  • In a permanent magnet brushless dc motor, cogging torque is produced by the magnetic attraction between the rotor mounted permanent magnets and the stator teeth. This always produces a pulsating torque ripple resulting in vibration and acoustic noise, which is detrimental to the motor performance. This paper deals with the analytical prediction of cogging torque and the various cogging torque minimization techniques as applied to a permanent magnet brushless dc motor.

  • A new instantaneous torque control technique is presented for a high performance control of a permanent magnet synchronous motor. Using the model reference adaptive system technique, the linkage flux of the motor is estimated and the torque is instantaneously controlled by the proposed torque controller combining with a variable structure control and space vector PWM. The proposed torque control provides the advantage of reducing the torque pulsation caused by the flux harmonics. This control strategy is applied to the high torque PM synchronous motor drives for direct drive systems and is implemented by using a software of the DSP TMS320C30. The experiments are carried out for this system and the results well demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control.

  • This paper proposed a method to reduce torque ripple of double-layer axial flux permanent magnet motor. Torque is generated by interacting between current of stator winding and airgap flux. In the case of slotless axial flux permanent magnet motor, only commutation torque component is significant. Hence, cogging and reluctance torque will not be considered. For this propose, we were supplied differential phase current in each winding and shifted rotor magnet. According to shifted rotor magnet and flux and phase of current were shifted, phase of developed torque in each side is difference. As a result, we could reduce the total torque ripple in motor and obtain minimum torque ripple in the case of 7.5 degree shifting angle between two rotors.

  • The main objective of the research is to Propose an algorithm that to estimate the screwing torque from parameters of DC motor current without using any stain gage and torque cell. The auto screw drive system is divided into two parts, one is the DC motor ind the other is mechanical part in which the friction torque and damping ratio are a function of rotational of spindle electro motive force constant. The torque is estimated from the friction torque. The research is concerned with applying the method to an auto screw drive and the advantages and limitations are also discussed in this paper.

  • Single-phase, brushless DC (BLDC) motors have unequal air-gaps to eliminate the dead-point where the developed torque is zero. Unfortunately, these unequal air-gaps can deteriorate the motor characteristics in the cogging torque. This paper proposes a novel design for a single-phase BLDC motor with an asymmetric notch to solve this problem. In the design method, the asymmetric notches were placed on the stator pole face, which affects the change in permanent magnet shape or the residual flux density of the permanent magnet. Parametric analysis was performed to determine the optimal size and position of the asymmetric notch to reduce the cogging torque. Finite element analysis (FEA) was used to calculate the cogging torque. A more than 28% lower cogging torque compared to the initial model with no notch was achieved.

  • The multi-degrees of freedom surface permanent-magnet motor (Multi-D.O.F. SPM) has several degrees of freedom operations that are defined as the "roll", "yaw", and "pitch". Normally, the torque that is generated to rotate a rotor includes ripples. The analysis of the torque ripples is important for improving motor performance. In terms of the electric analysis, torque ripple occurs as a result of many factors, including the rotor and stator structures, the distribution of the air-gap flux density, and the waveform of the current in the coils. In particular, the torque ripple is an important factor in the stable operation of the Multi-D.O.F. SPM. Therefore, in this work, the torque ripple was analyzed using various types of magnetization for the permanent magnet. An improved model was proposed for the Multi-D.O.F. SPM based on this analysis.

  • Conventional integral-slot design in permanent magnet(PM) motor tends to have a high cogging torque and large end turns, which contribute to copper losses. The fractional-slot design is effective compared to integral-slot design in the cogging torque and electromotive force(EMF) waveform. The effectiveness of fractional slot can be maximized by selecting optimal pole to slot ratio. This paper presents the effect of pole to slot ratio on the cogging torque and EMF waveform in the PM motor with fractional-slot. The effectiveness of the proposed designs has been confirmed by comparing waveform of EMF. cogging torque and torque ripple between conventional and new models.

  • Mutual torque ripple in a brushless DC motor is the main source of acoustic noise, especially fur motor operation with high speed and torque. This paper presents a method to obtain mutual torque ripple to identify acoustic noise source. Mutual torque ripple can be determined by analyzing phase current shape and magnetic circuit with different lead angles. Current shape is determined by state space model of voltage equation with the use of inductance calculated by FEM, and confirmed by experimental results. Mutual torque ripple is also determined by FEM analysis for the calculated current shape. Acoustic noise experiment reveals that mutual torque ripple with different lead angle is one of the main sources for noise generation in a brushless DC motor.

  • This paper deals with a characteristic that varies the number of magnetic pole in permanent magnet (PM) motor in order to reduce energy consumption. The pole changing memory motor (PCMM) can change the number of magnetic poles and produce two types of torque. When the motor operates with eight poles, it produces a magnetic torque at low rotational speeds. When the motor changes to four poles, it produces both magnetic torque and reluctance torque at high speeds. The paper explain the principle and basic characteristics of the motor by using a finite element method magnetic-field analysis, which consists of a PM magnetized by a pulse d-axis current of the armature winding. The results of our experiment show that the proposed motor reduces core loss by 10% and 55% under no-load and load conditions, and doubles the speed range of the motor.

  • As many researchers are relentlessly trying to improve the power generation schemes from the power grid, to meet the constantly increasing electricity demand. In this paper, the results of a finite element analysis are carried out to study on a design optimization of an asymmetric air-gap structure in 3-phase Permanent Magnet Brushless DC Motors. To achieve a high efficiency for a 3-phase PM BLDC motor, the asymmetric air-gap structure is proposed considering the rotation direction of a motor. Generally, a single-phase BLDC motor is applied asymmetric air-gap structure for starting. This is because the asymmetric air-gap structure causes reluctance variation so the motor can utilize reluctance torque toward a rotation direction. In this paper, the asymmetric air-gap is applied to 3-phase BLDC SPM motor so it utilizes reluctance torque with alignment torque. A proposed model is designed by 2-D FE analysis and the results are verified by experimental test.
