The objective of this study was to evaluate the toothbrush abrasion characteristics of class V restorations. Thirty extracted human premolars, which were collected from oral surgery clinics were used. We mounted five teeth in a metal ring mold of 50 mm in diameter and 15 mm in height using chemically cured acrylic resin. Class V cavities were prepared in lingual cervical root surfaces and restored using one of following restorative materials : Dentin Conditioner/Fuji II LC (Group FL), All Bond II/Z-250 (Group ZT), One-up Bond F/Palfigue Estelite (Group PE), F2000 Primer/Adhesive (Group FT), and Prime & Bond 2.1/Dyract AP (Group DR). They were stored under distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ for seven days. The toothbrush abrasion test was conducted using a wear testing machine of pin-on disk type under a load of 1.5 N for 100,000 cycles. We have examined the bonded interfaces, the changes of surface roughness and color of abraded surfaces. From this experiment, the following results were obtained. 1. The change of surface roughness showed high degree: RMGIC>compomer>composite resin (p<0.05). 2. Because of the protrusion and missing of filler particles, SEM observation of abraded surfaces of RMGIC and compomers revealed the increase of surface roughness due to the selective removal of matrix resin. 3. The color change by toothbrush abrasion was affected in large part by the change of $L^*$ and $b^*$ of resin composites (p<0.05). 4. The color change by toothbrush abrasion was so small to detect by human eyes. 5. SEM observation of abraded surfaces revealed the interface bonding was the best in the FT group.

Patients with fixed orthodontic appliances frequently have increased levels of plaque accumulation leading to the possibility of gingivitis or enamel decalcification. Although many methods may be helpful in reducing dental plaque formation, the optimal mechanical removal of plaque is the most important factor during orthodontic treatment. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of an electric toothbrush (with a specially designed orthodontic brush head) compared to a manual toothbrush in controlling plaque and gingivitis for patients with fixed orthodontic appliances. Oral hygiene status was measured in thirty-four patients using a plaque index, a gingival index and a bleeding index, before and four weeks after the attachment of fixed orthodontic appliances. Patients were randomly divided into two groups: electric and manual toothbrush groups. Oral hygiene instruction was given according to the type of toothbrush used. The Braun Oral-B D9511 with Braun Oral-B Ortho OD 15-1 brush head was used as the electric toothbrush while the Butler G.U.M. 124 was given as the manual toothbrush. After four md eight weeks, oral hygiene status was measured again. Through a comparison between the electric and the manual toothbrush groups, the following results were obtained. 1. All oral hygiene indices showed an increasing tendency after four weeks of fixed orthodontic appliance. 2. All indices presented a decreasing tendency four and eight weeks after oral hygiene instruction. 3. In case of the gingival index and bleeding index, the decreasing tendency did not show a statistically significant difference between the electric and the manual toothbrush groups. 4. The decreasing tendency of plaque index presented a statistically significant difference between the two groups, showing that the electric toothbrush was more effective in terms of oral hygiene. These findings suggest that an electric toothbrush is useful to orthodontic patients with fixed appliances.

The purpose of this study was to propose a method for the effective management of toothbrush contamination. Toothbrush microbial contamination was analyzed according to the duration of toothbrush use, frequency of toothbrush use per day, and toothbrush storage location. We also analyzed the microbial reduction effect of vinegar, antimicrobial mouth rinse, bamboo salt, and baking soda, which are sterilization materials that can be easily used every day. We collected 45 toothbrushes from university dormitories from May to June 2018. To determine the degree of microbiological contamination with general bacteria, coliform bacteria, and Staphylococcus aureus, bristle samples were cultured at $36^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours using 3M$^{TM}$ Petrifilm plates and then measured based on Petrifilm evaluation criteria. Toothbrush microorganisms were analyzed according to the duration of use, frequency of use per day, storage location, and effect of each sterilization material. General bacteria, coliforms, and S. aureus contamination increased with frequency and duration of use (p<0.05). In particular, S. aureus showed a statistically significant increase to 36.15 CFU/ml after 1 month, 504.23 CFU/ml after 2 months, and 2,386.67 CFU/ml after 3 months (p<0.05). We found that 1% vinegar was the most effective substance for reducing general bacteria, coliforms, and S. aureus. In addition, 1% antimicrobial mouth rinse solution applied for 5 minutes was the most effective in reducing S. aureus. It is crucial to recognize the importance of toothbrush care and store toothbrushes in a dry place and replace them periodically. We recommend use of vinegar and antimicrobial mouth rinse solution to disinfect toothbrushes. These should be applied as a 1% solution for at least 1 minute. Proper care of toothbrushes is important in maintaining oral health as well as overall health. Instructions on toothbrush care should be given when teaching children or adults how to brush teeth.