  • The Imha watershed is vulnerable to severe erosion due to the topographical characteristics such as mountainous steep slopes. Sediment inflow from upland area has also deteriorated the water quality and caused negative effects on the aquatic ecosystem of the Imha reservoir. The Imha reservoir was affected by sediment-laden density currents during the typhoon 'Maemi' in 2003. The RUSLE model was combined with GIS techniques to analyze the mean annual erosion losses and the soil losses caused by typhoon 'Maemi'. The model is used to evaluate the spatial distribution of soil loss rates under different land uses. The mean annual soil loss rate and soil losses caused by typhoon 'Maemi' were predicted as 3,450 tons/km2/year and 2,920 ton/km2/'Maemi', respectively. The sediment delivery ratio was determined to be about 25% from the mean annual soil loss rate and the surveyed sediment deposits in the Imha reservoir in 1997. The trap efficiency of the Imha reservoir was calculated using the methods of Julien, Brown, Brune, and Churchill and ranges from 96% to 99%.

  • Recently, the water pollution of coastal sea area including harbor, bay and inland sea has been very serious and it causes u\\various environmental impacts. In this study, water flow system of Danghnag Bay, which has the narrow and long topographical characteristics with the narrow bay mouth and its flow is influenced principally by the tidal current, is investigated experimentally and numerically. In order to understand the tidal system of Danghang Bay, harmonic analysis is performed based on measured tidal range and flow velocity. In addition, numerical model for tidal exchange is developed considering conditions of Danghang Bay. Calculated results show good agreement with measurement. Lastly, based on the proposed numerical model, exchange ratio of seawater volume in Danghang Bay is predicted.

  • In this paper the watershed is divided by stream order law of Horton to estimate the runoff with stream order. We use the contour data to extract spatially distributed topographical information like stream channels and networks of sub-basins. A contour model is developed, validated, and adopted to estimate the effective stream order number for the runoff. The results show that the peak discharge which is divided into first river order was close to observed one. The contour model will provide effective informations to plan river works classified by sub-basins for river restoration.

  • Image matching is fundamental process to identify conjugate points on the stereo images. However, standard methods or general solutions for matching problem have not been found yet, in spite of long history. Quality of the matching basically depends on uniqueness of the matching entity and robustness of the algorithm. In this study, conjugate points were extracted by implementing interest operator, then area based matching method was applied to the topographical characteristics of the gray value as the matching entities. The matching entities were utilized based on the concept of the intrinsic image.

  • The benefits of high performance retention systems have been long recognized by the paper maker. The inter-relation between chemical retention and drainage and their effect on paper production efficiency and paper quality is significant. The subject of this paper is a summary of recent studies comparing three microparticle programs made under highly controlled pilot and commercial paper machine conditions. The results presented in this paper suggest that, in addition to improvements in machine operation, the retention, drainage and formation program can have a marked influence on the paper quality. Improvement of the topographical characteristics of the base paper was observed when the microparticle was a colloidal borosilicate inorganic oxide.

  • Safety standards for long-range artillery ammunition test and training sites follow the US artillery shooting range safety zone standards. Although the South Korean geographical conditions of shooting ranges are different from those of the United States, there is no safety standard reflecting the South Korean topographical characteristics. Probable error associated with the shooting range, trajectory should be considered in establishing the safety standards. In this study, we present the safety standards for the ammunition testing site suitable for the Korean situation, with applying a concept of trajectory and probable error differed by ammunition type, which are currently confirmed by the South Korean Army's artillery shooting.

  • The failure at the head section of rubble mound breakwaters is more important than other failure modes. because this initial failures will occur the failure of the trunk section and lead to the instability of the structure. The three-dimensional failure modes are discussed using the experimental data with multi-directional waves considering the failure modes. It was occurred by the topographical characteristics around the head of rubble mound breakwater. The spacial characteristics of failure mode around the rubble-mound structures can be summarized as follows: 1) It was clarified that the failure modes at the round head of a detached breakwater are classified as failure by plunging breaker on the slope, failure by direct incident wave force and failure at the rubble mound breakwaters. 2) The failure mode was found in the lower wave height than the design wave by the breaker depth effects and topography around structures. It is clarified that the structure was monitored safely designed for the design wave but the failure was occurred by the reason of breaker waves.

  • The architectural characteristics and historical positioning which the historical architecture will be understood better through collecting results from researches which was done on various points of views and positions. Therefore, a study on the layout of the main palace of Goryeo Dynasty also becomes a prerequisite for understanding the architectural characteristics and historical positioning which it possesses. However, the reality is that as the results from the excavation and preceding researches were not integrated together, the understanding of the layout of main palace is remaining on a partial and conceptual level. Therefore, this paper attempted to review in overall the restoration of the layout of the main palace of Goryeo Dynasty using historical documents, precedent researches, excavation maps, topographical map and cadastral maps. Consequently, it was possible to confirm the name of some of the ruins and restore the location and layout of other buildings. The result of this research presented above, will become a basis for understanding the layout of the main palace of Goryeo Dynasty in more realistic and way. Furthermore, it could be used as a fundamental data for related researches.

  • For the efficient control of atmospheric quality, it is so important to predict the influence accurately of which the air pollutant emitted into the atmosphere. Atmospheric dispersion model enables to simulate and grasp the atmospheric condition occurred due to the emission of pollutants. The result of model is largely affected by the amount of emission, the characteristics of physical and chemical process, meteorological input data, and the receptor which the concentration is calculated. The aim of this research, therefore, is to suggest more suitable model in Pusan area than other areas by performing TCM2, CDM2.0 and ISCLT2 models. As the basic work for executing the model, we computed the amount of emission of air pollutants in Pusan at 1992 and analyzed the occurrence frequency of atmospheric stability for recent decade(1985~19941, CDM2.0 showed the similar result relatively with observed value in the case of full year(1992), fall and winter, and ISCLT2 brought more suitable result in spring for Pusan area. As the result of this research, in future, it is necessary for us to develop the numerical model considering the topographical characteristics, to select the proper observation site and to increase the observation site for Pusan.
