In this study, considering the hydroelastic response represented by the springing and whipping phenomena, we propose a method of estimating the fatigue damage in the longitudinal connections of ships. First, we screened the design sea states using a load transfer function based on the frequency domain. We then conducted a time domain fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis using WISH-FLEX, an in-house code based on the weakly nonlinear approach. To obtain an effective and robust analytical result of the hydroelastic response, we also conducted an experimental model test with a 1/50-scale backbone-based model of a ship, and compared the experimental results with those obtained from the FSI analysis. Then, by combining the results obtained from the hydroelastic response with those obtained from the numerical fatigue analysis, we developed a fatigue damage estimation method. Finally, to demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed method, we evaluated the fatigue strength for the longitudinal connections of the real ship and compared it with the results obtained from the model tests.
Brillouin Optical Frequency Domain Analysis (BOFDA) is a distributed fiber optic sensing (DFOS) technique that has unique advantages for performance monitoring of piles. However, the complicated production process and harsh operating environment of offshore PHC pipe piles make it difficult to apply this method to pile load testing. In this study, sensing cables were successfully pre-installed into an offshore PHC pipe pile directly for the first time and the BOFDA technique was used for in-situ monitoring of the pile under axial load. High-resolution strain and internal force distributions along the pile were obtained by the BOFDA sensing system. A finite element analysis incorporating the Degradation and Hardening Hyperbolic Model (DHHM) was carried out to evaluate and predict the performance of the pile, which provides an improved insight into the offshore pile-soil interaction mechanism.

The purpose of this study is to suggest guidelines for riser fatigue analysis in terms of selection of reasonable analysis method. Three analysis methods (spectral, regular wave, rain-flow counting) are introduced and compared. As the riser systems give non-linear response, the time-domain analysis method is more preferred than frequency-domain analysis method. The spectral fatigue analysis method, however, is still useful for identifying fatigue prone areas. Once stress RAO is established, fatigue damage can be calculated very quickly. The regular wave method and the rain-flow counting method are more time consuming but give more exact results compare to spectral method. In case of regular wave method, a set of regular waves which represent random sea states is considered for dynamic analysis. The rain-flow counting method is the most intuitive and exact method because it refers time history stresses containing most of non-linear effects of the riser system. However, it is not common for early design stage to use rain-flow counting method because of its high cost. In this study, it was confirmed that the regular wave method is the most cost effective way in specific cases. However, if the system is highly non-linear, it seems that the regular wave method gives less accurate results than rain-flow counting method. Therefore, it is imperative that the engineers select appropriate analysis method based on design stage and given engineering period. This paper also discusses the theoretical background of each calculation method and hydrodynamic aspects of marine riser systems. A steel catenary riser (SCR) line on FPSO was considered and marine dynamic program (OrcaFlex) was used for static and dynamic analysis.
Offshore structures might encounter several environmental and operating conditions during their lifetime of several decades. In order to predict the dynamic behavior of offshore structures, several simulation cases should be considered to deal with all the combinations of ocean environments and operating conditions. Because a sophisticated time-domain coupled dynamic analysis requires an extremely large amount of computational time to handle all the possible cases, an efficient preliminary process to prescreen the probability of severe environmental conditions can be helpful in downsizing the number of simulation cases and computational effort. In this study, a prescreening procedure to reduce the number of environmental conditions for dynamic analyses of offshore structures is proposed. For the efficiency of the procedure, frequency-domain theories were adopted to estimate the platform offset, using quasi-static analyses in line tension prediction. The results were validated by comparing with those of dynamic analysis coupled between platform and mooring lines, and reasonable agreement was observed. In addition, the characteristics of environmental conditions classified to be severe to the system were investigated through the application of the developed prescreening scheme to several actual environmental conditions.

In this paper, we proposed a new algorithm of the inverse scattering for the reconstruction of unknown dielectric scatterers using the finite-difference time-domain method and the design sensitivity analysis. We introduced the design sensitivity analysis based on the gradient for the fast convergence of the reconstruction. By introducing the adjoint variable method for the efficient calculation, we derived the adjoint variable equation. As an optimal algorithm we used the steepest descent method and reconstructed the dielectric targets using the iterative estimation. To verify our algorithm we will show the numerical examples for the two-dimensional $TM^2$ cases.

