This study was conducted to evaluated the nature of the variety Tongil(Suweon 213-1) in resistance to the striped rice borer, Chilo suppressalis Walker, comparing with those of Rexoro(susceptible check) and TKM-6(resistant check) selected at IRRI. 1. The striped rice borer moths much more preferred the variety Tongil for oviposition than the varieties Rexoro and TKM-6. The variety Tongil and more egg masses and number of eggs than the varieties Rexoro and TKM-6, while TKM-6 having more egg masses and more number of eggs than Rexoro. This reaction was consistent throughout the test regardless of the number of tillers per hill. 2. In laboratory, preference of larvae for feeding was studied with 5cm of stem pieces of the varieties. The results showed, in contrast to the case of ovipositional preference, that the striped rice borer larvae least preferred the stems of Tongil among the test varieties, while larvae much more preferred the stems of Rexoro than those of TKM-6. 3. The larval weights at 20 days later infested on the 40 day-old plants were the lowest on Tongil among the test varieties. On the variety Rexoro the larvae had heavier body weights(43.0mg), higher pupation(64.9%) and higher adult emergence(83.3%) than those on Tongil(larval weights 30.3mg, pupation 60%, adult emergence 60.7%) and TKM-6(larval weights 35.7mg, pupation 56.3%, adult emergence 51.9%). The pupal weights, however, were not consistent among the test varieties and/or sexes in comparison with the larval weights, pupation and adult emergence above mentioned. 4. Field experiments indicated that the incidence of dead hearts at 70 days after transplanting was relatively higher on the variety Tongil(11.1%) than those on Rexoro(8.9%) and TKM-6(8.4%), and the incidence of white heads at harvest was, in contrast to the dead hearts, lower on Tongil(9.8%) than those on Rexoro(27.4%) and TKM-6(13.9%). At harvest lower larval survival observed on Tongil (49 larvae/40 hills) than those on the susceptible variety Rexoro(104 larvae/40 hills) and on the resistant variety TKM-6(70 larvae/40 hills). The average larval weights collected from three test varieties at harvest were 80.5mg from Tongil, 83.7mg from TKM-6 and 99.6mg from Rexoro. 5. Increased nitrogen fertilizer application to the variety Tongil, the striped rice borer damage was increased. Also, preference of larvae for feeding significantly increased with the increase of nitrogen fertilizer application. 6. Any specific association between the plant characters and striped rice borer resistance could not be found. The variety Tongil even having large number of tillers, short plant height, large stem, broad leaf, etc, had still high preference of moths for oviposition, low preference of larvae for feeding, low damage, and relatively high antibiosis. 7. Resistance of the variety Tongil to the striped rice borers seemed to be associated with the low feeding preference and the relatively high antibiosis, not associated directly with the ovipositional preference.
Cooking and eating qualities of two rice varieties in Korea, an Indica type 'Tongil' and a Japonica type 'Jinheung', were investigated to compare each other. Cooked rice of Tongil variety absorbed $4{\sim}6%$ more water at the same water-to-rice ratio, showed higher mechanical hardness and needed 20% higher water-to-rice ratio to maintain the same hardness as compared with Jinheung variety. Optimum water-to-rice ratios in cooking were shown to be 140% for Tongil and 120% for Jinheung as judged from the reciprocal hardness scale among textural parameters of cooked rice. When the degrees of gelatinization and retrogradation were determined from enzymic digestion, iodine colorimetric method and textural parameters, Tongil variety showed lower degrees of gelatinization and retrogradation than Jinheung variety did. Tongil variety exhibited a higher gelatinization temperature and lower maximum viscosity and breakdown in the amylograms of the rice powder than Jinheung variety did.
Properties of starch from three rice varieties in Korea, Indica types Tongil, Yusin and a Japonica type Jinheung were investigated. 1) Gelatinization temperatures of Tongil, Yushin and Jinheung rice were $72^{\circ}C,\;70^{\circ}C\;and\;68{\sim}69^{\circ}C$ respectively. Gelatinization temperature of Indica variety was higher than that of Japonica variety. 2) Blue values of Tongil, Yusin and Jinheung rice starch were 0.40, 0.39 and 0.35 respectively, in which differences among rice varieties were small. 3) Color intensity of three varieties of rice starch with iodine gave rise to absorption maxima at $610{\sim}625\;nm$. 4) Amylose contents of Tongil, Yusin and Jinheung rice starch were 23.2%, 21.3% and 20.6% respectively, which were lower than those of other cereals. Amylose content of Indica variety was higher than that of Japonica variety. 5) Alkali numbers of Tongil, Yusin and Jinheung rice starchs were 7.0, 7.0 and 6.8, respectively. The differences were negligible among rice varieties. Those values were higher than that of glutinous rice starch.
