A Study on Hygiene and Skin Pruritus in Rural Elderly People (농어촌 복합 섬 지역 노인의 위생습관과 피부 소양감)

  • Purpose: This study was done to develop data for a hygiene promotion program for elders living on rural islands. Method: Self-administered questionnaires were used to collect data. Results: Most of the elders reported brushed their teeth and washing their faces twice a day. For other types of washing, 98.8% of reported washing their hands after the toilet and 22.8% reported washing their anus after defecation. Most of the elders reported changing their underwear two to three times a month and cutting their nails more than four times a month. Itchiness was reported by 24%. There were significant differences according to age for teeth brushing, face washing, shampooing, bathing, washing hands after the toilet, and cutting nails. According to sex, there were significant differences in teeth brushing, face washing, washing hands after using the toilet, washing anus after defecation, changing underwear, cutting nails, and feeling itchy. The elders showed significant differences in bathing, changing underwear, and cutting nails according to subjective economic status. They showed significant differences in teeth brushing and changing underwear when they lived with their families. Conclusion: In order to develop a proper hygiene promotion program for the elderly, their age, sex, and physical condition should be considered as well as their environmental, economical, and geographical condition.

A Study for Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Wetlands to Eliminate Toilet Bacteria

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate whether wetland has antimicrobial activity on pathogenic bacteria in the toilet bowl. Research design, data and methodology: Air-dried mud obtained from "Jilmoe Bog" wetland was packed and dissolved in the autoclaved saline. Antimicrobial susceptibility was assessed against three Gram-negative bacteria using disk diffusion method and broth dilution method. Identification of specific bacterium presented in wetland supernatant was performed using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Results: Incubation of three Gram-negative bacteria with wetland supernatant inhibited bacterial growth of the bacteria, otherwise increased prevalence of specific bacterium. It was confirmed that Pseudomonas putida was presented in wetland supernatant. Conclusions: The results presented in this study might provide the possibility to utilize wetland supernatant as a bioremediation of toilet bowl bacteria.

Survey of proper practice of toothbrushing place in elementary school, middle school and high school in some part of Gyeonggi-Do (경기도 일부 초·중·고등학교의 바른양치실천 및 양치시설실태)

  • Objectives : This study is designed to survey of proper practice of toothbrushing place in elementary school, middle school and high school in some part of Gyeonggi-Do, and will be utilized for toothbrushing place management. Methods : It was randomly selected, 8 elementary schools, 6 middle school and 6 high school in Gyeonggi-do, surveyed whole students. Survey duration was from May 11th to May 20th in 2011. The surveying paper was consisted of questions of general characteristics, right practice of toothbrushing and toothbrushing after lunch etc. It was done under teacher's control. The Data was analyzed with SPSSWIN 18.0. Results : Students did toothbrushing 2 times/day. It wasn't done by Elementary students of 56.3%, middle school students of 68.5%, high school students of 39.3%. It was dominant reason for no brushing that Carrying toothbrush and toothpaste was annoying. When students washed their hands and rinsed their mouth, they used toilet facuet in over than 90% schools. Satisfaction ratio was very low in elementary, middle, high schools. 60% of students wanted to get mouth rinsing place in each school or separately nearby toilet. Conclusions : It was thought by 60% students of elementary, middle, high school that toothbrushing after meals was most important activity. But It was not well done after lunch. When whole student did toothbrushing together, they couldn't use mouthrinsing place comfortablely. There were no keeping places for toothbrushes. So more attention should be payed to make plenty mouthrinsing places and manage them well.

A Study on the Food Hygiene Attitude and Personal Hygiene Management of Students by high school type in Chungcheongnam-do (충남지역 고등학교 유형별 학생들의 식품위생 태도와 개인 위생관리에 관한 연구)

