  • Korea has four distinct seasons, showing hot and humidity in summer and cold weather lasted in winter. Domestic research on earth work has been developed according to the seasonal characteristics, and most of research topics have focused on the effect of freezing-thawing on the performance of geo-materials. However, the previous research was performed on the ground compacted at room temperature and therefore, the effect of the sub-zero temperature at the time of construction was not fully investigated. The ground characteristics compacted at freezing temperature can be different from those at room temperature and show different characteristics of strength and deformation caused by freezing and thawing. Therefore, the compaction tests on sandy materials were conducted under various temperature at $-3^{\circ}C$ and $-8^{\circ}C$ with various fine contents of 0%, 5%, 10% and 15% in weight fraction. The effectiveness of soil compaction at below-freezing temperatures were compared with the compaction at room temperature at $18^{\circ}C$ in terms of the maximum dry unit weight and optimum water contents. Based on the test results, the maximum dry unit weight tends to decrease with the freezing temperature and the relative compaction at $-8^{\circ}C$ can not be satisfied with general specification standard.

  • Orthodontic traction has been suggested as the treatment of choice for intrusive luxation injuries. Prior research has shown orthodontic forces to be ineffective in the presence of ankylosis or in cases with zero mobility following the injury. If orthodontic traction is to be effective, it must be initiated prior to the onset of ankylosis. The purpose of this study was to describe the effects of intrusive luxation at various times following the injury, and to determine the time of the onset of ankylosis, and to examine what effect immediate partial luxation has on the onset of ankylosis. Eight young mongrel dogs were utilized for this study. Intrusive luxation was produced with an axial impact using a gravity hammer and a specially designed holding device on 4 teeth (2 max. and 2 man. first premolars) in each dog. The teeth were intruded approximately 3-4mm in an axial direction. One maxillary and one mandibular premolars were partially luxated with the other two teeth being untouched. Pre and posttrauma tooth position was documented with plaster models and radiographs taken with an individualized X-ray jig. Dogs were sacrificed immediately following the injury and at 1, 2, 4, 7, 10, 14 and 21 days respectively. Tetracycline was administered as a vital bone marker 24 hours before sacrifice. Block sections of the tooth and alveolus were prepared for decalcified and non decalcified histologic sections. The effects of traumatic intrusion were analyzed by means of model casts, radiographs, tetracycline bone marking and histologic preparations. The results obtained were as follows: 1. The animal sacrificed immediately following the injury displayed alveolar fractures, torn periodontal ligaments, and areas of direct tooth-bone contact. 2. The odontoblastic layer of the pulp was disorganized as early as 24 hours after the injury. 3. Bony remodeling was noted at 4 days along with active surface resorption. 4. Ankylosis was first seen 7 days after the injury. 5. Osteogenesis in the dentin (thick tetracycline bands) was observed 7 days after the injury. 6. There was no progressive root resorption and ankylosis where the periodontal ligament has been healed. 7. The Luxated group showed significantly more root resolution and ankylosis than the Nonluxated group with increased observation periods. The results suggest that ankylosis may occur within the first week following the injury, and hence orthodontic traction should be initiated as soon after the injury as possible.

  • Morphological and physiological alterations occur in the digestive system of weanling piglets, compromising the performance in subsequent phases. This experiment aimed at verifying the influence of glutamine, glutamate and nucleotides on the carbon turnover in the pancreas and liver of piglets weaned at 21 days of age. Four diets were evaluated: glutamine, glutamic acid or nucleotides-free diet (CD); containing 1% glutamine (GD); containing 1% glutamic acid (GAD) and containing 1% nucleotides (ND). One hundred and twenty-three piglets were utilized with three pigs slaughtered at day zero (weaning day) and three at each one of the experimental days (1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 13, 20, 27, and 49 post-weaning), in order to collect organ samples, which were analyzed for the ${\delta}^{13}C$ isotopic composition and compared by means of time. No differences were found (p>0.05) among treatments for the turnover of the $^{13}C$ in the pancreas ($T_{50%}$ = 13.91, 14.37, 11.07, and 9.34 days; $T_{95%}$ = 46.22, 47.73, 36.79, and 31.04 days for CD, GD, GAD, and ND, respectively). In the liver, the ND presented accelerated values of carbon turnover ($T_{50%}=7.36$ and $T_{95%}=24.47days$) in relation to the values obtained for the GD ($T_{50%}=10.15$ and $T_{95%}=33.74days$). However, the values obtained for the CD ($T_{50%}=9.12$ and $T_{95%}=30.31days$) and GAD ($T_{50%}=7.83$ and $T_{95%}=26.03days$) had no differences (p>0.05) among other diets. The technique of $^{13}C$ isotopic dilution demonstrated trophic action of nucleotides in the liver.

