Soil erosion is influenced from a variety of factors such as rainfall distribution, soil type, land use, etc. This paper is aimed at analyzing the soil erosion hazard zone in cropland. RUSLE was used for an analysis of soil erosion amount, and for the spatial data of basin, soil erosion amount was calculated by extracting the respect topography space related factors of RUSLE using DEM, Landuse, Soil map as base map. This paper is targeting at the watershed of Gyeongan stream in Gyeonggi-do The result of an analysis of soil erosion amount showed that soil erosion occurred in the order of crop field(1210) planting area, orchard(1220), non-adjusted paddy fields(1120), and adjusted paddy fields(1110), and also the average soil erosion in these planting areas has the most amount in crop field planting area. As a result of analysis on soil erosion hazard zone of farm land by classifying it into 5 classes using the result of that result of analysis on the amount of soil erosion, in case of Class 5 in which the hazard of soil erosion is the highest, approximately 72.5ha that corresponds to 2.4% of the total farm land was decided as erosion hazard zone. For this erosion hazard zone, it was analyzed that dry field crop planting area was 72.4ha and orchard was 0.1ha, and Class 5 hazard zone did not appear in other farming areas. Also, it showed that Class II(1~50ton/ha/yr) area had the most ratio of the entire farm land, i.e., 70.2%, regardless of land use state. According to the result of analysis on soil erosion hazard zone of farm land by classifying it into 5 classes, the Class V has the highest soil erosion hazard, approximately 72.5ha that corresponds to 2.4% of the total farm land was estimated as an erosion hazard zone. This erosion hazard shows 72.4ha in dry field crop planting area, 0.1ha in an orchard, but the highest hazard zone, the Class V was not shown in other farming areas. Also, it showed that Class II area had the most ratio of the entire farm land, i.e., 70.2%, regardless of land use state.

The aim of this study is to analyse the landslide susceptibility and the future hazard in Inje, Korea using probability rainfalls and artificial neural network (ANN) environment based on geographic information system (GIS). Data for rainfall probability, topography, and geology were collected, processed, and compiled in a spatial database using GIS. Deokjeok-ri that had experienced 694 landslides by Typhoon Ewinia in 2006 was selected for analysis and verification. The 50% of landslide data were randomly selected to use as training data while the other 50% being used for verification. The probability of landslides for target years (1 year, 3 years, 10 years, 50 years, and 100 years) was calculated assuming that landslides are triggered by 1-day rainfall of 202 mm or 3-day cumulative rainfalls of 449 mm.

Many urban areas in Korea suffer from repeated flood damage during intensive rainfall due to an increase in impervious areas caused by rapid urbanization and deteriorating sewage systems. A centralized stormwater management system has caused severe flood damage in an area that has proven unable to accommodate recent climate change and a rise in precipitation. Most flooding prevention projects that have been recently implemented focus on increasing drainage system capacity by expanding the size of sewer pipes and adding pumping stations in downstream areas. However, such measures fail to provide sustainable solutions since they cannot solve fundamental problems to reduce surface runoff caused by urbanization across the watershed. A decentralized stormwater management system is needed that can minimize surface runoff and maximize localized retention capacity, while maintaining the existing drainage systems. This study proposes a stormwater management corridor for the flood-prone watershed in the city of Dongducheon. The corridor would connect the upstream, midstream, and downstream zones using various methods for reducing stormwater runoff. The research analyzed surface runoff patterns generated across the watershed using the Modified Rational Method considering the natural topography, land cover, and soil characteristics of each sub-watershed, as well as the urban fabric and land use. The expected effects of the design were verified by the retainable volume of stormwater runoff as based on the design application. The results suggest that an open space network serve as an urban green infrastructure, potentially expanding the functional and scenic values of the landscape. This method is more sustainable and effective than an engineering-based one, and can be applied to sustainable planning and management in flood-prone urban areas.

The retention basin is a river-facility for the flood mitigation by storing the river flow temporarily. The new 3 retention basins are installed in these regions YeoJu, NaJu, YoungWol by the Large River Management Project. In this study, 1D and 2D numerical flow simulation are conducted to evaluate the reduction effect of the peak flood stage for the YeoJu retention basin. HEC-RAS and FLDWAV models are used for 1D simulation with the option of retention basin. CCHE2D model is used for 2D simulation with the same hydrograph used in 1D simulation. It is verified that the peak flood stage is reduced very largely about 0.13 m near the overtopping section of the levee in 1D simulation. It is verified that the peak flood stage is reduced very largely about 0.20 m at the upstream-end of the simulated reach in 2D simulation. 2D simulation for the retention basin is more reasonable because physical characteristics of topography in the model, and also more advantageous for the evaluation of the flow characteristics of the in- and outside of the retention basin on the results of simulation of this study.

