  • Chelated titanium alkoxides are hydrolysed showly and stable enough to prepare multicomponent gels of titania without its precipitation due to the fast hydrolysis of Ti alkoxide. The alkoxy groups of chelated titanium alkoxide are hydrolysed as fast as that of titanium alkoxide but the chelating groups are stable even in aqueous solution. The chelating groups showed different rates of hydrolysis in aqueous ammonia solution and water added one. Those rates were monitored with UV-VIS spectrophotometer by using their unique absorption bands before and after hydrolysis.

  • The aim of this paper is to prepare metal/ceramic composite ultrafiltration membranes by coating inorganic particles on a metallic hollow fiber filter. The diameter and the pore size of the filter was 2.0 mm and $2{\sim}8{\mu}m$. The metal/ceramic composite ultrafiltration membranes were obtained by a coating process of silica and titania sols on top of the metallic filter. For this purpose the method of fast freeze drying and dip-coating were used. It was found that the pore size of the membrane was about 50 nm from SEM and PMI characterization. The pore size was controlled by changing the size of the particles, sintering period and temperature.

  • The polymeric titania sol was prepared via partial hydrolysis of titanium isopropoxide and its characteristics were investigated. The effect of solvent, catalyst and water content on the sol stability was investigated. The shear viscosities of sol solution at different temperatures were measured to determine the gel time. Employing the spin coating technique, optically clear and transparent titanium oxide thin film was fabricated. Even after doped with second-order nonlinear optical(NL0) active monomers, the film quality was maintained very homogeneous. The film was corona-poled under 3~ 5kV at 50~$100^{\circ}C$ range. The electro-optic coefficient, $r_{33}$ was measured to be 1.5~5pm/V using the wavelength, 632.8nm from He-Ne laser.

  • Titania-supported chromium oxides with different loadings have been embarked in catalytic oxidation of trichloroethylene (TCE) to inquire association of the formation of crystalline $Cr_2O_3$ with catalytic performances. A better activity in the oxidative TCE decomposition at chosen temperatures was represented when chromium oxides ($CrO_x$) had been dispersed on pure anatase-type $TiO_2$ (DT51D) rather than on phase-mixed and sulfur-contained ones such as P25 and DT51. The extent of TCE oxidation at temperatures below $350^{\circ}C$ was a strong function of $CrO_x$ content in $CrO_x$/DT51D $TiO_2$, and a noticeable point was that the catalyst has two optimal $CrO_x$ loadings in which the lowest $T_{50}$ and $T_{90}$ values were measured for the TCE oxidation. This behavior in the activity with respect to $CrO_x$ amounts could be associated with the formation of crystalline $Cr_2O_3$ on the support surface, that is less active for the oxidation reaction, and an easier mobility of the surface oxygen existing in noncrystalline $CrO_x$ species with higher oxidation states, such as $Cr_2O_8$ and $CrO_3$.

  • A series of $CeO_2-TiO_2$ composite samples with different Ce/Ti molar ratios were prepared by the paper template. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to confirm a face-centered cubic lattice of $CeO_2$ with Ce/Ti =8:2 or 9:1 and a two phase mixture of anatase titania and face-centered cubic ceria with Ce/Ti = 7 : 3. The field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) results suggest that the products are micron braid structures consisting of fibers with diameters in a range of $1-6{\mu}m$ and lengths of several hundred micrometers. $N_2$ absorption-desorption testing shows that the composite at Ce/Ti molar fraction of 8 : 2 has the largest BET surface area (about $81m^2{\cdot}g^{-1}$). Compared to the pure $CeO_2$ sample, the composites show superior catalytic activity for $H_2$ reduction and CO oxidation. For the micron braid structure $CeO_2-TiO_2$ composite (Ce/Ti = 8 : 2), due to the high surface area and the solid solution with appropriate $Ti^{4+}$ incorporation, the CO conversion at about $280^{\circ}C$ was above 50% and at $400^{\circ}C$ was 100%.

  • Graphene oxide (GO)-titania composites have emerged as an attractive heterogeneous photocatalyst that can enhance the photocatalytic activity of $TiO_2$ nanoparticles owing to their potential interaction of electronic and adsorption natures. Accordingly, $TiO_2$-GO mixtures were synthesized in this study using a simple chemical mixing process, and their heterogeneous photocatalytic activities were investigated to determine the degradation of airborne organic pollutants (benzene, ethyl benzene, and o-xylene (BEX)) under different operational conditions. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results demonstrated the presence of GO for the $TiO_2$-GO composites. The average efficiencies of the $TiO_2$-GO mixtures for the decomposition of each component of BEX determined during the 3-h photocatalytic processes were 26%, 92%, and 96%, respectively, whereas the average efficiencies of the unmodified $TiO_2$ powder were 3%, 8%, and 10%, respectively. Furthermore, the degradation efficiency of the unmodified $TiO_2$ powder for all target compounds decreased during the 3-h photocatalytic processes, suggesting a potential deactivation even during such a short time period. Two operational conditions (air flow entering into the air-cleaning devices and the indoor pollution levels) were found to be important factors for the photocatalytic decomposition of BEX molecules. Taken together, these results show that a $TiO_2$-GO mixture can be applied effectively for the purification of airborne organic pollutants when the operating conditions are optimized.