Starch characteristics and pasting properties of Tongil-type rice varieties with different amylose content were analyzed. Three different Tongil-type rice varieties and one Japonica-type rice variety were examined for their properties. Tongil-type rice varieties have longer panicles and higher rice yield (721-765 kg per 10a) than Boramchan, a Japonica-type high-yield rice variety. The protein content of the Tongil-type rice variety was higher than that of Boramchan. Japonica-type rice varieties had lower amylose content than Japonica-type rice varieties, except for Amimyeon (Milyang355). Amimyeon had higher protein content than the other varieties, and its amylose content was particularly high at 39.2%. The distribution of starch granule sizes of the four varieties was similar, and the particle size corresponding to D50 was approximately 87.8-81.9 ㎛. The pasting properties of rice flour varied among varieties. The Dasanbyeo and Hanarum2 amylogram patterns were similar. These two varieties had a higher peak viscosity (PV) and lower setback (SB) than Boramchan. In the case of Amimyeon, the hot paste viscosity (HPV), cool paste viscosity (CPV), and SB were significantly higher than those of the other Toingil-type varieties, and the breakdown (BD) was very low, showing pasting properties significantly different from that of the other varieties. The onset (To), peak (Tp), and conclusion temperature (Tc) of gelatinization of rice flour from Amimyeon were lower than those of the other tested varieties. In addition, the gelatinization temperature, measured using differnetial scanning calorimetry (DSC), and BD, measured using al rapid visco analyzer (RVA) were low in Amimyeon. Amylose content showed a high positive correlation with pasting time (PTi), HPV, and SB and a negative correlation with PV and BD.
This study was carried out to get information for diversifying of resistant genes to bacterial blight (BB) in Japonica cultivar breeding programs. TWo hundred nine rice varieties were tested for qualitive resistance to four races of BB; HB9101 isolate for race K1, HB9102 isolate for race K2, HB9103 isolate for race K3, and HB01001 isolate for race K3a. Two hundred nine rice varieties were divided into five groups according to their race reaction. Fourteen Tongil-type varieties and ninetyseven Japonica varieties showed susceptible reaction to four races; Kl, K2, K3 and K3a. Thirteen Tongil-type varieties and thirty-one Japonica varieties were resistant to only one race; K1. Nine Tongil-type varieties and one Japonica variety were resistant to two races; K1 and K2. One Tongil-type variety and twenty-eight Japonica varieties were resistant to the three races; K1, K2, and K3. Fourteen Tongil-type varieties and one Japonica variety were resistant to four races; K1, K2, K3, and K3a. A number of Tongil-type varieties showed broad spectrum resistance to four races, while a number of Japonica varieties showed broad spectrum resistance to three races; K1, K2, and K3.
From the cross Tongil$^2//IR833/IR1317$ glutinouse rice lines wx 126 were bred. Some of these lines were earlier than standard variety and later than glutinous check variety. Some of them yielded as much as standard variety and showed better resostances to blast, stripe deseases and smaller brown plant hopper than standard variety. Differential tolerance of rice varieties, Tongil and Mangyung(or Milsung) varieties, against herbicides combined with Simetryne was investigated by the rate of application in 4 places; Jeonju, Gwangju, Iri and Milyang, whose soil textures were Lic, Sic, CL and Lic respectively. The results are summarized as follows: 1) Jeonju a. Initial crop injury At the rate of 2kg/10a prod. no initial crop injury was caused(both to Mangyung and Tongil varieties) on light clay soil, even when treated at high temperature of $30^{\circ}C$ and above. Crop injury was first caused at 3kg/l0a prod. to Tongil variety and the damage increased in proportion to the increase of application rate, while no crop injury was caused to Mangyung variety even at high rate of 5kg/l0a prod. b. Yield Tongil variety: Under high temperature condition in a vinyl house no statistical difference was observed between treated and hand weeding plot at the rates of 3kg/l0a prod. and below. Under air temperature conditions no statistical difference was observed between treated and hand weeding plot at the rates of 4kg/l0a prod. and below. Mangyung variety: No statistical difference was observed between treated and hand weeding plot at the rates of 5kg/l0a prod. and below both under air and high temperature conditions. 2) Gwangju a. Initial crop injury Although almost the same tendency as in Jeonju was observed, a little lighter crop injury was observed in general in Gwangju than in Jeonju at the time of application. And so, no crop injury was caused to Tongil variety until 4kg/l0a prod. and above. b. Yield Tongil variety: No statistical difference was observed between treated and hand weeding plot at 4kg/l0a prod. and below. Mangyung variety: No statistical difference was observed between treated and hand weeding plot at 4kg/l0a prod. and below. 3) Iri No crop injury was caused both to Tongil and Mangyung varieties at 4kg/l0a prod. and below. Also, no reduction of grain yield was observed. 4) Milyang A little lighter crop injury was observed in general. No crop injury was caused to Milsung variety at 5kg/l0a prod. ; Only a slight crop injury was caused to Tongil variety. Yield: No statistical difference was observed between treated and hand weeding plot both of Tongil and Milsung varieties even at 5kg/l0a prod. and below.
