Generally, the machinability of materials that have a good mechanical properties is poor. The material having a high strength, high toughness in high temperature and wear resistance, it is difficult to remove a chip from workpiece. STD11 and NAK80 are kinds of these materials and these materials can be used in many industrial fields. But it is limited in use because of high cost and poor machinability. In this experimental study, the cutting of STD11 and NAK80 were used to decide the machinability and the tool shape of CBN ball end mill. From the results, the CBN ball end mill is verified that the estimated cutting edge shape of rake angle 30 degree has consistent effect on the tool wear and cutting force.

This paper presents an experimental study of the effect of cutting tool materials on surface quality when turning hardened steels. Machining tests on a lathe are performed using polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) and ceramic tools at various cutting conditions without coolant. From the experiments, it is observed that the radial force is the largest force component regardless the type of tool used. The specific cutting energy for the hard turning is estimated to be considerably smaller than the specific grinding energy. It is also found that cutting force and surface roughness with the PCBN tools are higher and better than those with the ceramic tools under the same cutting condition. It is due that the PCBN tools transfer the generated heat more effectively than the ceramic tools due to their higher thermal conductivity. The optimal cutting conditions for the best surface quality are selected by using an orthogonal array concept.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the difference in cutting characteristics of cermet, carbide and coated carbide tools in the similar application range via turning test of various conditions. The cermet and carbide tools in the range of ISO P10 grade were developed using optimum compositions with a view to obtaining a high toughness and hardness by PM process. First mechanical properties were characterized on these tools. Experimental results of wear behaviour and resistance to fracturing were presented and discussed in the turning of gray cast iron and alloy steels by cermet, carbide and coated carbide tools. The coated carbide tool shows similar cutting performance compared to the cermet, while the cermet has better combination of wear resistance and toughness of high speed (V=500m/min) cutting in comparison with carbide and coated carbide tools, and also shows a potentiality for cast iron cutting. Fe adhesive behaviour on the tools and surface roughness of workpieces were explained by chemical affinity between tools and workpieces.

The trend of cutting process today goes toward higher precision and higher efficiency. Many thermal/frictional troubles occur in high-speed machining of die and mold steels. In this paper, the thermal characteristics are evaluated in high sped ball end-milling of hardened steel(HRc42). Experimental work is performed on the effect of cutting environments on tool life and cutting temperature. Cutting environments involve dry, wet(20bar), compressed chilly air at -9$^{\circ}C$, compressed chilly air at -35$^{\circ}C$. The measuring technique of cutting temperature using implanted thermocouple is used. The cutting temperature is about 79$0^{\circ}C$, 35$0^{\circ}C$ and 54$0^{\circ}C$ in dry, wet and compressed chilly air at +9$^{\circ}C$, respectively. The tool life for compressed chilly air at -9$^{\circ}C$ is longer than all other cutting environments in experiment.

The needs to machine hardened steels with high productivity and good surface integrity have been increased in the dies & molds industry. This paper presents some experimental results on the CBN ball endmilling for hardened tool steel. This investigation concerns on the effects of cutting speed and cutting fluids on the cutting performance such as cutting forces, tool wear, and surface finish. The wear of CBN ball endmill for each cutting conditions were also examined through the microscopic observation. It has been found out that the higher cutting speeds with cutting fluids result in better cutting performance.

Carbon nitride thin films were deposited by reactive sputtering for the hard coating materials on Si wafer and tool steels. When the nitrogen content of carbon nitride film on tool steel is 33.4%, the mean hardness and elastic modulus are 49.34 GPa and 307.2 GPa respectively. The nitrided or carburised surface acts as the diffusion barrier which shows better adhesion of carbon nitride thin film on the steel surface. To prevent nitrogen diffusion from the film, steel substrate can be saturated by nitrogen forming a Fe$_3$N layer. The desirable structure at the surface after carburising is martensite, but sometimes, due to high carbon content an proeutectoid Fe$_3$C structure may form at the grain boundaries, leaving the overall surface brittle and may cause defects.

In order to clarify the effects of nonmetallic inclusion contents insteels (SM45C & SCM440) on the tool life, cutting experiment was performed under various cutting conditions. Tool life, cutting force, roughness of machined surface and cutting mechanism are examined on these two kinds of steel. The following conclusions were obtained from the analysis (1) Cutting force of the steels was not affected by chemical component and nonmetallic inclusion. (2) If the rate of amount, Ca/S has a value grater than about 0.2 and addition of less amount of Al, Mn, tool wear of tips decreasesinturning. (3) It is also proved that higher contents of nonmetallic inclusion improve roughness of the surface. (4) Less amount of Ca, higher amount of S, Mn and Al improve the chip breakability.

Hot tool steel, in general, has not been used as a material in hot forging. However such a hot tool steel is recently applied to forging materials by recent forging technology. DH32 is known as a kind of hot tool steels, which is developed for characteristics of excellent strength and toughness in high temperature. Feasibility of DH32 to hot forging material has been researched to develop the hot forging technology of a plunger used for a large-sized marine fuel pump. Hot compression experimental works were performed to investigate the hot strain characteristic of DH32 and with the experimental results FE simulations were also conducted for the design of forging processes and preform. It is found out through the hot compression experimental works that DH32 has a hot brittleness at more than $1150^{\circ}C$.

Drilling is one of the most important operations in machining industry and usually the most efficient and economical method of cutting a hole in metal. From automobile parts to aircraft components, almost every manufactured product requires that holes are to be drilled for the purpose of assembly, creation of fluid passages, and so on. It is therefore desirable to monitor drill wear and hole quality changes during the hole drilling process. One important aspect in controlling the drilling process is drill wear status monitoring. With the monitoring, we may decide on optimal timing for tool change. The necessity of the detection of tool wear, fracture and the abnormal tool state has been emphasized in the machining process. Accordingly, this paper deals with the cutting characteristics of the hot-rolled high strength steels using common HSS drill. The performance variables include drill wear data obtained from drilling experiments conducted on the workpiece. The results are obtained from monitoring of the cutting force and Acoustic Emission (AE) signals, and from the detection of the abnormal tool state with the computer vision system.
