Numerical analysis for the in-situ top base foundation (In-situ TBF) was carried out in order to investigate the effect of bearing capacity and the load delivering mechanisms in granular soil. The input data for the numerical model was prepared from the result obtained from the plate load test and full size in-situ TBF field tests. According to the result of numerical analysis, the behavior of in-situ TBF showed that bearing capacity of the foundation increased by $50{\sim}100%$ and settlement was reduced up to $1/2{\sim}1/3$ comparing to other types foundation. The effect of cone-shaped part of the in-situ TBF was as important as pile part for the improvement of foundation stability. The variation of the length of pile part indicated that the present length was proved satisfactory in terms of effectiveness.
This paper describes a numerical method for pile foundation subjected to earthquake loading using dynamic Winkler foundation model. To verify the numerical method, shaking table tests were carried out. In shaking table tests, accelerations and pile bending moments were measured for single pile and pile groups with a spacing-to-diameter ratio of 2.5 under fixed input base acceleration. In numerical analysis, the input base and free field accelerations measured from shaking table tests were used as input base motions. Based on the results obtained, free field acceleration was magnified relative to input base acceleration, whereas pile head accelerations reduced relatively to free field acceleration for soil-pile interaction. Measured and predicted bending moments for both cases have maximum value within the distance 10cm(4d) from the pile top. However, there are some differences between the results of numerical analysis and shake table test below 10cm(4d) from the pile top.
The foundation insert is a tubular steel section which is embedded into the concrete of the foundation. The tower base section of the wind turbine is mounted on it. It has a top flange (L type) protruding far enough above the concrete to allow bolts to be inserted from underneath. The load is transmitted to the concrete at the base of the section through a T shaped flange. It has many holes for the reinforcements and the cables. The reinforcements of the concrete foundation run through the insert via a series of holes to bind the inner section to the outer section. Holes are provided for the power and communications cabling. The design follows normal European wind turbine practice, based on GL 2003 and Eurocode regulations.

To utilize the Top-Down construction method, it is required to analyse building area, floors, and soil conditions to choose the three basic elements of retaining wall, base column, and floor structure. The purpose of this research is to compare the methods of Top-Down with other construction methods. The research method is to analyse the project conditions of Top-Down project cases. The aim is to develop a method of selecting alternatives, considering construction characteristics, work schedule, supporting methods, foundation types.
The study deals with physical modeling of a typical building frame resting on pile raft foundation and embedded in cohesive soil mass using finite element based software ETABS. Both- the elements of superstructure and substructure (i.e., foundation) including soil is assumed to remain in elastic state at all the time. The raft is modelled as a thin plate and the pile and soils are treated as interactive springs. Both- the resistance of the piles as well as that of raft base - are incorporated into the model. Interactions between raft-soil-pile are computed. The proposed method makes it possible to solve the problems of uniformly and large non-uniformly arranged piled rafts in a time saving way using finite element based software ETABS. The effect of the various parameters of the pile raft foundation such as thickness of raft and pile diameter is evaluated on the response of superstructure. The response included the displacement at the top of the frame and bending moment in columns. The soil-structure interaction effect is found to increase displacement and increase the absolute maximum positive and negative moments. The effect of the soil- structure interaction is observed to be significant for the type of foundation and soil considered in the present study.
A model experiment with a scale of 1:150 has been conducted to investigate the dynamic responses of a freestanding four-column bridge tower subjected to regular wave, random wave and coupled wave-current actions. The base shear forces of the caisson foundation and the dynamic behaviors of the superstructure were measured and analyzed. The comparisons of the test values with the theoretical values shows that wave-induced base shear forces on the bridge caisson foundation can be approximated by using a wave force calculation method in which the structure is assumed to be fixed and rigid. Although the mean square errors of the base shear forces excited by joint random wave and current actions are approximately equal to those excited by pure random waves, the existence of a forward current increases the forward base shear forces and decreases the backward base shear forces. The tower top displacements excited by wave-currents are similar to those excited by waves, suggesting that a current does not significantly affect the dynamic responses of the superstructure of the bridge tower. The experiment results can be used as a reference for similar engineering design.

Top Base Foundation(TBF) is a stabilization method for light weight structures particularly in the soft ground. It is widely used for the increment of bearing capacity and restraining settlement of foundations when the bearing capacity of ground is not enough. However, when the design values from exiting Japanese standard are compared with the observation values from the field measurement, the bearing capacity of exiting standard estimated smaller For this reason, it is necessary to establish more reasonable prediction technique considering to understand the behavior of TBF in soft ground. In this study, 1/5 scale model tests were performed in the laboratory. Also, full scale tests were carried out in order to investigate the behavior of TBF with various shapes. In addition, about 100 sites measurement data were evaluated to investigate the behavior of TBF in various ground conditions. Based on the results of the model tests and field measurement data, it was possible to establish more reasonable the bearing capacity equation of TBF considering various N-value of soil, the effect of underground water and failure shapes.

A 1257-m-long irregular deep foundation pit located in the central of Nanjing, China was constructed using the combined full-width and half-width top-down method. Based on the long-term field monitoring data, this study analyzed the evolution characteristics of the vertical movement of the columns, internal force of the struts, and axial force of the structural beam and slab. The relevance of the three mentioned above and their relationship with the excavation process, structural system, and geological conditions were also investigated. The results showed that the column uplift was within the range of 0.08% to 0.22% of the excavation depth, and the embedded depth ratio of the diaphragm wall and the bottom heave affected significantly on the column uplift. The differential settlement between the column and diaphragm wall remained unchanged after the base slab was cast. The final settlement of the diaphragm wall was twice the column uplift. The internal force of the struts did not varied monotonically but was related to numerous factors such as the excavation depth, number of struts, and environmental conditions. Additionally, the dynamic force and deformation of the columns, beams, and slabs were analyzed to investigate the inherent relationship and variation patterns of the responses of different parts of the structure.

Response spectra of a building are made with a SDOF system taking into account a first mode shape, even though higher modes may affect on the dynamic responses of a high-rise building. A soft soil layer under a building also affects on the responses of a building. In this study, seismic responses of a MDOF system were investigated to examine the effects of higher modes on the response of a tall building by comparing them with those of a SDOF system including the kinematic interaction effect. Study was performed using a pseudo 3D finite element program with seven bedrock earthquake records downloaded from the PEER database. Effects of higher modes on the seismic responses of a tall building were investigated for base shear force and base moment of a MDOF system including story shear forces and story moments. Study results show that higher modes of a MDOF system contribute to a reduction of base shear force up to 1/4-1/5 of KBC and base moment. The effect of higher modes is more significant on the base shear force than on the base moment. Maximum story shear force and moment occurred at the top part of a building rather than at a base in the cases of tall buildings differently from short buildings, and higher modes of a tall building affected on the base forces making them almost constant at the base. A soft soil layer also affects some on the base shear force of a high-rise building independently on the soft soil type, but a soft soil effect is prominent on the base moment.
