Wavelet Transforms: Practical Applications in Power Systems

  • An application of wavelet analysis to power system transient generated signals is presented in this paper. With the time-frequency localisation characteristics embedded in wavelets, the time and frequency information of a waveform can be presented as a visualised scheme. This feature is very important for non-stationary signals analysis such as the ones generated from power system disturbances. Unlike the Fourier transform, the wavelet transform approach is more efficient in monitoring fault signals as time varies. For time intervals where the function changes rapidly, this method can zoom in on the area of interest for better visualisation of signal characteristics.

  • This paper addresses major issues in localising sound sources in space using the experimental data set of head-related responses in the time or frequency domain. They come from the technical realisation steps for implementing the convolution of HRIR's with sound sources, the cross-talk cancellation for transaural filtering, the matched time delay compensation, etc. in real, those technical matters seem to be minor because they can be realised in off-line signal processing schemes. This paper puts much emphasis on what we misunderstood about the sets of HRTF's or HRIR's, More specifcaily, the sets of HRTF's or HRIR's of course supply relevant information to sound localisation but include much useless 'rubbish' that have made for us to fail to put spatial image into real souno signals such as voices and music's. This paper proposes possible reasons for such failure and, furthermore, introduces detained subjects that should be challenged so as to resolve them.

코호넨 신경회로망과 웨이브릿 변환을 이용한 단기부하예측 (Short-term load forecasting using Kohonen neural network and wavelet transform)

  • This paper proposes a novel wavelet transform and Kohonen neural network based technique for short-time load forecasting of power systems. Firstly. Kohonen Self-organizing map(KSOM) is applied to classify the loads and then the Daubechies D2, D4 and D10 wavelet transforms are adopted in order to forecast the short-term loads. The wavelet coefficients associated with certain frequency and time localisation are adjusted using the conventional multiple regression method and then reconstructed in order to forecast the final loads through a four-scale synthesis technique. The outcome of the study clearly indicates that the proposed composite model of Kohonen neural network and wavelet transform approach can be used as an attractive and effective means for short-term load forecasting.

  • This paper proposes a novel wavelet transform based technique for prediction of System Marginal Price(SMP). In this paper, Daubechies D1(haar), D2, D4 wavelet transforms are adopted to predict SMP and the numerical results reveal that certain wavelet components can effectively be used to identify the SMP characteristics with relation to the system demand in electric power systems. The wavelet coefficients associated with certain frequency and time localisation are adjusted using the conventional multiple regression method and then reconstructed in order to predict the SMP on the next scheduling day through a five-scale synthesis technique. The outcome of the study clearly indicates that the proposed wavelet transform approach can be used as an attractive and effective means for the SMP forecasting.
