Nonlinear time-domain system identification (SI) algorithm is proposed to assess damage in a shear building by synchronously estimating time-varying stiffness and damping parameters using measured acceleration data. Mass properties have been assumed as the a priori known information. Viscous damping was utilized for the current research. To chase possible nonlinear dynamic behavior under severe vibration, an incremental governing equation of vibrational motion has been utilized. Stiffness and damping parameters are estimated at each time step by minimizing the response error between measured and computed acceleration increments at the measured degrees-of-freedom. To solve a nonlinear constrained optimization problem for optimal structural parameters, sensitivities of acceleration increment were formulated with respect to stiffness and damping parameters, respectively. Incremental state vectors of vibrational motion were computed numerically by Newmark-${\beta}$ method. No model is pre-defined in the proposed algorithm for recovering the nonlinear response. A time-window scheme together with Monte Carlo iterations was utilized to estimate parameters with noise polluted sparse measured acceleration. A moving average scheme was applied to estimate the time-varying trend of structural parameters in all the examples. To examine the proposed SI algorithm, simulation studies were carried out intensively with sample shear buildings under earthquake excitations. In addition, the algorithm was applied to assess damage with laboratory test data obtained from free vibration on a three-story shear building model.
The vibration problems associated with gear coupled rotors have been the focus of much engineering work. These systems are complex and difficult to analyze in that they have the problems associated with conventional rotors plus those additional problems associated with the gear couplings. This paper examines the problems peculiar to the gear mesh. Because of the meshing action of gears, the elasticity of the gear teeth introduces time-varying stiffness coefficients into the governing equations of motion. This means that system response must be thought of in terms of Mathieu-type equations, where multiple-frequency response occur due to the periodic coefficients. The meshing action of the gears also couples the lateral and torsional gear motions. Gear errors, such as tooth profile and spacing errors, produce forces and torque that excite the system at multiple frequencies, some of which are much higher than shaft rotational speed. To investigate how to the time-varying stiffness in the gear teeth and the gear errors act one the dynamic response of the gear coupled rotors, a three-dimensional dynamic model with lateral-tortional oscillation is developed. The harmonic balance technique is employed to solve this mathieu-type problem.
This research presents an analytical model to investigate the stability due to the ball bearing waviness i n a rotating system supported by two ball bearings. The stiffness of a ball bearing changes periodically due to the waviness in the rolling elements as the rotor rotates, and it can be calculated by differentiating the nonlinear contact forces. The linearized equations of motion can be represented as a parametrically excited system in the form of Mathieu's equation, because the stiffness coefficients have time -varying components due to the waviness. Their solution can be assumed as a Fourier series expansion so that the equations of motion can be rewritten as the simultaneous algebraic equations with respect to the Fourier coefficients. Then, stability can be determined by solving the Hill's infinite determinant of these algebraic equations. The validity of this research is proved by comparing the stability chart with the time responses of the vibration model suggested by prior researches. This research shows that the waviness in the rolling elements of a ball bearing generates the time-varying component of the stiffness coefficient, whose frequency is called the frequency of the parametric excitation. It also shows that the instability takes place from the positions in which the ratio of the natural frequency to the frequency of the parametric excitation corresponds to i/2 (i=1,2,3..).

When a real robot manipulator is mathematically modeled. uncertainties are not avoidable. The uncertainties are often nonlinear and time-varying. The uncertain factors collie from imperfect knowledge ok system parameters. payload change. friction. external disturbance. and etc. In this paper. we propose a class of robust hybrid controls of manipulators without knowing the exact stiffness and provide the stability analysis. Simulation results are provided to show the effectiveness of the algorithms.