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the toothbrushing practice behavior of preschool children by observing children's actual toothbrushing behavior and further to offer basic data available for being reflected in direction and goal establishment of the systematic and organized oral health education in consideration of individual characteristic. Methods : It targeted 225 preschool children from May 6, 2010 to June 8, and analyzed by having the survey results of totally 208 people, except 17 who are noncooperative with the observation survey. As for the collected materials, it carried out frequency analysis and $x^2$-test in order to grasp subjects' general characteristics and toothbrushing practice behaviors and to examine correlation, by using SPSS 12.0 for window. Results : 1. A grasp of toothbrush was indicated 47.1% for "proper" and 52.9% for "improper." The position of holding a toothbrush was indicated to be the highest with 59.6% for "the center in grip." 2. Toothpaste amount was indicated to be 49.0% for" tip in toothbrush, "followed by 38.9% for "half in toothbrush" and 12% for "every side of toothbrush" in order. Significant difference was shown according to age($x^2$=19.125. p<.05). 3. Average toothbrushing time per once was surveyed to be $106{\pm}56$ seconds. 4. As for a toothbrushing method by region, the labial and the baccal surface were indicated to be horizontal scrub with 63% and fones method 11.5%. Significant difference was shown according to gender($x^2$=10.275. p<.05). The anterior lingual surface wasn't washed with 72.6%. Significant difference was shown according to appearance of education($x^2$=6.056. p<.05). 5. A case of requiring exchange because of being widened toothbrush was indicated to be 59.2%. The toothbrush replacement in the highest ratio was needed in kindergarten teachers. Conclusions : The actual toothbrushing practice attitude of preschool children was surveyed to be not right as a whole such as toothbrushing time, toothbrushing method, toothpaste amount, and replacement of toothbrush. Accordingly, the oral health education will need to be performed in order for a change into positive attitude and for improvement in practice level. In addition, it is considered to be likely necessary for development in substantial oral health educational program available for enhancing knowledge level of oral health care in mothers and kindergarten teachers.
Objectives : Purpose of this research is to determined the general knowledge on oral health and the usage of oral hygiene products in the orthodontic patients and try to provide an appropriate oral hygiene products for the patients. Methods : Orthodontic patients who visited a dental clinic in Daejeon were selected and data from 352 patients were collected. Questionnaire based on survey was conducted from 1st of March to 30th in 2011 and all the data was analysed by using SPSS statistical program (VER 15.0). Frequency analysis, $x^2$ test, T-test and the amount of diurnal variance analysis (one-way ANOVA) were also used. After that, scheffe's post-test method was conducted. Results : According to the general characteristics of oral health care knowledge score was $2.87{\pm}0.60$, the attitude score was $2.96{\pm}0.57$. toothbrush replacement cycle were less than 3 months (p=0.007, p=0.000) and frequency of brushing one day more than three times higher in patients with knowledge to help attitude. according to the sex, age, and duration of orthodontic treatment with oral hygiene devices of usage was higher in the calibration toothbrush usage, awareness was higher in the interdental toothbrushes. according to the type of orthodontic devices from the oral hygiene devices usage, removable group was the orthodontic toothbrush and electric toothbrush group were highest in the 'unknown', the fixed group was orthodontic toothbrush(67.3%) and electric toothbrushes(40.8%) was higher in the usage. Patients who used oral hygiene devices such as orthodontic tooth brush, interdental brush, electric toothbrush, water pik and fern solution showed wider knowledge on oral health care and oral hygiene devices compared to patients who answered as does not aware of oral hygiene devices and never used these products before. Conclusions : Orthodontic patient's oral health attitudes, knowledge, and oral hygiene devices usage are the general characteristics of the highest in the orthodontic toothbrush usage, awareness was higher in the interdental brush. Water pik and fern solution, rubber and gingival interdental stimulator turned massage does not use or low. Based on results from research, overall orthodontic patients who visited a dental clinic had low awareness and usage of oral hygiene devices. Therefore, it is required to educate general publics and the orthodontic patients and also promote the importance of usage of oral hygiene devices.
