  • We tend to consider only static occlusion such as molar relationship, canine key, and interdigitation at finishing stage. Of course, this static occlusion is important for post-orthodontic stability. But we should remember that mandible is always on the move during its various functions. If no pressure or too much pressure is put on during its functions, untoward tooth movement could occur. And tooth mobility, periodontitis, wear facet, bruxism, and far worse temporomandibular disorder could occur. After many studies have been done on what is a desirable occlusal scheme to strengthen post-orthodontic stability, today, "mutually protective occlusion" is recommended. If an orthodontist does not have understanding about this occlusal scheme during orthodontic treatment, the following conditions will be resulted after orthodontic treatment. I. Centric discrepancy 1. centric prematurity 2. sunday bite 3. molar fulcrum II. Eccentric discrepancy 1. posterior interference 2. anterior interference If we have deep understanding about these discrepancies that can happen after orthodontic treatment and their causes, corrections, and especially preventions against them, post-orthodontic stability could be strengthened and further temporomandibular disorder could be prevented.

  • The Vibration signals of a gear driving system is often associated with gear tooth faults. Many studies have been done on the detection of impulsive vibration signals, which characterize the breaka ge of a gear tooth. Also, most of the studies on gear fault diagnosis are only about the fault existence at one gear-pair. This study concerns on the several possible faults of a geared motor that has three gear pairs. The measurement and analysis on the vibration signals of a running geared motor shows the relationship between the gear faults and the vibration signals. This study also shows that adaptive interference canceling technique can be appropriately applicable to detect which gear-pair has the fault, and that wavelet is better than spectrogram to figure out the gear fault.

  • The extraction of the valid measurement region from the interference fringe pattern is a significant step when measuring gear tooth flank form deviation with grazing incidence interferometry, which will affect the measurement accuracy. In order to overcome the drawback of the conventionally used method in which the object image pattern must be captured, an improved segmentation approach is proposed in this paper. The interference fringe patterns feature, which is smoothed by the nonlinear diffusion, would be extracted by the structure tensor first. And then they are incorporated into the vector-valued Chan-Vese model to extract the valid measurement region. This method is verified in a variety of interference fringe patterns, and the segmentation results show its feasibility and accuracy.

  • Unique tooth-like (milky white) color ${\beta}$-Ti dental arch wires are prepared by anodization in a 1M $H_2SO_4$ electrolyte at $30^{\circ}C$ and 30 V for 88 min and 40 s. Aggregates are formed on these surfaces of the anodized wires with tooth-like colors, and the results are different from those of the anodized wires with monochromatic colors which have smooth oxide surfaces. Similar to the monochromatic wires, the composition of the oxide layer is $TiO_{2-x}$ and the x approaches zero at the outer layer. But different from the amorphous structure observed in monochromatic wires, the oxide layers are partially crystallized with an anatase structure. The milky white colors result from the rough and crystalized oxide layers, not by the interference effect as observed in monochromatic wires.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to clarify the effects of continuous force application for extrusive tipping movement and occlusal interference on periapical root resorption in the rat mandibular first molar. Methods: We constructed an appliance comprising a titanium screw implant with a cobalt-chromium post as the anchorage unit and a nickel-titanium closed coil spring (50 cN) as the active unit. Force was applied on the mandibular left first molar of rats for 8 (n = 10) and 15 days (n = 10; experimental groups), with the tooth in occlusion. Five rats were included as a non-treated control group to examine the body effect of the appliance. Active root resorption lacunae, identified using tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase, were evaluated in terms of the length, depth, and area. Results: The rat mandibular first molars were mesially tipped and extruded in the occlusal direction. This mesio-occlusal tipping movement and occlusion resulted in the formation of a compression zone and active root resorption lacunae in the distoapical third of the distal roots. However, there was no significant difference in the amount of root resorption between the two experimental groups. The control group did not exhibit any active root resorption lacunae. Conclusions: Periapical root resorption was induced by continuous extrusive tipping force and occlusal interference in rat mandibular molars. These data suggest that we orthodontists had better take care not to induce occlusal interference during our orthodontic treatment.

  • When designing a gerotor, designers determine basic dimensions of a gerotor with transmitted power considering strength, interference and so. on. But, designers can not easily obtain the tooth profile generated by dimensions as well as the geometry bob for cutting the tooth profile. In order to resolve these problems, an automatic design sys-tem creating not only the solid model of a gerotor but also that of the generating hob using the design parameters of dimen-sions is developed. Through the developed system, designers can improve the efficiency of design and satisfy the variable requirements of design as well. In this research, the three-dimensional solid models for gerotors are generated considering the design parameters. Besides, those for generating hob regarding the design parameters of hob is created automatically.

  • Reduction gear with internal gear pair need functions such as compact size, high reduction ratios, high transmission efficiency, and low noise. Feasible design region of the internal gear pair with a small tooth difference is extremely limited because the internal gear pair is subject to interference in meshing and cutting. Single-objective optimal design can not simulataneously satisfy the manifold requirements of the internal gear pair and can not determine the economical specification of a pinion cutter. Multi-objective optimal design which include the specification of the pinion cutter in design variables is developed, considering the manufacturing error of an internalgear pair and the re-sharpening of the pinion cutter.

  • Cold ironing, as a post-forging operation of warm forged gears, needs a clear understanding of form errors due to die-elasticity and springback of component. In order to simplify the analysis of cold ironing, a single tooth instead of a whole gear component was investigated. The influence of initial surface roughness, die design, and die/workpiece interference has been examined experimentally and numerically. As a result the changes in geometrical profile, dimensions, and surface finish in a single tooth were observed. This study demonstrates that predicted dimensions can be achieved and surface finish also can be greatly improved.

  • Backlashes of gears provide gears for good lubrication and for removal of the interference between teeth by the wear and manufacturing errors. The backlash is the strong nonlinear factor to gears. This study deals with nonlinear modeling of helical gears with backlash. Excitation of helical gears comes from torque variation, the tooth surface error, and the periodical change of mesh stiffness. To study the effect of torque fluctuation, equation of motion for the single degree of freedom torsional model of helical gears with the periodical change of mesh stiffness and the backlash was derived. The Newmark beta method and the Newton-Raphson method were used to obtain the nonlinear behaviors of mesh forces of helical gears. All excitation frequencies initially caused the tooth separation and single-sided impacts of the gear pair and eventually led to the normal tooth contact. However, some special excitation frequencies caused the single-sided impacts in the entire time as well as the initial time. Damping increase reduced the duration of single-sided impacts, and the backlash increase caused those in the entire time domain.