The accurate estimation of discharge is very essential as the important factor of river design for the utilization and flood control, hydraulic construction design. The present discharge production is using the stage-discharge relationship curve in the river. The rating curve uses the method by predicting the discharge based on regression analysis using the measured stage and discharge data in a flood season. The method is comparatively convenient and has especially advantages in that it can predict the discharge having the difficulty of observation in a flood season. However, this method has basically room for improvement because the method only uses the relationship between stage and discharge, and doesn't reflect the hydraulic parameters such as hydraulic radius, energy slope, roughness, topography, etc.. Therefore, in this study, discharge was predicted using the convenient calculation method with empirical parameters of the Manning and Chezy equations, which were proposed by Choo et at (2011) in KSCE as a new methodology for estimating discharge in open channel. The proposed method can conveniently estimate empirical parameters in both of Manning and Chezy equations and the discharge is estimated in the open channels. There are proved by using data measured in meandering lab. channel and India canal and the accuracies show about determination coefficient 0.8. Accordingly, this method will be used in actual field if this study is continuously conducted.

Reservoir is an important infrastructure of our society because it can store immense amount of water for various usages - manufacturing, agriculture, drinking, power generation, tourism etc. For maintenance of reservoir, various efforts in administrative and technological aspects are periodically conducted and monitoring the conditions of reservoir bed is the first priority for maintenance of reservoir. To check the conditions of reservoir bed, we measured depth of reservoir by using echo sounder, which is relatively reliable, prior to discharging of stored water and surveyed topography of reservoir by using UAV after discharging of water. Then, we conducted interpolation of measured depth of water by means of inverse distance weighting interpolation, Kriging interpolation, minimum curvature interpolation and radial basis function interpolation and calculated the volume of reservoir for each interpolation method. We compared the calculated volume of reservoir with the volume of water calculated by UAV after discharging of water and found the following results: First, as results of the above processes, we found that the Kriging interpolation was 97% correct in measurement of the volume of reservoir. Second, as results of comparison of differences between topographical areas and interpolated areas after selection of cross section for comparison, Kriging interpolation was found to have the most similar configuration with the topographical configuration by showing the least difference in the area of cross section. Therefore, it is determined that the optimal modeling of reservoir bed with the water depth data measured by echo sounder shall provide basic information for efficient maintenance of reservoir.

In this study the tidal area in Seo han bay, North Korea was detected and extracted by using various satellite images (ASTER, KOMPSAT EOC, Landsat TM/ETM+) and GIS spatial analysis. Especially, the micro-landform was classified through the spectral characteristic of each satellite image and the change of tidal flat size was detected on passing year. For this, the spectral characteristics of eight tidal flat area in Korea, which are called as Seo han bay, Gwang ryang bay, Hae iu bay, Gang hwa bay, A san bay, Garorim bay, Jul po bay and Soon chun bay, were analyzed by using multi band of multi spectral satellite images such as Landsat TM/ETM+. Moreover, the micro-landform tidal flat in Seo han bay, North Korea was extracted by using ISODATA clustering based on the result of spectral characteristic. In addition, in order to detect the change of tidal flat size on passing years, the ancient topography map (1918-1920) was constructed as GIS DB. Also, the tidal flat distribution map based on the temporal satellite images were constructed to detect the tidal flat size for recent years. Through this, the efficient band to classify the micro-landform and detect its boundary was clarified and one possibility of KOMPSAT EOC application could be also introduced by extracting the spatial information of tidal flat efficiently.
The Wangdol-cho area, in the Hupo Bank, plays a very important role in main fishing grounds, leisure tourism and marine environmental researches of the East Sea. We analyzed the detailed bathymetry and classified the seabed characteristics of the Wangdol-cho area, based on seafloor backscattering images and sediment grain size. The Hupo Bank is developed in parallel with the eastern coastal line of Korean peninsula, and the shallowest area (Wangdol-cho) of the Hupo Bank is located along the eastern part of Hupo Port. The Wangdol-cho comprises three summits; north summit, middle summit, and south summit. The middle summit area among the three summits has the most shallow water depth with minimum about 6 m. The north summit shows about 8 m minimum depth and the south summit about 9 m. The bathymetry data around three summits represent undulating seabeds with many scattered underwater reefs and shallow water depth. The area between the underwater reefs, the flat seafloor in the northeastern part of the survey site, and the western steep slope area have relatively coarse sediments such as sandy gravel and gravelly sand. The bathymetry in the western side of the Wangdol-cho shows steep slope seabed, extending to the Hupo Basin. Fine sediments including mud and silty sand occur in the Hupo Basin area of the survey site. The submarine detailed topography and the analysis of the seafloor characteristics of the survey area are expected to contribute to management for marine environmental researches and sustainable use of ecosystems in the Wangdol-cho.

Hotspots are top sites in terms of species diversity as the most threatened and most diverse sites which have been used to select priority areas for reserves. The purpose of this paper is to identify biodiversity hotspots through analyzing nationwide spatial patterns of species richness and rarity of Korean mammals. Four endangered mammals and eleven common mammals were selected as target species. Environmental variables as model input data were consisted of topography, distance, and vegetation structure etc. and Maxent was used to develop species distribution models for target species. Species richness and rarity were used as index of biodiversity. The results of this study were as follows. Firstly, hotspots of species richness for endangered mammals were in high elevation and steep mountain areas. However, species richness for whole mammals were high in low elevation of mountains. Secondly, distribution pattern of species rarity for endangered mammals were similar as richness. However, hotspots of species rarity for whole mammals were a little different from species richness. Species rarity was high in both low and high elevation of mountain areas. This study will provide the useful information for a biodiversity assessment, a habitat conservation, a national ecological network plan, and the management of protected areas.
