Background and Objectives Tinnitus, a common complaint of workers who are exposed to noise, can cause substantial negative effects on the quality of life of these workers. The aim of this study was to analyze the characteristics of tinnitus in patients with noise-induced hearing loss and the relationship between tinnitus and the duration of noise exposure. Subjects and Method Thirty-three patients with subjective tinnitus and noise-induced hearing loss were included in this study. Tinnitus questionnaire, Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) and audiological examinations were investigated according to the duration of noise exposure. Results There was a significant correlation between the tinnitus loudness and the duration of noise exposure. Patients who had longer periods of noise exposure had a louder tinnitus and higher THI score. However, there is no significant correlation between the characteristics of tinnitus and aging process. Conclusion The duration of noise exposure influences the loudness and distress of tinnitus. An awareness of tinnitus should be considered as part of hearing conservation program.

Objectives This case study reports patient diagnosed as Soyangin Hyunggyeok yeoljeung with tinnitus, headache and sleep discomfort after Subarachnoid Hemorrhage(SAH) had treated with HyungBangSabaek-San.Methods The patient suffering from tinnitus, sleep discomfort had taken HyungBangSabaek-San from the first to the end three times a day. We measure tinnitus by Tinnitus Handicap Inventory(THI) and observe symptoms change using Visual Anlaogue Scale(VAS).Results The symptoms had been steadily decreased and quality of life had increased also. Headache and constipation had been improved in a week and tinnitus and chest discomfort had decreased next week. At last, patient complained symptoms slightly.Conclusions HyungBangSabaek-San a is treatment of Soyangin Hyunggyeok yeoljeung and may be considered as a treatment of tinnitus.

1. Objective: The aim of this study was to report significant improvement of tinnitus and insomnia after treatment with Cheongsimyeonja-tang in a Taeeumin patient with Idiopathic Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss(SSHL) that accompanied with Tinnitus. 2. Method: We measured the hearing recovery. For diagnosis on this case, pure tone audiometry was used. The degree of improvement was evaluated by Siegel's Criteria. Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) and Tinnitus Handicap Inventory(THI) were also used to assess tinnitus objectively. 3. Result: There was no improvement in pure tone audiometry by Siegel's Criteria. However, VAS score was decreased from 10 to 1 and THI score was also decreased from 74 to 48. 4. Conclusion: A patient with SSHL, who has little possibility of recovery of hearing loss, was treated with Cheongsimyeonja-tang in a short period and significant improvement in tinnitus and insomnia was observed. We consider that consistent treatment of Cheongsimyeonja-tang can contribute to improve the hearing loss.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to report the combination effect of Chuna manipulation and warm needle acupuncture for a case of obstinate chronic tinnitus. Methods : We applied Danmuji Anchu Tracton technique, lateral pterygoid Chuna and warm needle acupuncture at SI19 once a day for 2 weeks. Visual analogue scale(VAS) was used for the intensity of tinnitus and tinnitus handicap inventory(THI) was evaluated. Results : VAS was improved from 6 to 2 in right ear, 4 to 1 in left ear after the treatment. THI was also improved from 54 to 34 after the treatmemt. Conclusions : The combined therapy of Chuna manipulation and warm needle acupuncture can be used for chronic tinnitus.

Objective The case report showed that sudden hearing loss and tinnitus after trigeminal schwannoma surgery were improved with Yeoldahansotang-gamibang. Method The patient was diagnosed with Taeeumin interior heat (Ganyeol) disease based on the original symptoms of Taeeumin. He was treated with herbal medicine and acupuncture treatment. Puretone audiometry (PTA), speech audiometry, tinnitus handicap inventory (THI) and the original symptoms were investigated before and after the treatment. Results Right side PTA score was significantly reduced, speech audiometry was improved in speech reception threshold (SRT), word recognition score (WRS) and most comfortable level (MCL) and THI score decreased from 40 to 0, which showed normalizing hearing function. And the patient revealed improvements in sleeping, digestion, stooling, perspiration and facial sensation after treatment. Conclusion This study suggests that Yeoldahansotang-gamibang is effective on sudden hearing loss and tinnitus after surgery by correcting the imbalanced energy of Taeeumin.

