertial motion sensors is used to calculate ground reaction force (GRF), which is compared to the force plate readings (ground truth) and additionally to the estimation result from optical method. The GRF estimation result showed high correlation and low normalized RMSE(R=0.93, normalized RMSE<0.02 of body weight), which performed even better than conventional optical method. This result guarantees enough accuracy of inertial motion sensing to be used in inverse dynamics analysis.