Objective of this study was to compared the amount of bacteria in the toothbrush according to the management method of the toothbrush in use and the acidity of intraoral bacteria. Toothbrushes in use in more than one month of 50 healthy adults were collected and the number of bacteria and pH of the toothbrushes were measured. When the number of brushings per day was 4, the pH 4.97 and the microbial numbers was the lowest at 42.16(104×CFU/ml). When the replacement period of the toothbrush was 1 month, the pH 5.35 and the microbial numbers was the lowest at 19.80(104×CFU/ml). When stored in the bathroom, the pH 4.78, and the microbial numbers was highest at 149.46(104×CFU/ml). As a result, in order to block the germs of the toothbrush, it is necessary to develop a method that can easily disinfect the contaminated toothbrush at home. In addition, I think that it is necessary to educate about the proper brush cleaning and storage method when teaching brushing.
To improve oral hygiene management, the effects of toothbrush training on general oral hygiene based on the simplified oral hygiene index(S-OHI) and degree of knowledge about toothbrushing were examined. Pre-and post-training changes in the S-OHI (lower score = better oral health status) showed a significant decrease in score in all variables (gender, age, marital status, occupation, and level of education).Pre- and post-training changes in the degree of knowledge about toothbrushing showed a significant increase. Negative correlations between the S-OHI, oral health status, and degree of knowledge about toothbrushing and the S-OHI and the Decayed, Missing, Filled (DMF) index (the better the oral cavity environment, the lower the DMF index) were observed. Positive effects of repeated toothbrush training on the maintenance of healthy oral cavity environment and continuous oral health management were observed, as reflected by the correct toothbrushing-related knowledge and skills.
Objectives: Interdental toothbrushes are made and sold in various design types and brush thicknesses. However, there is little research on which type of interdental toothbrush currently manufactured and sold on the market is the most effective in eliminating interdental plaque. Therefore, this study aims at comparing the elimination rate of artificial dental plaque between reciprocating- and rotating-types of interdental toothbrush based on the frequency of application and thickness of brush. Methods: This study focused on the effective management of dental plaque using interdental toothbrush, a recommended item for personal dental hygiene. The method was as follows: artificial dental plaque coloring was applied to the distal surface of artificial tooth #46 and the mesial surface of #47. The area was subject to reciprocal movement three and six times to eliminate artificial plaque. Results: The results showed that using a 0.7mm rotating interdental toothbrush, on the proximal surface of each molar, the elimination rates were: on the distal surface of #46, upon three applications 40.24%, upon six applications 30.41%; on the mesial surface of #47, upon three applications 44.52%, upon six applications 29.72%. Conclusions: These results showed that for rotating-type interdental toothbrushes, a high dental plaque elimination rate was observed even though many reciprocal movements were not performed.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the wear index of toothbrush and related factors in the university students. A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 573 university students from March 16 to April 10, 2015. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics of the subjects, wear index, and wear rate of the toothbrush. The wear index of 46.9 percent was above 0.400, and the average wear index was $0.403{\pm}0.20$. Overall, the wear index of the toothbrushes was high. 2. As a result of measuring the wear rate of the toothbrushes, the wear rate of 70.4 percent stood at 1 and 2. The average wear rate stood at $1.620{\pm}0.74$. Overall, the wear rate of the toothbrushes was high. 3. As for wear index and wear rate by gender, the wear index and wear rate of the toothbrushes used by the male students were larger than those of the toothbrushes used by the female students. The wear index and wear rate were significantly higher when the toothbrush replacement period was longer. Given the findings of the study, efficient oral health education on the right toothbrush management should be provided for college students to manage their toothbrushes properly.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial effect of a newly devised toothbrush with light-emitting diodes (LEDs) on Porphyromonas gingivalis attached to sandblasted and acid-etched titanium surfaces. Methods: The study included a control group, a commercial photodynamic therapy (PDT) group, and 3 test groups (B, BL, and BLE). The disks in the PDT group were placed in methylene blue and then irradiated with a diode laser. The B disks were only brushed, the BL disks were brushed with an LED toothbrush, and the BLE disks were placed into erythrosine and then brushed with an LED toothbrush. After the different treatments, bacteria were detached from the disks and spread on selective agar. The number of viable bacteria and percentage of bacterial reduction were determined from colony counts. Scanning electron microscopy was performed to visualize bacterial alterations. Results: The number of viable bacteria in the BLE group was significantly lower than that in the other groups (P<0.05). Scanning electron microscopy showed that bacterial cell walls were intact in the control and B groups, but changed after commercial PDT and LED exposure. Conclusions: The findings suggest that an LED toothbrush with erythrosine treatment was more effective than a commercial PDT kit in reducing the number of P. gingivalis cells attached to surface-modified titanium in vitro.