  • This study aims to examine the suggestions by studies that family predictors are related to developmental outcomes more strongly for children reared principally by their parents compared to those with extensive child care experience. Zero-order correlations between family predictors and developmental outcomes were conducted and the significance of differences in correlation coefficients between the two child care groups were examined. There was no evidence that there exist systematic differences between the two groups in predictive power of family factors except a few exceptions. At 2 years, social parenting style was more strongly associated with communication ability in the extensive child care group. At 3 years, some HOME subscales were related to a child's expressive and receptive vocabulary skills in significantly greater magnitudes in the mother care group. The findings also implied the potential contribution of child care environment on developmental outcomes for those who spend extensive hours in nonmaternal care.

  • At a time when world population and food supply are in a delicate balance, it is essential that we look at factors to improve this balance. We can alter the environment to better fit the plant's needs, or we can alter the plant to better fit the environment. Improved technology has allowed us to increase the yield level. For moderately detrimental weather events technology has generally decreased the yield variation, yet for major weather disasters the variation has increased. We have raised the upper level, but zero is still the bottom level. As we concentrate the production of particular crops into limited areas where the environment is closest to optimum, we may be increasing the risk of a major weather related disaster. We need to evaluate the degree of variability of different crops, and how weather and technology can interact to affect it. The natural limits of crop production are imposed by important ecological factors. Production is a function of the climate, the soil, and the crop and all activities related to them. In looking at the environment of a crop we must recognize these are individuals, populations and ecosystems. Under intensive agriculture we try to limit the competition to one desired species. The environment is made up of a complex of factors; radiation, moisture, temperature and wind, among others. Plant response to the environment is due to the interaction of all of these factors, yet in attempting to understand them we often examine each factor individually. Variation in crop yields is primarily a function of limiting environmental parameters. Various weather parameters will be discussed, with emphasis placed on how they impact on crop production. Although solar radiation is a driving force in crop production, it often shows little relationship to yield variation. Water may enter into crop production as both a limiting and excessive factor. The effects of moisture deficiency have received much more attention than moisture excess. In many areas of the world, a very significant portion of yield variation is due to variation in the moisture factor. Temperature imposes limits on where crops can be grown, and the type of crop that can be grown in an area. High temperature effects are often combined with deficient moisture effects. Cool temperatures determine the limits in which crops can be grown. Growing degree units, or heat accumulations, have often been used as a means of explaining many temperature effects. Methods for explaining chilling effects are more limited.

  • One of the effective ways to reduce both $NO_x$ and PM at the same time in a diesel CI engine is to operate the engine in low temperature combustion (LTC) regimes. In general, two strategies are used to realize the LTC operation-dilution controlled LTC and late injection LTC - and in this study, the former approach was used. In the dilution controlled regime, LTC is achieved by supplying a large amount of EGR to the cylinder. The significant EGR gas increases the heat capacity of in-cylinder charge mixture while decreasing oxygen concentration of the charge, activating low temperature oxidation reaction and lowering PM and $NO_x$ emissions. However, use of high EGR levels also deteriorates combustion efficiency and engine power output. Therefore, it is widely considered to use increased intake pressure as a way to resolve this issue. In this study, the effects of intake pressure variations on performance and emission characteristics of a single cylinder diesel engine operated in LTC regimes were examined. LTC operation was achieved in less than 8% $O_2$ concentration and thus a simultaneous reduction of both PM and $NO_x$ emission was confirmed. As intake pressure increased, combustion efficiency was improved so that THC and CO emissions were decreased. A shift of the peak Soot location was also observed to lower $O_2$ concentration while $NO_x$ levels were kept nearly zero. In addition, an elevation of intake pressure enhanced engine power output as well as indicated thermal efficiency in LTC regimes. All these results suggested that LTC operation range can be extended and emissions can be further reduced by adjusting intake pressure.

  • IN order to gain a fundamental data for forecast or control of fish behavior and evaluated the feasibility of an application of the modeling technique to a field, in this paper a numerical model for describing the behavior of fishes in a water tank was presented. The parameters of the model were estimated by using the time-series data on the three-dimensional position of fishes and by applying the least squares algorithm. The estimated parameters were standardized to examine the variation of parameters according to the number of individuals and flow speed that the mean values of parameters were to be zero and their variances were to be one. The results obtained can be summarized as follows: (1) The standardized parameter $a^*$of propulsive force decreased according to increased the number of individuals and the flow speed. (2) The standardized parameter ${k_b}^*$ of interactive force increased according to increased the number of individuals, but decreased according to the flow speed. (3) The standardized parameter ${k_c}^*$ of schooling force increased according to │increased the number of individuals and the flow speed. (4) The standardized parameter │${k_w}^{+*}$│ of repulsive force against wall or bottom increased according to increased the number of individuals, but decreased according to the flow speed. (5) The standardized parameter │${k_w}^{-*}$│ of attractive force against wall or bottom was generally constant according to increased the number of individuals, but increased according to the flow speed. (6) The standardized parameter $\upsilon$ super(*) of damping force increased according to increased the number of individuals, but decreased according to the flow speed.