Objectives : The primary purpose of present study is to evaluate the effect of a supplement of Bee Larva on tinnitus. the second is to comparatively evaluate safety of this supplement. Methods : Among those patients who visited Semyung Oriental Medical Center from January 11st, 2010 to February 20th, 2010, we screened 45 patients considered suitable for this study after some examinations and consent of the patients. they were devided into 2 groups. Group A took 5 tablets of this supplement everyday for 4 weeks, group B, placebo, in the same way. for 4 weeks, we checked changes in intensity, duration, extent of tinnitus on daily life and sleep and THI(Tinnitus Handicap Inventory) score. to evaluate safety of this supplement, adverse events, assessment of vital sign, hematologic examination were recorded. Result : Through 4 weeks of the clinical trial, we found that this supplement is effective on tinnitus and it improves intensity, duration and extent (its influence on daily life) of tinnitus, influence of tinnitus on sleep and THI score more effectively than the placebo drug. Also, in the assessment of the safety of the study the supplement of bee Larva and placebo drug, there were no adverse events and side effects over the average which need treatment for it. Moreover, there were not any abnormal findings in change of blood pressure and hematologic examination. Conclusion : According to this experiment, we confirmed that the supplement of bee Larva can be used effectively and safely on tinnitus.

Background : Tinnitus is common disorder with many possible causes and a symptom of many different diseases but has no effective treatment. Most of tinnitus patients experience the disorder to a degree that their quality of life and productivity are impaired. Especially tinnitus accompanied hearing loss causes severe discomfort in patients. Objectives : 1. Through symptoms of tinnitus, we tried to find out the relationship of Heo-sil(虛實) and Zuang fu bian zheng(臟腑辨證) among tinnitus patients accompanied Hearing Loss. 2. By testing THI, we tried to evaluate the quality of life of tinnitus patients group and tried to compare the quality of life between high-narrow tone and low-wide tone tinnitus patients group. 3. In the future, this study was planned to help monitor the prognosis and determine the progress of treatment for tinnitus patients who also have hearing loss. Methods : 43 patients were recruited in this study who was ill with tinnitus accompanied hearing loss. They wrote out the questionnaire about tinnitus and the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory(THI). Results : 1. In tinnitus patients, there were more men than women accompanied hearing loss. The rate of visits was higher as the age increased. 2. Most of the patients who visited the hospital had sensitive hearing loss. 3. In high-narrow tone tinnitus group, phlegm fire congesting-type are more uncomfortable than spleen-stomach weakness-type. 4. In low-wide tone tinnitus group, liver qi depression was the most uncomfortable. Conclusions : The present study suggests that tinnitus pattern may be helpful in differentiating patients with tinnitus, and the effectiveness of treatment can be predicted through differentiation. Zuang fu bian zheng(臟腑辨證) and Distinguishing between Heo(虛) and Sil(實) is expected to have positive effects on tinnitus accompanied hearing loss treatment.

Objectives: This study reports on the efficacy of using Korean medical treatment with suspected Meniere's Disease. Methods: We treated a patient with suspected Meniere's disease using Korean medical treatments (herbal medicines, acupuncture, herbal acupuncture therapy). To evaluate the results, we used the visual analogue scale (VAS) to measure dizziness, tinnitus, ear fullness, and headache. The degree of tinnitus was also evaluated using the Korean Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (K-THI). The generic health status was evaluated using the European Quality of Life-5 Dimensions (EQ-5D) scale. Results: Improvements in the VAS and EQ-5D scale scores were observed after the treatments. The change in the K-THI scores showed that the patient's tinnitus handicap was relieved. Conclusions: The results of this case study suggest that Korean medicine therapies may be effective in the treatment of suspected Meniere's Disease.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to analyze the acupuncture and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation(TENS) for tinnitus to identify the trend, effectiveness and mechanism. Methods : Research studies related to objectives were gathered through Pubmed, RISS, KISS, KCI, OASIS with keywords such as 'Tinnitus', 'Autonomic', 'ANS', 'HRV', 'acupuncture', 'transcutaneous' and analyzed. Results : 4 studies were included. Acupuncture was used in 1 study and TENS was used in 3 studies. Tinnitus handicap inventory(THI), fMRI and 'heart rate and blood pressure' were used in 1 study each and heart rate variability(HRV) was used in 3 studies as evaluation tools. Each treatment showed a significant effect. Conclusions : Our findings indicate that acupuncture and TENS could be a potential therapy for tinnitus, however additional well designed RCT are required to establish high level of evidence.

Objectives : This study reports a 61-year-old man with sudden hearing loss and tinnitus whose symptoms improved remarkably after treatment with Korean medicine. Methods : The patient was treated with herbal medicine(gamisoyo-san, samul-tang gagambang, gongjindan, and yukmijihwang-hwan), acupuncture and moxibustion. Puretone audiometry(PTA), speech audiometry(SA), Korean tinnitus handicap inventory(K-THI), patient self-report, numeric rating scale(NRS) 11, and review of system(ROS) were performed. Results : After a month of treatment, PTA was improved from profound to mild and audiometric findings were improved in speech reception threshold and word recognition score. After 2 months of treatment, K-THI decreased from 92 to 28 and NRS 11 score decreased more than 6 in every item. Conclusions : These results demonstrate that Korean medicine could be effective sudden hearing loss and tinnitus.