Seedlings of Nongbaek representing strong cold tolerant variety of rice plant, Jinheung of medium variety and Tongil of weak variety were used respectively for the present study. These seedlings were water cultured in phytotron which maintained at the daytime and night temperature of 30-$25^{\circ}C$, 20-2$0^{\circ}C$, 20-15$^{\circ}C$ and 15-1$0^{\circ}C$. The growth rate of plant height, tillering rate, increase in dry weight and absorption pattern of important mineral nutrients at their early growth stage under each temperature conditions were observed. Generally, it appeared that Nongbaek was more active in the growth of plant height than Jinheung, and Jinheung was more active than Tongil under low temperature condition. The tillering rate of these three varieties was equally rapid while it was decreased in the order of weak cold tolerant variety, such as Tongil, Jinheung and Nongbaek as the temperature declined gradually. The dry weigh tincreasing curve showed almost the same pattern in the varieties at the treatment of each temperature. Under low temperature conditions, Nongbaek showed higher absorption rate of N per dry weight and higher absorption amount of per plant body, Jinheung followed and Tongil was the lowest. The absorption amount of P2O5 increased in the top part compared with the roots as temperature rose and decreased as temperature declined. There seemed to be no difference of absorption among the varieties which have different cold tolerance each other. Under low temperature the absorption rate of K per dry weight was high, as a whole, especially Nongbaek was markedly higher than the other two. The absorption rate of Ca, Mg and Fe was also equally high in all varieties under low temperature and Nongbaek showed a more absorptive tendency in the absorption amount under low temperature.
Screenhouse experiments were conducted to find out the varietal difference in ovipositional preference of the striped rice borer moths (Chilo suppressalis W.) on eight varieties of rice and its association with several plant morphological characters. The results indicated the strong preference of the moths for ovipositing on several varieties. The varieties Tongil (Suweon 213-1), Yushin, Jinheung and TKM-6 had comparatively more egg masses and more eggs than the varieties IR-26, IR-747, Rexoro and Juckna. The strong ovipositional preference of moths of Tongil, as compared to the resistant variety TKM-6 and the susceptible variety Rexoro, was. always consistent in this study whenever the number of tillers were uniformed and each two varieties were paired. It could be concluded that the moths definitely preferred Tongil among the test varieties. There was not any significant correlations between the ovipositional preference and the plant characters; such as number of tillers per plant, plant height, external diameter of stem, and size of leaf. The cause of strong perference of the moths for ovipositing on short type varieties Tongil and Yushin were still suspectable.
In order to eluciate the factors affecting the injury caused by simetryne(2-methyl thio-4,6-bis(ethylamino)-S-triazine) to rice plants of Tongil variety(Indica ${\times}$ Japonica), the leaching properties of simetrynes, compared with Japonica varieties, Mangyeung and Sadominori were investigated. Bioassay technique and $^{14}C$-simetryne for leaching study and bioassay for the characteristics of the rice plants were employed. The leaching range of simetryne was very narrow regardless of soil types under upland soil conditions but it increased little in Silt clay soil and greatly in Sandy loam soil under flooded soil conditions. The amount of the roots of Tongil Jas a little more than that of Mangyeung and the roots of the Tongil mostly distributed near the surface soil while those of Mangyeung rooted deep into the soil. The foliage area and the rate of transpiration of Tongil were larger and greater than those of Mangyeung by 1.3 times and 1.65 times, respectively. The sensitivity of Tongil to simetryne was about 3 times larger than that of Sadominori in water culture.