  • This study aimed to provide basic data for the development of education programs on food hygiene attitude and personal hygiene management of high school students by type of school. From July 16 to October 15, 2015, questionnaires were distributed to 30 students per grade at 16 high schools in Chungcheongnam-do, and a total of 1214 questionnaires (excluding unrecurring and insufficient questionnaires) were processed using SPSS (ver 18.0). As a result, academic high school students answered more checking food's shelf life when they bought it in the store(3.79, 3.60), not eating the cooked and heated food after keeping without heating(2.85, 2.98), and storing food in the refrigerator in accordance with its characteristics(3.90, 3.76) than specialized high school students. Academic high school students were found to be more careful than specialized high school students, to wash hands before meals(3.66, 3.52), after went to toilet(4.30, 3.95), in the right way(3.63 and 3.45), and to go around less during meal time(2.19, 2.43) and to go to the toilet less often during meal time(2.28, 2.47). In this study, academic and specialized high school students showed significant differences in food hygiene attitude and personal hygiene management, and academic high school students had significantly better food hygiene attitude and personal hygiene control than specialized high school students. but still need to be improved. Therefore, it is suggested that education on food hygiene attitude and personal hygiene management should be strengthened according to the type of school.

A Comparative Study on the Food Hygiene Attitude and Personal Hygiene Management of High School Students according to Gender (고등학생의 식품위생태도와 개인위생관리의 성별에 따른 비교연구)

  • This study aimed to provide basic data for the development of education programs on food hygiene attitude and personal hygiene management of high school students according to gender. From July 16 to October 15, 2015, questionnaires were distributed to 30 students per grade at 16 high schools in Chungcheongnam-do, and a total of 1,214 questionnaires(excluding uncollected and insufficient questionnaires) were processed using SPSS(ver 18.0). According to the study, female students more checked the expiration date for food(3.78, 3.57), ate stored food without heating(2.83, 3.02) and stored it according to the characteristics(3.92, 3.72) than male students. On the other hand, male students answered they looked at food packaging more closely(3.34, 3.22), and always used personal plates when they ate(3.43, 3.32), than female students. Female students were always better at hand washing after went to toilet(4.25, 3.94), used individual cups when using water purifiers(3.45, 3.32), kept nails cleaner(3.61, 3.49), and went around(2.14, 2.53) and went to toilet during meals than male students(2.22, 2.57). Boys answered they were better at hand washing before meals(3.64, 3.50), with right way(3.58, 3.46), and covering with a tissue, handkerchief or sleeve when they coughed(3.55, 3.37) than girls. In this study, high school students showed significant differences between gender in food hygiene attitude and personal hygiene management, with different areas requiring improvement. Therefore, this study suggests the need for education on food hygiene attitude and personal hygiene management differentiated according to gender.

A study on handwashing of health science college students (보건계열 대학생의 손 씻기 실태)

  • Objectives : The objectives of this study were to investigate the handwashing and practice of health science college students and emphasize the importance of handwashing and infection control precaution to the students. Methods : This study was conducted by 586 health science college students through self-reported survey. All data were analyzed using SPSS/PC 13.0 program. Results : 1. Female students washed hands more frequently(7 times per day) than male students(6 times per day). Female students washed hands for 39 seconds in the meanwhile male students washed hands for 28 seconds. 2. Handwashing after using toilet accounted for 79.6% and 72.0% in female and male students, respectively. 3. Most of the handwashing was performed with faucet water (82.1%). The others were tepid water (54.3%), running water (98.1%) and water with soap bar (66.7%). 4. The reason for not practicing handwashing was due to annoyingness (36.3%). Conclusions : Health science college students' tended to wash their hands frequently. However, there existed a gap between the handwashing perception and practice in the previous reports because the observed practice was different from self-estimated perception.

A Study on the Actual Condition of Food Hygiene Safety Awareness, Food Hygiene Attitude, and Personal Hygiene Control of Male and Female college students in South Chungcheong Province (충남지역 남녀 대학생의 식품위생안전인식, 식품위생태도, 개인위생관리에 대한 실태조사 연구)

  • This study aims to provide basic data for food hygiene safety education by surveying the status of food hygiene safety awareness, attitude, and personal hygiene control of male and female college students in South Chungcheong Province, Republic of KOREA. From May 16 to June 30, 2019, 1,048 survey responses were collected at H University and analyzed statistically using SPSS 23.0. This study found males believed agricultural, livestock, and fisheries products (3.37, 3.08), and processed foods (3.40, 3.00) to be significantly safer, and information on food safety was easier to obtain (3.40, 3.00) than females. They were also more confident in choosing safe food (3.30, 2.97), than females. This indicates that males are more aware of food hygiene safety than females. On the other hand, females responded that they checked the expiration date (4.11, 4.40) and stored food according to characteristics (4.08, 4.30) than males, wash their hands after using the toilet(4.23 4.53) than males. This suggests that females were more aware of food hygiene attitudes and personal hygiene control than males. According to this study, college students' awareness of food hygiene safety and attitude, personal hygiene control showed a gender gap. Males had higher food hygiene safety awareness than females, but their awareness of food hygiene attitudes and personal hygiene control was lower. This suggests that differentiated food hygiene safety education is needed considering these gender differences.

