  • Dimension and tolerance are very important factors both in a design stage and in a manufacturing stage. As a part of process planning, the tolerance transfer aims at determining the method for converting design dimensions and tolerances into manufacturing dimensions and tolerances based on a given drawing. A procedure for the tolerance transfer is proposed in this paper. Tolerance chart is a valuable graphical tool for a process planner to determine the manufacturing dimensions and tolerances, and consisted of several steps. Among several steps necessary for making up the tolerance chart, the methods for the identification of dimension chain, the determination of tolerances, and the calculation of operational dimensions are presented by using concepts and new presentation methods. A solution method for each step is derived which will be used to establish the tolerance transfer techniques.

  • A man model is a useful design tool for the evaluation of man machine systems and products. An arm reach trajectory prediction for such a model will be specifically useful to present human activities and, consequently, could increase the accuracy and reality of the evaluation. In this study, a three-dimensional reach trajectory prediction model was developed using an inverse kinematics technique. The upper body was modeled as a four link open kinematic chain with seven degrees of freedom. The Resolved Motion Method used for the robot kinematics problem was used to predict the joint movements. The cost function of the perceived discomfort developed using the central composite design was also used as a performance function. This model predicts the posture by moving the joints to minimize the discomfort on the constraint of the end effector velocity directed to a target point. The results of the pairwise t-test showed that all the joint coordinates except the shoulder joint's showed statistically no differences at .alpha. = 0.01. The reach trajectory prediction model developed in this study was found to accurately simulate human arm reach trajectory and the model will help understand the human arm reach movement.

  • A Bayesian model-based clustering method is proposed for clustering objects on the basis of dissimilarites. This combines two basic ideas. The first is that tile objects have latent positions in a Euclidean space, and that the observed dissimilarities are measurements of the Euclidean distances with error. The second idea is that the latent positions are generated from a mixture of multivariate normal distributions, each one corresponding to a cluster. We estimate the resulting model in a Bayesian way using Markov chain Monte Carlo. The method carries out multidimensional scaling and model-based clustering simultaneously, and yields good object configurations and good clustering results with reasonable measures of clustering uncertainties. In the examples we studied, the clustering results based on low-dimensional configurations were almost as good as those based on high-dimensional ones. Thus tile method can be used as a tool for dimension reduction when clustering high-dimensional objects, which may be useful especially for visual inspection of clusters. We also propose a Bayesian criterion for choosing the dimension of the object configuration and the number of clusters simultaneously. This is easy to compute and works reasonably well in simulations and real examples.

  • The marginal likelihood has become an important tool for model selection in Bayesian analysis because it can be used to rank the models. We discuss the marginal likelihood for Poisson regression models that are potentially useful in small area estimation. Computation in these models is intensive and it requires an implementation of Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods. Using importance sampling and multivariate density estimation, we demonstrate a computation of the marginal likelihood through an output analysis from an MCMC sampler.

  • In many make-to-order production systems customers ask due date confirmed and kept. Unexpected urgent orders from valuable customers often requires short lead times, which causes existing orders in the production schedule to be delayed so that their confirmed due dates cannot be met. This Imposes significant uncertainty on the production schedule in a supply chain. In this paper, we propose a new concept of capacity reservation as a viable tool for due date promising and suggest its operational alternatives. Simulation results show that the reserved capacity scheme appears to outperform simple FCFS scheduling policy in terms of the number of valuable urgent orders accepted and total profit attained.

  • Mesogen-Jacketed Liquid Crystalline Polymers, MJLCPs, are polymers with mesogenic side groups directly attached to main-chains without using flexible connecting spacers and are able to form liquid crystalline structures. Later work on structure-property of the polymers revealed that the side groups are not necessarily mesogenic for the polymers to form a mesophase so long as that the side groups are directly attached to the backbones and the side groups are large enough. Because of its inherent chain stiffness and that the monomers of MJLCPs are readily polymerizable by "living" free radical polymerizations, MJLCP offered a unique handy tool for making block copolymers. In addition, MJLCP offered also new opportunities for novel functional materials.

  • RNA interference (RNAi), a process of sequence-specific gene suppression, has been known as a natural gene regulatory mechanism in a wide range of lower organisms. Recently, we have reported that a transfection of human U6 promoter (hU6) driven hairpin small-interference RNA (siRNA) plasmid specifically knocks down the target gene by post-transcriptional gene silencing in mammalian cells. Here we report that transfection of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) products, containing human U6 promoter with hairpin siRNA, knocks down the target gene expression in human teratocarcinoma NT-2/D1 cells. Moreover, we showed 3' end termination sequence, 5 Ts, is not critical elements for knocking down in PCR-based siRNA system. Therefore, the PCR-based siRNA system is a promising tool not only for the screening but also to temporally regulate gene expression in the human progenitor cells.