This paper presents an improved time series based damage detection approach with experimental verifications for detection, localization, and quantification of damage in shear-type structures under varying mass effects using output-only vibration data. The proposed method can be very effective for automated monitoring of buildings to develop proactive maintenance strategies. In this method, Auto-Regressive Moving Average models with eXogenous inputs (ARMAX) are built to represent the dynamic relationship of different sensor clusters. The damage features are extracted based on the relative difference of the ARMAX model coefficients to identify the existence, location and severity of damage of stiffness and mass separately. The results from a laboratory-scale shear type structure show that different damage scenarios are revealed successfully using the approach. At the end of this paper, the methodology limitations are also discussed, especially when simultaneous occurrence of mass and stiffness damage at multiple locations.
This paper presents a real-time haptic rendering method for a realistic force feedback in a remote environment with varying communication time-delay. The remote environment is assumed as a virtual environment based on a computer graphics, for example, on-line shopping mall, internet game and cyber-education. The properties of a virtual object such as stiffness and viscosity are assumed to be unknown because they are changed according to the contact position and/or a penetrated depth into the object. The DARMAX model based output estimator is proposed to trace the correct impedance of the virtual object in real-time. The output estimator is developed on the input-output relationship. It can trace the varying impedance in real-time by virtue of P-matrix resetting algorithm. And the estimator can trace the correct impedance by using a white noise that prevents the biased input-output information. Realistic output forces are generated in real-time, by using the inputs and the estimated impedance, even though the communication time delay and the impedance of the virtual object are unknown and changed. The generated forces trace the analytical forces computed from the virtual model of the remote environment. Performance is demonstrated by experiments with a 1-dof haptic device and a spring-damper-based virtual model.

In impedance control for contact force tracking it is well known that the reference trajectory of the robot is calculated from known environment stiffness. The accuracy of estimating the environment stiffness determines the performance of the resulting force tracking. Here we present a simple technique, called the trajectory modification technique(TMT), of determining the reference trajectory under the condition that the environment stiffness is unknown. Computer simulation studies have shown that force tracking using the proposed technique is excellent for unknown environment with time varying stiffness.
A semi-active algorithm for edgewise vibration control of the spar-type floating offshore wind turbine (SFOWT) blades, nacelle and spar platform is developed in this paper. A tuned mass damper (TMD) is placed in each blade, in the nacelle and on the spar to control the vibrations for these components. A Short Time Fourier Transform algorithm is used for semi-active control of the TMDs. The mathematical formulation of the integrated SFOWT-TMDs system is derived by using Euler-Lagrangian equations. The theoretical model derived is a time-varying system considering the aerodynamic properties of the blade, variable mass and stiffness per unit length, gravity, the interactions among the blades, nacelle, spar, mooring system and the TMDs, the hydrodynamic effects, the restoring moment and the buoyancy force. The aerodynamic loads on the nacelle and the spar due to their coupling with the blades are also considered. The effectiveness of the semi-active TMDs is investigated in the numerical examples where the mooring cable tension, rotor speed and the blade stiffness are varying over time. Except for excessively large strokes of the nacelle TMD, the semi-active algorithm is considerably more effective than the passive one in all cases and its effectiveness is restricted by the low-frequency nature of the nacelle and the spar responses.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of physical therapy plus Kinesio taping (KT) on muscle tone and stiffness in patients with shoulder pain. METHODS: This study included 22 participants who were divided into the experimental group (n=11) who underwent a routine physical therapy with KT and the control group (n=11) who received the same physical therapy only. The physical therapy consisted of heat application and electrical stimulation. Heat was applied for 10 minutes and electrical stimulation was conducted for 20 minutes. Intervention was provided over a 1-week period, and frequency for muscle tone and stiffness was measured to determine changes in shoulder muscle status. The muscles were supraspinatus and deltoid. Measurements were taken before, after 1day, 3day and after 1 week to identify time-dependent effects of intervention. RESULTS: The effects of the intervention were significant in both groups, and effects were greater in the experimental group. Changes in muscle tone and stiffness were statistically significant in both groups and at varying time points (p<.05). CONCLUSION: Based on the improved muscle performance found in this study, KT is considered an effective intervention strategy for patients with shoulder pain when it is combined with conventional physical therapy.
