A new algorithm using 1-dimensional wavelet transform for autofocusing of optical instrument has been developed. Previous studies based on the conventional frequency analysis have shown that as the lens-object distance approaches the optimum value, the high frequency energy in the corresponding image shows a consistent increase. However, as conventional frequency analysis techniques hide spatial distribution of each band energy, shape information in the original signal cannot be easily utilized. In this paper, a newly devised wavelet based focus measuring scheme is presented. Unlike other frequency domain analysis techniques that simply produce "frequency-only" spectra, wavelet analysis provides a "time-frequency" localized view of a given signal. As a result, both frequency band filtering and spatial distribution filtering can easily be realized. Depending on the proposed focus quality measuring algorithm, a fast and reliable automatic focus adjustment of optical devices could be implemented.
The purpose of this study was to determine the variability of components of the vertical ground reaction force signal to seek the suitable number of attempt datum to be analyzed during running at 2m/s and 4m/s. For this study, six subjects (height mean:$174.5{\pm}4.4cm$, weight $671.5{\pm}116.4N.$, age:$25.0{\pm}yrs.$) were selected and asked to run at least 3 times each run condition randomly. FFT(fast Fourier transform) was used to analyze the frequency domain analysis of the vertical ground reaction forces signal and an accumulated PSD (power spectrum density) was calculated to reconstruct the certain signal. To examine the deviation of the vertical ground reaction between signals collected from an different number of attempt, variability of frequency, magnitude of passive peak, time up to the passive peak and maximum load rate were determined in a coefficient of variance. The variability analysis revealed that when analyze the vertical reaction force components at 2m/s speed running, which belongs to slow pace relatively, it would be good to calculate these components from signal of one attempt, but 4m/s speed running needs data collected from two attempts to decrease the deviation of signal between attempts. In summary, when analyzing the frequency and passive peak of the vertical reaction force signal during the fast run, it should be considered the number of attempt.

The safe operation and reliable maintenance of nuclear power plants is one of the most fundamental and important tasks. It is known that a loose part such as a disengaged and drifting metal inside of reactor coolant systems might lead to a serious damage because of their impact on the components of the coolant system. In order to estimate the impact position of a loose par, three accelerometers attached to the wall of the coolant system have been used. These accelerometers measure the vibration of the coolant system induced by loose part impact. In the conventional analysis system, the low pass filtered version of the vibration data was used for the estimation of the position of a loose part. It is often difficult to identify the initial point of the impact signal by using just a low passed time signal because the impact wave is dispersed during propagation into the sensor. In this paper, the impact signal is analysed by use of various time frequency methods including the short time Fourier transform(STFT), the wavelet transform, and the Wigner-Vill distribution for finding a convenient way to identify the starting point of a impact signal and their advantages and limits are discussed.

This study conducts uniaxial compression tests on intact and single crack-contained rocks to investigate the time-frequency domain characteristics of acoustic emission (AE) signals monitored during the deformation failure process. A processing approach, short-time Fourier transform (STFT), is performed to obtain the evolution characteristics of time-frequency domain of AE signals. The AE signal modes at different deformation stages of rocks are different. Five modes of AE signal are observed during the cracking process of rocks. The evolution characteristics of time-frequency domain of AE signals processed by STFT can be utilized to evaluate the damage process of rocks. The difference of time-frequency domain characteristics between intact and cracked rocks is comparatively analyzed. The distribution characteristics of frequency changing from a single band-shaped cluster to multiple band-shaped clusters can be regarded as an early warning information of damage and failure of rocks. Meanwhile, the attenuation of frequency enables the exploration of rock failure trends.
The problem of sub-Nyquist nonuniform sampling for the perfect reconstruction of signals with time-varying spectral contents is studied. The signals are assumed to have a known instantaneous bandwidth in time-frequency domain. As the function of time, the nonuniform sampling pattern of a given signal, that is, the instantaneous sampling frequency is determined by the observation of instantaneous bandwidth based on time-frequency analysis. The proposed sampling pattern guarantees the perfect reconstruction of nonuniform sampled signals under Nyquist-sampling rate in average.
A heart sound algorithm, which separates the heart sound signal into four parts; the first heart sound, the systolic period, the second heart sound, and the diastolic period has been developed. The algorithm uses discrete intensity envelopes of approximations of the wavelet transform analysis method to the phonocard-iogram(PCG)signal. Heart sound a highly nonstation-ary signal, so in the analysis of heart sound, it is important to study the frequency and time information. Further more, Wavelet Transform provides more features and characteristics of the PCG signal that will help physician to obtain qualitative and quantitative measurements of the heart sound.
Advanced signal processing techniques have been long introduced and widely used in structural health monitoring (SHM) and nondestructive evaluation (NDE). In our research, we applied several signal processing approaches for our embedded ultrasonic structural radar (EUSR) system to obtain improved damage detection results. The EUSR algorithm was developed to detect defects within a large area of a thin-plate specimen using a piezoelectric wafer active sensor (PWAS) array. In the EUSR, the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) was first applied for signal de-noising. Secondly, after constructing the EUSR data, the short-time Fourier transform (STFT) and continuous wavelet transform (CWT) were used for the time-frequency analysis. Then the results were compared thereafter. We eventually chose continuous wavelet transform to filter out from the original signal the component with the excitation signal's frequency. Third, cross correlation method and Hilbert transform were applied to A-scan signals to extract the time of flight (TOF) of the wave packets from the crack. Finally, the Hilbert transform was again applied to the EUSR data to extract the envelopes for final inspection result visualization. The EUSR system was implemented in LabVIEW. Several laboratory experiments have been conducted and have verified that, with the advanced signal processing approaches, the EUSR has enhanced damage detection ability.

In this study, to design a multi-GNSS receiver using single RF front-end, the receiving performances for various frequency plans were evaluated. For the fair evaluation and comparison of different frequency plans, the same signal needs to be received at the same time. For this purpose, two synchronized RF front-ends were configured using USRP X310, and PC-based software was implemented so that the quality of the digital IF signal received at each front-end could be evaluated. The software consisted of USRP control, signal reception, signal acquisition, signal tracking, and C/N0 estimation function. Using the implemented software and USRP-based hardware, the signal receiving performances for various frequency plans, such as the signal attenuation status, overlapping of different systems, and the use of imaginary or real signal, were evaluated based on the C/N0 value. The results of the receiving performance measurement for the various frequency plans suggested in this study would be useful reference data for the design of a multi-GNSS receiver in the future.

The continuous Gabor wavelet transform (GWT) has been utilized as a useful time-frequency analysis tool to identify the rapidly-varying characteristics of some wave signals. In the application of GWT, it is important to select the Gabor wavelet with the optimal shape factor by which the time-frequency distribution of a signal can be accurately estimated. To find the signal-dependent optimal Gator wavelet shape factor, the notion of the Shannon entropy which measures the extent of signal energy concentration in the time-frequency plane is employed. The vibration characteristics of hyoid gears are experimentally investigated with backlash and tooth mesh frequency varied. Experiments are performed with two types of gear sets; well-machined and over-lapped gears. Through the experimental works, a constant torque 0.8kg.m is applied to th gears and a pulse type of trigger signal synchronizing tooth contact is used to measure the tooth mesh frequency and to average the gear vibration signal in the time domain. The time averaged vibration signals are frequency analyzed by a digital signal analyzer. The experimental results show the vibration characteristics of the two different types of gears in relation to backlash amount and mesh frequency variations are well differentiated by harmonic amplitudes and their ratios, and peak-to-peak amplitude of the gear vibration.