The Study about Installation Condition of Convenient Facilities on Toilets for the Disabled in Public Libraries -Focused On the Public Libraries in Daegu- (피공공도서관의 장애인화장실 편의시설 설치실태에 관한 연구 -대구광역시 공공도서관을 중심으로-)

  • In view of the fact that modern society has a range of origins causing disability, the population of acquired crippled is escalating. Hence, it is obligatory to facilitate every visitors can utilize facility equitably because public libraries are being changed to compounded service area. Particularly, it is urgent to manage space planning and accommodation by considerate the requirement traits of disabled who are a susceptible social group about knowledge information. This study analysis installation of toilet, the inevitable factor of hygiene facility, for disabled equipped in four different public libraries in Daegu with related on the standards of establishment for prolonged stay through advanced research and legislation connected on handicapped. This study provides foundation data to establish construction plan for disabled to alleviate inconvenience of taking service of public library, and to compose satisfying hygiene facility.

A Study on the Hand Hygiene of Food Handlers of Food Court and Cafeteria in University Campus (대학 구내 휴게음식점 종사자의 손 위생관리에 관한 연구)

  • This study was performed to investigate awareness of hand washing, hand washing behavior, and the levels of indicator microorganisms on hands of food handlers who work in the food court and cafeteria of a university campus. The three methods used were questionnaire survey by interview, direct observation in restrooms, and microbiological examination according to the Food Code of Korea. A positive attitude toward hand washing compliance was reported by the responded food handlers; however, improper hand washing and poor hand hygiene of the food handlers were recognized by the unnoticed direct observation. Significant differences were found between the questionnaire survey and the direct observation (p < 0.05) in hand washing compliance after using the toilet, duration of hand washing, use of hand washing agent, washing different parts of the hands, hand-drying method, temperature of water, and method of turning off the water. Samples taken from their hands before work showed higher level of standard plate count, total and fecal coliforms, and Escherichia coli than those taken after washing with water. After washing hands with antiseptic liquid soap, the bacterial populations including Staphylococcus aureus on hands were dramatically reduced. This study indicates that there is a remarkable difference between the food handlers' awareness of hand washing and their hand washing behavior. Poor hand washing compliance and hand hygiene were indicated by the positive results of total and fecal coliforms, E. coli, and S. aureus on hands of some food handlers. The findings of this study suggest that the hand hygiene of the food handlers need to be improved. More training/education on hand washing and hand hygiene of the food handlers should be necessary.

A Study on the Hand Washing Awareness and Practices of Food-service Employees and the Load of Index Microorganisms on the Hands (조리종사자의 손 씻기 의식과 실천 및 손의 지표미생물 오염도에 관한 연구)

  • Hand-washing is one of the major factors in personal hygiene and public health. This study was undertaken to investigate the hygienic behavior of food-service employees, focusing on awareness of hand washing, hand washing practices, and the load of index microorganisms (aerobic plate count, total and fecal coliforms, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus) on the hands of food-service employees. A questionnaire survey completed by direct interview, direct observation of restrooms by the researcher and trained observers, and microbiological examination according to the Food Code of Korea were carried out. In the survey, a positive attitude toward hand washing compliance was reported; however, improper hand washing and poor hand hygiene of the food-service employees were seen under direct observation. Significant differences (p<0.05) were found between the questionnaire survey and the direct observations in hand washing compliance after using the toilet, duration of hand washing, use of hand washing agents, use of hand washing tools, washing of different parts of the hands, hand-drying method, temperature of water, and method of turning off the water. Samples taken from employees' hands before washing showed higher levels of bacteria than those taken during work and/or after washing (p<0.05).
