  • A numerical study on the flow over a square cylinder in the vicinity of a wall is conducted for different Couette-Poiseuille-based non-uniform flow with the non-dimensional pressure gradient P varying from 0 to 5. The non-dimensional gap ratio L (=$H^{\ast}/a^{\ast}$) is changed from 0.1 to 2, where $H^{\ast}$ is gap height between the cylinder and wall, and $a^{\ast}$ is the cylinder width. The governing equations are solved numerically through finite volume method based on SIMPLE algorithm on a staggered grid system. Both P and L have a substantial influence on the flow structure, time-mean drag coefficient ${\bar{C}}_D$, fluctuating (rms) lift coefficient ($C_L{^{\prime}}$), and Strouhal number St. The changes in P and L leads to four distinct flow regimes (I, II, III and IV). Following the flow structure change, the ${\bar{C}}_D$, $C_L{^{\prime}}$, and St all vary greatly with the change in L and/or P. The ${\bar{C}}_D$ and $C_L{^{\prime}}$ both grow with increasing P and/or L. The St increases with P for a given L, being less sensitive to L for a smaller P (< 2) and more sensitive to L for a larger P (> 2). A strong relationship is observed between the flow regimes and the values of ${\bar{C}}_D$, $C_L{^{\prime}}$ and St. An increase in P affects the pressure distribution more on the top surface than on bottom surface while an increase in L does the opposite.

  • This paper proposes symbol decoding schemes combined with channel estimation techniques for coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (COFDM) systems in fading channels. sThe proposed symbol decoding schemes are consisted of a symbol decoding technique and channel estimation techniques. The symbol decoding based on Viterbi algorithm is achieved by matching the length of branch word from encoder trellis to the codeword length of symbol candidate on decoder trellis. Three combination schemes are described and their error performances are compared. The first scheme is to combine a symbol decoding technique with a training channel estimation technique. The second scheme joins a decision directed channel estimation technique to the first scheme. The time varying channel transfer functions are tracked by the decision directed channel estimation technique and the channel transfer functions used in the symbol decoder are updated every COFDM symbol. Finally, In order to reduce the effect of additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) between adjacent subchannels, deinterleaved average channel estimation technique is combined. The error performances of the three schemes are significantly improved being compared with that of zero forcing equalizing schemes.

  • This paper presents a speech enhancement method using non-negative matrix factorization. In training phase, we can obtain each basis matrix from speech and specific noise database. After training phase, the noisy signal is separated from the speech and noise estimate using basis matrix in enhancement phase. In order to improve the performance, we model the change of encoding matrix from training phase to enhancement phase using independent Gaussian distribution models, and then use the constraint of the objective function almost same as that of the above Gaussian models. Also, we perform a smoothing operation to the encoding matrix by taking into account previous value. Last, we apply the Log-Spectral Amplitude type algorithm as gain function.

  • Background noise and room reverberation are two causes of degradation in speech in listening situations. Many algorithms developed to enhance reverberant speech. In this paper we propose a dereverberation method for enhancement of speech using modified the linear prediction(LP) residual in reverberant room condition. The proposed dereberberation method based on the fact that the signification excitation of the vocal tract system takes place at the instant of glottal closure in voiced speech. Our method used delay information form each sensor, and we need reverberant signals from 3 sensors. We obtain a new LP residual signal using modified IP residual combination which derived form weighting of the LP residual and the Hilbert transform of LP residual. The nature of the coherently added Hilbert envelop has several large amplitude spikes because of the effects of noise and reverberation. This residual of the clean speech is used to excite the time-varying all-pole filter to obtain the enhanced speech. We achieved simulation of proposed algorithm for performance analysis in reverberation environment. The proposed algorithm improves substantially the quality of reverberant speech.

  • In this paper, we compare the existing channel estimation technique for 4S (Ship to Ship, Ship to Shore) maritime communications under AWGN channel model, Rician fading channel model, and Rayleigh fading channel model respectively. In general, the received signal is corrupted by multipath and ISI (Inter Symbol Interference). The estimation of a time-varying multipath fading channel is a difficult task for the receiver. Its performance can be improved if an appropriate channel estimation filter is used. The simulation is performed in MATLAB. In this simulation, we use the popular estimation algorithms, LMS (Least Mean Square) and RLS (Recursive Least-Squares) are compared with respect to AWGN, Rician and Rayleigh channels.