As sea state harsher in the ocean space, more large motion and wave loads occurs on ships hull by non-linear phenomena. To consider nonlinear effect on ships hull in the structural design verification, the direct calculation method with numerical approach is used rather than rule values for the reliable accuracy. In this paper, the non-linear wave loads analysis in time domain is performed by using a Rankine Panel Method together with numerical schemes. Linear calculations have been carried out based on DNV CSA-2 notation to generate the motion responses and wave loads of large ships. By short and long term analysis, the design wave amplitudes are selected for the nonlinear analysis. The maximum wave induced bending moment in hogging and sagging conditions are calculated in the nonlinear analysis. Also, the green water effect on the wave induced vertical bending moment was investigated. The results show the vertical bending moments are more influenced by green water in sagging condition than in hogging condition due to green water loading.
The present study developed a numerical simulation tool for the coupled dynamic analysis of multiple turbines on a single floater (or Multiple Unit Floating Offshore Wind Turbine (MUFOWT)) in the time domain, considering the multiple-turbine aero-blade-tower dynamics and control, mooring dynamics, and platform motions. The numerical tool developed in this study was designed based on and extended from the single-turbine analysis tool FAST to make it suitable for multiple turbines. For the hydrodynamic loadings of floating platform and mooring-line dynamics, the CHARM3D program developed by the authors was incorporated. Thus, the coupled dynamic behavior of a floating base with multiple turbines and mooring lines can be simulated in the time domain. To investigate the effect of asymmetric aerodynamic loading on the global performance and mooring line tensions of the MUFOWT, one turbine failure case with a fully feathered blade pitch angle was simulated and checked. The aerodynamic interference between adjacent turbines, including the wake effect, was not considered in this study to more clearly demonstrate the influence of the asymmetric aerodynamic loading on the MUFOWT. The analysis shows that the unbalanced aerodynamic loading from one turbine in MUFOWT may induce appreciable changes in the performance of the floating platform and mooring system.
The study on computation time, accuracy, and convergency characteristic of the implicit finite difference method is presented with the variation of the space increment and time step in a two-dimensional transient heat conduction problem with a dirichlet boundary condition. Numerical analysis were conducted by the model having the conditions of the solution domain from 0 to 3m, thermal diffusivity of 1.26 $m^2/h$, initial condition of 272 K, and boundary condition of 255.4 K. The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1) The degree of influence with respect to the accuracy of the time step and space increment in the alternating-direction implicit method and Crank-Nicholson implicit method were relatively small, but in case of the fully implicit method showed opposite tendency. 2) To prescribe near the zero for the space increment and tine step in a two dimensional transient problem were good in a accuracy aspect but unreasonable in a computational time aspect. 3) The reasonable condition of the space increment and the time step considering accuracy and computation time could be generalized with the Fourier modulus increment, F, ana dimensionless space increment, X, irrespective of the solution domain.

Time Stretched Pulse (TSP) is used for transmitting and analyzing the impulse signal over the designated spatial place. However, if transfer functions of transmitter and receiver are unknown, performance investigation of free field in temporal domain is barely possible due to the overlap between the direct and indirect signal from the space. Generally, the free field or hemi-free field is evaluated by the Annex A of ISO 3745 in which utilizing the inverse square law with one-third octave band signals. In this paper, the author performs analysis of free field via applying TSP with inverse square law and the results are compared with the one-third octave band signals. According to the analysis of deviation between the corresponding signal and inverse square law model, the proposed TSP method provides the comparable performance index to the one-third octave band signal with reduced measuring time. Provided that the pre-whitening can be implementable by employing the speaker and microphone transfer function, further analyses from TSP compression are able to be performed such as multipath separation from time domain data. The anechoic chamber used in this experiment is verified conformance with ISO 3745 for free field and hemi-free field condition for limited frequency of the signal.
In this paper, by means of Lyapunov second method, the stability of IPD control servo systems is analyzed in the time domain for the first time. Based on the results of the stability analysis, the design rule to select the gain of IPD control is suggested such that the maximum error of output to the nominal system is guaranteed for all uncertainty and load variations. An example of a position control of a brushless dc motor is given to prove the unusefulness of the gain design rule.