  • In this study, we investigated the dietary habits, snacks, and self-purchasing snacks (SPS) intake behaviors of 519 elementary school students (boys=239, girls=280). Obesity was significantly higher (p<0.05) in boys (24.8%) than in girls (14.7%) and the proportion of underweight subjects was higher compared to normal or other weight groups for both the boys and the girls. There were 7.5% of the subjects in the group that always skipped breakfast, and the main reason of skipping breakfast was insufficient time (51.9%). The snack intake frequency was once or twice per week for 23.1% of the subjects and three or four times per week for 25.1%. The SPS intake frequency was the subjects zero for 35.6% of the highest level of the responders, while 6.8% of the respondents took more than once SPS per day. 59.6% of the respondents consumed SPS due to hunger while 15.0% consumed SPS out of boredom. The SPS was purchased from supermarkets in 34.5% of the cases, from convenience stores in 24.1% and from snack corners in 20.0% of cases or from a store near school in 14.5% of the cases. Analysis of SPS behaviors according to obesity index showed that parent's opinion of 'permission to buy SPS as needed' had a significant effect in 64.5% over weight subjects compared to only 53.7% in underweight groups. The subjects who used more than 3/4 of their pocket money to buy SPS was higher in the overweight groups (16.4%) than in the underweight groups (7.0%) and normal weight groups (9.8%). The favorite snacks and SPS were milk and yogurt for 45.7% of the subjects, fruits for 42.7%, ice cream for 26.4%, fruit juices for 23.8%, sweet stuff for 16.4%, frozen dessert for 8.9%, and chocolate or candy for 8.1% in descending order. The intake frequency of milk, yogurt, and fruit juices was higher in the underweight groups, but the intake frequency of sweet stuff, frozen dessert, and chocolate or candy was higher in over weight groups. The intake of frozen dessert was more than four times higher in the overweight groups than in the underweight groups. In conclusion, dietary habits, snacks, and SPS intake behaviors were similar between the boys and the girls and obesity groups, but most students appeared to have a high preference for intake snacks and SPS. Therefore, education for appropriate snacks intake habits will be beneficial for improving their dietary habits and health.

  • Benzene, one of the aromatic hydrocarbons, can be degraded by physical, chemical and biological processes in aquifers. This study aimed at analyzing separately the three different forms of degradation by performing column tests. Column tests using KCl and benzene as tracers were conducted for four different cases: 1) no hydrogen peroxide and no microorganism, 2) hydrogen peroxide only; 3) microorganism only; 4) hydrogen peroxide and microorganism to investigate the sorption and degradation of benzene. The observed BTCs of KCl and benzene in all cases showed that the arrival times of the peaks of both tracers coincided well but the peak concentration of benzene was much lower than that of KCl. This reveals that a predominant process affecting the transport of benzene in a sandy soil is an irreversible sorption and/or degradation rather than retardation. Decay of benzene through sorption and degradation increased with the addition of hydrogen peroxide and/or microorganism. Dissolved oxygen decreased with the increase of benzene in all cases indicating that degradation of benzene was also influenced by dissolved oxygen. For BTCs with the addition of microorganisms (case 3 and case 4), microorganism showed much lower concentrations compared to the initial levels and an increasing tendency with time although concentrations of benzene returned to zero, indicating a possible retardation of microorganism due to reversible and irreversible sorption to the particle surfaces.

  • Along with olive flounder(Paralichthys olivaceus), black rockfish(Sebastes schlegeli) is another very popular maricultured species in Korea. As there is many difficulties in handlling live fish for aquaculturist, use of suitable anesthesia for proper handling of fish is very important in the field. In this view, the effect of $AQUI-S^{\circledR}$ has analysed for its use in the field. $AQUI-S^{\circledR}$, contains 50% isoeugenol, is a new anesthics for fish and zero-withdraw time required since it was approved as a safe additives of food. In the present study, black rockfish adult exhibted sedation effect from 5 ppm at $10^{\circ}C\;and\;15^{\circ}C$, and 7.5 ppm at $20^{\circ}C$, on the other hand, anesthesia was at least required 7.5 ppm at $10^{\circ}C\;and\;15^{\circ}C$, and 10 ppm at $20^{\circ}C$. The fish was recovered from sedation and anesthesia after approximately 5 and 10 minutes, respectively. In case of black rockfish fry, sedation was recorded from 2.5 ppm at $20^{\circ}C$, and 5 ppm at $15^{\circ}C\;and\;20^{\circ}C$. The least concentraion of anesthesia was 2.5 ppm at $10^{\circ}C$, 7.5 ppm at $15^{\circ}C$, and 5 ppm at $20^{\circ}C$. The acute toxic test showed that black rockfish adult and nv showed mortality above 12.5 and 15 ppm concentration of $AQUI-S^{\circledR}$, respectivly. In sum, $AQUI-S^{\circledR}$ is considered as useful anesthetic drug for sedation and anesthesia of black rockfish, it is highly availbale to be prevented from a varity of stress.
