  • This paper compares the performances of cyclic delay diversity and phase rolling techniques for SC-FDE(Single Carrier with Frequency Domain Equalization) systems with multiple transmit antennas assuming time-flat and frequency-flat channels. In OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) systems generation of time varying channels using phase rolling can result in performance gains comparable to those of frequency-selective channels made by cyclic delay diversity However, in SC-FDE systems making time-selective channels may produce better results than creation of frequency-selective channels.

  • An optical network-on-chip(ONoC) architecture is emerging as a new paradigm for solving on-chip communication bottleneck. Recent studies on ONoC have been focusing on supporting the parallel transmission and avoiding path collisions using wavelength division multiplexing(WDM). However, since the maximum number of wavelengths, which a single waveguide can accommodate is limited by crosstalk and insertion loss. Therefore previous WDM studies based on incrementing the number of different wavelengths according to the number of nodes would be infeasible due to the implementation complexity. To solve such problems, we combined time division multiplexing(TDM) and wavelength-routed ONoC, along with an optimized channel allocation algorithm, which can minimize the number of extra wavelength channels and latency caused by combining TDM scheme.

  • This paper shows a multiplexing technique to maximize the application of a moire-fringe based fiber optic sensor to lots of structure. Especially, a novel fringe-based fiber optic sensor was proposed to overcome the difficulty of multiplexing of a previous moire-fringe-based fiber optic sensor. The novel fringe-based fiber optic sensor is composed of a single reflective fringe and two optical fibers. Therefore, the multiplexing is easily realized because of the simplicity of optic structure inside the sensor. This paper also proposed four models of the multiplexing techniques. The models are based on a wavelength division multiplexing(WDM) technique and a time division multiplexing(TDM) one. Basically, the models would be profitable for a general extrinsic fiber optic sensor such as the fringe-based fiber optic sensor. Finally, the real optic system was manufactured by using the proposed model and successfully examined to prove the feasibility of the model for the application.

  • Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and multiple input multiple output (MIMO) technologies provide additional dimensions of freedom with spectral and spatial resources for radio resource management. Multi-dimensional radio resource management has recently been identified to exploit the full dimensions of freedom for more flexible and efficient utilization of scarce radio spectrum while provide diverse quality of service (QoS) guarantees. In this work, a multi-dimensional radio resource scheduling scheme is proposed to achieve above goals in hybrid orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) and space division multiple access (SDMA) systems. Cochannel interference (CCI) introduced by frequency reuse under SDMA is eliminated by frequency division and time division between highly interfered users. This scheme maximizes system throughput subjected to the minimum data rate guarantee. for heterogeneous users and transmit power constraint. By numerical examples, system throughput and fairness superiority of the our scheduling scheme are verified.

  • Cognitive radio (CR) has been proposed as an effective technology for flexible use of the radio spectrum. The interference between primary users and CR users, however, becomes a critical problem when they are using adjacent frequency channels with different transmission power levels. In this paper, a robust CR orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) architecture, which can effectively suppress interference to nearby primary users and overcome adjacent channel interference (ACI) to the CR user, is proposed. This new approach is characterized by adaptive data repetition for subcarriers under heavy ACI, and adaptive time spreading for subcarriers near the borders of the CR user's spectrum. The data repetition scheme provides extra power gain against the ACI coming from primary users. Time spreading guarantees an acceptable interference level to nearby primary users. By computer simulation, we demonstrate that, under a CR environment, the proposed CR OFDM architecture outperforms conventional OFDM systems in terms of throughput and BER performance.

  • We propose a nonreciprocal filter based on coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM) that reduces the upstream channel insertion loss in a passive optical network (PON). We also propose a method to increase the number of channels/optical network units (ONUs) in PON systems using the proposed filter to reduce the service cost per subscriber. Experimental results show that the PON system with the proposed 4-channel filter can reduce the power budget of the upstream and increase the number of ONUs by 3 to 4 times that of a conventional time-division multiplexing PON.

  • A high-performance time-division multiplexing (TDM) -based multiuser (MU) multiple-input multipleoutput (MIMO) system for efficient indoor visible-light communication (VLC) is presented. In this work, a MIMO technique based on RGB light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with selection combining (SC) is utilized for data transmission. That is, the proposed scheme employs RGB LEDs for parallel transmission of user data and transmits MU data in predefined slots of a time frame with a simple and efficient design, to schedule the transmission times for multiple users. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme offers an approximately 6 dB gain in signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at a bit error rate (BER) of $3{\times}10^{-5}$, as compared to conventional MU single-input single-output (SISO) systems. Moreover, a data rate of 66.7 Mbps/user at a BER of $10^{-3}$ is achieved for 10 users in indoor VLC environments.

  • We propose a new space-time block coding (STBC) for asynchronous cooperative systems in full-duplex mode. The orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission technique is used to combat the timing errors from the relay nodes. At the relay nodes, only one OFDM time slot is required to delay for a pair-wise symbol swap operation. The decoding complexity is lower for this new STBC than for the traditional quasi-orthogonal STBC. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme achieves excellent performances.

  • In this letter, we consider a new packet scheduling algorithm for an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing access/frequency division duplex (OFDMA/FDD)-based system, e.g., mobile broadband wireless access or high-speed portable internet systems, in which the radio resources of both time and frequency slots are dynamically shared by all users under a proper scheduling policy. Our design objective is to increase the number of non-realtime service (e.g., WWW) users that can be supported in the system, especially when the minimum bit rate requirement is imposed on them. The simulation results show that our proposed algorithm can provide a significant improvement in the average outage probability performance for the NRT service, i.e., significantly increasing the number of NRT users without much compromising of the cell throughput.
