This study aimed to analyze spray characteristics and the ambient flow field in the mixture preparation state of the premixed combustion stage. It is very important to understand the spray characteristics and the fuel injection conditions in direct injection diesel engine because the emission gas compositions from diesel engines are related to spray formation processes of the premixed combustion stage. The numerical simulation was performed using the STAR-CD which is a commercial CFD code. Computed results of the transient high pressure diesel spray were compared with experimental results of the same spray injection condition in the constant volume chamber. The results show that spray patterns of numerical simulation agree with this experimental results comparatively.
This paper describes the characteristics of injection rate and macroscopic behavior of fuel spray injected from common-rail type diesel injectors with different nozzle geometries. The injection rates according to the nozzle geometries were measured at different energizing duration of the injector solenoid and injection pressure by using the Bosch's injection rate meter based on the pressure variation in the tube. The spray behaviors injected from the different nozzles were visualized using the spray visualization system composed of an Ar-ion laser, an ICCD camera, and a synchronization system at various injection and ambient pressures. It is revealed that VCO nozzle has higher spray tip velocity at the early stage of injection duration and wider spray cone angle than the mini-sac nozzles. Also the spray cone angle is increased with the increase of nozzle diameter.

The main objective of this work is to investigate the effect of ambient conditions on the spray behavior and spray characteristics of high-pressure fuel injector. For this purpose, the effects of ambient pressure and temperature on the spray characteristics have been studied by applying the analysis of visualization system and phase Doppler particle analyzer. In this experiment, the visualization of spray behavior was performed under various ambient gas conditions and injection parameters such as gas temperature, ambient pressure, injection pressure of injector, and axial distance from the nozzle tip. Based on the investigation results, the spray tip penetration and spray width decrease with the increase of ambient gas pressure in the spray chamber. The effects of the spray parameters on the microscopic characteristics of gasoline spray were discussed.

The energy transferred on drill rods by dynamic impact mainly determines the penetration depth for in-situ tests. In this study, the dynamic response and transferred energy of drill rods are determined from the frequency of the stress waves. AW-type drill rods of lengths 1 to 3 m are prepared, and strain gauges and an accelerometer are installed at the head and tip of the connected rods. The drill rods are hung on strings, allowing free vibration, and then impacted by a pendulum hammer with fixed potential energy. Increasing the rod length L increases the wave roundtrip time (2L/c, where c is the wave velocity), and hence the transferred energy at the rod head. At the rod tip, the first velocity peak is higher than the first force peak because a large and tensile stress wave is reflected, and the transferred energy converges to zero. The resonant frequency increases with rod length in the waveforms measured by the strain gauges, and fluctuates in the waveforms measured by the accelerometer. In addition, the dynamic response and transferred energy are perturbed when the cutoff frequency is lower than 2 kHz. This study implies that the resonant frequency should be considered for the interpretation of transferred energy on drill rods.

Shear wave velocity($V_S$), which can be obtained using various seismic tests, has been emphasized as representative geotechnical dynamic characteristic mainly for seismic design and seismic performance evaluation in the engineering field. For the application of conventional geotechnical site investigation techniques to geotechnical earthquake engineering, standard penetration tests(SPT) and piezocone penetration tests(CPTu) together with a variety of borehole seismic tests were performed at many sites in Korea. Through statistical modeling of the in-situ testing data, in this study, the correlations between $V_S$ and geotechnical in-situ penetrating data such as blow counts(N value) from SPT and piezocone penetrating data such as tip resistance ($q_t$), sleevefriction($f_s$), and pore pressure ratio($B_q$) were deduced and were suggested as an empirical method to determine $V_S$. Despite the incompatible strain levels of the conventional geotechnical penetration tests and the borehole seismic tests, it is shown that the suggested correlations in this study are applicable to the preliminary estimation of $V_S$ for Korean soil layers.

The pupose of this study is to measure droplet size and velocity simultaneously for a transient diesel fuel spray in a quiescent chamber at atmospheric temperature and pressure. Generally, diesel combustion phenomena is mainly governed by characteristics of injection system and fuel spray. Therefore we need to clarify these characteristics for developing more economical diesel systems. In this study, correlation between droplet size and velocity was measured at downstream distance from nozzle. Governing parameters are pump speed and fuel quantity for the detailed nature in this transient diesel fuel spray. It is observed effect to the droplet size and velocity distribution. Velocity(peak, mean, rms), number density and droplet size were investigated simulaneously using PDA in the spray. Various results are presented to illustrate the effects of operation factors and correlation between the droplet diameter and velocity.
In this study, an experimental investigation on the effects of the pressure ratio on the wall-impingement spray characteristics of nitrogen gas using a compressed natural gas (CNG) injector was conducted. The transient development of the impingement spray was recorded by a high speed camera with Z-type Schlieren visualization method. The spray behavior under various pressure ratio conditions were analyzed. The experimental results showed that the pressure ratio has positive effect on the development of spray wall-impingement. The effects of the above factor were evaluated in a constant volume chamber at atmospheric conditions. The data from test showed that, with the increase of the pressure ratio, the spray tip penetration (STP) quickly increases before the impingement and gradually increases after the impingement. Additionally, the spray velocity first increases and then sharply decreases on regardless of the injection pressure level. As the spray spreading angle increases, spray area and volume increases rapidly with the increase in STP at the beginning of injection, and finally entered a stable range, has a great correlation with the increase of pressure ratios.
This paper is intended to analyze the macroscopic behavior and transient atomization characteristics of the high-pressure gasoline injector in direct-injection gasoline engine. The global spray behavior of fuel injector was visualized by shadowgraph technique. Time-resolved droplet axial and radial velocity components and droplet diameter were measured at many probe positions in both axial and radial directions by a two-component phase Doppler particle analyzer (PDPA). In order to obtain the influence of fuel injection pressure, the macroscopic visualization and experiment of particle measurement on the fuel spray were investigated at 3,5 and 7 MPa of injection pressure under different surrounding pressure in the spray chamber. The results of this work show that the fuel injection pressure of gasoline injector in GDI engine has influence upon the mean droplet diameter, mean velocity of spray droplet, the spray tip penetration, and spray width under the elevated ambient pressure.

In this paper, the spray atomization characteristics of a gasoline direct-injection injector were investigated experimentally and numerically. To visualize the developing spray process, a laser sheet method with a Nd :YAG laser was utilized. The microscopic atomization characteristics such as the droplet size and velocity distribution were also obtained by using a phase Doppler particle analyzer system at the 5 ㎫ of injection pressure. With the experiments, the calculations of spray atomization were conducted by using the KIVA code with the LISA-DDB breakup model. Based on the agreement with the experimental results, the prediction accuracy of LISA-DDB breakup model was investigated in terms of the spray shapes, spray tip penetration, SMD distribution, and axial mean velocity. The results of this study provides the macroscopic and microscopic characteristics of the spray atomization, and prediction accuracy of the LISA-DDB model.
In this study, numerical and experimental analysis on the spray atomization characteristics of a GDI injector is performed. For numerical approach, four hybrid models that are composed of primary and secondary breakup model are considered. Concerning the primary breakup, a conical sheet disintegration model and LISA model are used. The secondary breakup models are made based on the DDB model and RT model. The global spray behavior is also visualized by the shadowgraph technique and local Sauter mean diameter and axial mean velocity are measured by using phase Doppler particle analyzer Based on the comparison of numerical and experimental results, it is shown that good agreement is obtained in terms of spray developing process and spray tip penetration at the all hybrid models. However, the hybrid breakup models show different prediction of accuracy in the cases of local SMD and the spatial distribution of breakup.