  • A more applicable optimization model for extracting flutter derivatives of bridge decks is presented, which is suitable for time-varying weights for fitting errors and different lengths of vertical bending and torsional free vibration data. A stochastic search technique for searching the optimal solution of optimization problem is developed, which is more convenient in understanding and programming than the alternate iteration technique, and testified to be a valid and efficient method using two numerical examples. On the basis of the section model test of Sutong Bridge deck, the flutter derivatives are extracted by the stochastic search technique, and compared with the identification results using the modified least-square method. The Empirical Mode Decomposition method is employed to eliminate noise, trends and zero excursion of the collected free vibration data of vertical bending and torsional motion, by which the identification precision of flutter derivatives is improved.

  • In this paper, a theoretical and numerical study on bridge simultaneous damage detection procedure for identifying both the system parameters and input excitation mass, are presented. This method is called 'Adjoint Variable Method' which is an iterative gradient-based model updating method based on the dynamic response sensitivity. The main advantage of proposed method is inclusion of an analytical method to augment the accuracy and speed of the solution. Moving mass is a model which takes into account the inertia effects of the vehicle. This interaction model is a time varying system and proposed method is capable of detecting damage in this variable system. Robustness of proposed method is illustrated by correctly detection of the location and extension of predetermined single, multiple and random damages in all ranges of speed and mass ratio of moving vehicle. A comparison study of common sensitivity and proposed method confirms its efficiency and performance improvement in sensitivity-based damage detection methods. Various sources of errors including the effects of measurement noise and initial assumption error in stability of method are also discussed.

  • In this paper, we present the joint symbol detection and channel estimation for an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system in fading channels. The proposed methods are based on decision-directed channel estimation (DDCE) method and their symbol detection is achieved by using Viterbi algorithm. This Viterbi decision-directed channel estimation (VDDCE) method tracks time-varying channels and detects a maximum likelihood symbol sequence. Recursive Viterbi decision-directed channel estimation (RVDDCE) method based on VDDCE method is proposed to shorten the detecting depth. In this method, channel estimate and Viterbi processing are recursively performed every interval of training symbol. Also, average chann'el estimation (ACE) technique to reduce the effect of additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) is applied VDDCE method and RVDDCE method. These proposed methods arc demonstrated by computer simulation.

  • A brief description of the current technology (contact-start-stop) employed in most of today's hard disk drive is presented. The dynamics and head/disk interactions during a start/stop process are very complicated and no one has been able to accurately model the interactions. Thus, the head/disk interface that meets the start/stop durability and stiction requirements are always developed statistically. In arriving at a solution. many sets of statistical tests are run by varying several parameters. such as, the carbon overcoat thickness. lubricant thickness. disk surface roughness, etc. Consequently, the cost associated III developing an interface could be significant since the outcome is difficult to predict. An alternative method known as Load/Unload technology alters the problem set. such that. the start/stop performance can be designed in a predictable manner. Although this techno¬logy offers superior performance and significantly reduces statistical testing time, it also has some potential problems. However. contrary to the CSS technology. most of the problems can be solved by design and not by trial and error. One critical problem is that of head/disk contacts during the loading and unloading processes. These contact can cause disk and slider damage because the contacts are likely to occur at high disk speeds resulting in large friction forces. Use of glass substrate disks also may present problems if not managed correctly. Due to the low thermal conductivity of glass substrates. any head/disk contacts may result in erasure due to frictional heating of the head/disk interface. In spite of these and other potential problems. the advantage with L/UL system is that these events can be understood. analyzed. and solved in a deterministic manner.

  • In this paper, a recursive estimation algorithm for FIR systems is proposed using the 3rd and 4th order cumulants. To obtain the Overdetermined Recursive Instrumental Variable(ORIV) method type algorithm, we transform the 3'th and 4'th order cumulant relationship to a certain matrix form which is consist of only output data. From the matrix form, we induce the proposed algorithm procedure following the ORIV method. The proposed algorithm provides improved estimation accuracy with smaller data and can be applied to a time varying system as well. In addition, it reduces the estimation error due to the additive Gaussian noise compared to conventional 2'rd order based algorithms since it only uses higher than 2'rd order cumulant. Simulation results are presented to compare the performance with other HOS-based algorithms.
