A Study on the Dispersion of Fuel Particles in the Homogeneous Turbulent Flow Field (균일 난류 유동장내에서 연료입자의 퍼짐에 관한 연구)

  • This study is to predict the lateral dispersion of the particles with time in a vertical pipe. Particle is released downward and located in the center of a pipe through which stationary, homogeneous turbulent air is flowing. We assume that gas turbulence velocities have a Gaussian probability density distribution and the presence of particle is not to alter turbulent structures. Particle trajectory is computed by numerically integrating the particle Lagrangian equation of motion, with a random sampling to determine the fluctuating air velocity experienced by each particle, which considered inertia effect and crossing-trajectories effect. The result shows characterestics of particle dispersion according to flow field condition and droplet size by using the parameters and scales, which expressed characterestics of flow field and particle. Predictions agree reasonably with experimental data.

  • Quickness and precision are the two most important requirements for an industrial scale used in production lines. In this paper, a new approach, "Dynamic-Mass measurement control System of Acceleration and Displacement(DMS-AD) sensing", is presented to improve some of drowbacks in conventional scales. The system, consisted of acceleration and displace- ment sensors, spring scale and microcomputer, is based on full utilization of dynamic mass measurement of acceleration and displacement via microcomputer-assisted real time monitoring. The rsulting system, when combined with appropriate dynamic mass estimation algorithm software, has shown its effectiveness in terms of two desirable characteristics required. required.

  • Current searches for gravitational microlensing events are being carried out only by a photometric method. In this review paper, we demonstrate that the nature of Galactic lenses can be significantly better constrained with the additional astrometric observations of microlensng events. First, by astromerically observing lensing events, one can resolve the lens parameter degeneracy, and thus the lens mass can be determined with improved precision. Second, by being free from the blending problem, astrometric observations of lensing events will allow one to improve the uncertainties in the determined Einstein time scales. Third, the lens brightness, which could not be measured photometrically, can be measured from the astrometric observations of lensing events, and thus the nature of lens matter can be better constrained. Finally, with the help of astrometric followup observations of a binary-lens event, one can uniquely determine the solution of lens parameters, allowing one to obtain important astronomical information about the source star and the lens itself.

A Case Study Approach to Attachment to the Father at Age One in the Strange Situation (낯선상황에서 영아의 아버지에 대한 애착에 관한 사례 연구)

  • Ten infants at 12 months and their fathers were videotaped in the Strange Situation. Each episode was divided into consecutive 15-sec intervals and infant behavior was rated on the six interactive scales described by Ainsworth et al. (1978). As a result of comparision of data of this study and Ainsworth et al., the Strange Situation was validated for the measurement of infant attachment to the father. It was suggested that the time of each episode should be curtailed and the 6th episode(baby alone episode) should be omitted for Korean. On the basis of the infant behavior ratings, infants were classified into the main A, B. C groups. As a result, 4 infants were classified as secure and 6 were insecure (4 avoidant and 2 resistant). Boys were more insecurely attached to the father than girls.

A FULLY EMPIRICAL APPROACH TO GALAXY EVOLUTION

  • Observations of large samples of galaxies from low to high redshifts are composing a picture of remarkable simplicity: (1) The star formation rate (SFR) of starforming galaxies scales almost linearly with mass, strongly decline with cosmic time, and exhibits very small scatter around the average relation. (2) Due to the high observed SFRs the mass of galaxies at high redshifts must increase very rapidly, and yet the mass function of star forming galaxies evolves only very slightly with redshift. (3) At all redshifts the fraction of quenched (passively evolving) galaxies increases with galactic stellar mass and with local overdensity, with the remarkable property that the relative efficiency of "mass quenching" is independent of environment, and that of "environment quenching" is independent of mass. In a recent paper by the zCOSMOS collaboration, Peng et al. (2010) demonstrate that these three empirical facts suffice to account for the observed evolution of the galaxy mass function and naturally generate the "double-Schechter" mass function for quenched galaxies.

  • The B-fields In STar-forming Region Observations (BISTRO) is the 3-year large program of the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) using SCUBA-2 and POL-2, started in 2016. We aim to study the roles of magnetic fields in star formation by observing 16 fields of nearby star forming regions, e.g., Orion and Ophiuchus molecular clouds. The angular resolution and wavelength provided by JCMT (14 arcsecond at 850 micrometer) is ideal to investigate the intermediate scales of magnetic fields (1000-10000 au) associated in cold dense cores and filaments. This year, moreover, we were awarded JCMT time for additional 16 fields (BISTRO-2), which allows us to cover broader physical properties of star forming regions. We report the current status of BISTRO and introduce BISTRO-2.

  • As a reactor coolant pump(RCP) is operated in the nuclear power system for a long time. so its surface is continuously contaminated by radioactive scales. In order to perform regular or emergency repair about RCP internals a special decontamination process should be used to reduce the radiation from the RCP surface by means of chemical cleaning. In this study, applicable possibility in chemical decontamination for RCP was investigated on the various materials. The STS 304 showed the best electrochemical properties for corrosion resistance than other materials. However, the pitting corrosion was slightly generated in both STS 415 and STS 431 with the increasing numbers of cycle and intergranular corrosion were sporadically observed. The size of their pitting corrosion and intergranular corrosion were also increased with increasing cycle numbers.

  • This study presents and algorithm and related techniques which could satisfy the important properties of check weighers and conveyor scales. The algorithm of Recursive Least Squares Regression is applied for the weighing system simulated as a dynamic model of the second order. Using the model and the algorithm, model parameters and then the mass being weighed can be determined from the step input. The performance of the algorithm was tested on a check weigher. Discussions were extended to the development of noise reduction techniques and to the lagged introduction of objects on the moving plate. It turns out that the algorithm shows several desirable features suitable for real-time signal processing with a microcomputer, which are high precision and stability in noisy environment.

MHD turbulence in expanding/collapsing media

  • We investigate driven magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence by including the effects of expansion and collapse of background medium. The main goal is to quantify the evolution and saturation of strength and characteristic lengths of magnetic fields in expanding and collapsing media. Our findings are as follows. First, with expansion and collapse of background medium, the magnetic energy density per comoving volume does not saturate; either it keeps decreasing or increasing with time. The magnetic energy density relative to the kinetic energy density strongly depends on the expanding or collapsing rate. Second, at scales close to the energy injection (or driving) scale, the slope of magnetic field power spectrum shallows with expansion but steepens with collapse. Third, various characteristic lengths, relative to the energy injection scale, decrease with expansion but increase with collapse. We discuss the astrophysical implications of our findings.

HOW TO MONITOR AGN INTRA-DAY VARIABILITY AT 230GHZ

  • We probe the feasibility of high-frequency radio observations of very rapid flux variations in compact active galactic nuclei (AGN). Our study assumes observations at 230GHz with a small 6-meter class observatory, using the SNU Radio Astronomical Observatory (SRAO) as an example. We find that 33 radio-bright sources are observable with signal-to-noise ratios larger than ten. We derive statistical detection limits via exhaustive Monte Carlo simulations assuming (a) periodic, and (b) episodic flaring flux variations on time-scales as small as tens of minutes. We conclude that a wide range of flux variations is observable. This makes high-frequency radio observations-even with small observatories-a powerful probe of AGN intra-day variability; especially, those which complement observations at lower radio frequencies with larger observatories like the Korean VLBI Network (KVN).
