The present study proposes a time domain model for the Vortex-induced Vibration (VIV) simulation of a catenary riser under the combination of the current and oscillatory flow induced by vessel motion. In this model, the hydrodynamic force of VIV comprises excitation force, hydrodynamic damping and added mass, which are taken as functions of the non-dimensional frequency and amplitude ratio. The non-dimensional frequency is related with the response frequency, natural frequency, lock-in range and the fluid velocity. The relatively oscillatory flow induced by vessel motion is taken into account in the fluid velocity. Considering that the added mass coefficient and the non-dimensional frequency can affect each other, an iterative analysis is conducted at each time step to update the added mass coefficient and the natural frequency. This model is in detail validated against the published test models. The results show that the model can reasonably reflect the effect of the added mass coefficient on the VIV, and can well predict the riser's VIV under stationary and oscillatory flow induced by vessel motion. Based on the model, this study carries out the VIV simulation of a catenary riser with harmonic vessel motion. By analyzing the bending moment near the touchdown point, it is found that under the combination of the ocean current and oscillatory flow the vessel motion may decrease the VIV response, while increase the excited frequencies. In addition, the decreasing rate of the VIV under vessel surge is larger than that under vessel heave at small vessel motion velocity, while the situation becomes opposite at large vessel motion velocity.

An analysis method is proposed for the transient linear or nonlinear analysis of dynamic interactions between a flexible dam body and reservoir impounding compressible water under earthquake loadings. The coupled dam-reservoir system consists of three substructures: (1) a dam body with linear or nonlinear behavior; (2) a semi-infinite fluid region with constant depth; and (3) an irregular fluid region between the dam body and far field. The dam body is modeled with linear and/or nonlinear finite elements. The far field is formulated as a displacement-based transmitting boundary in the frequency domain that can radiate energy into infinity. Then the transmitting boundary is transformed for the direct coupling in the time domain. The near field region is modeled as a compressible fluid contained between two substructures. The developed method is verified and applied to various earthquake response analyses of dam-reservoir systems. Also, the method is applied to a nonlinear analysis of a concrete gravity dam. The results show the location and severity of damage demonstrating the applicability to the seismic evaluation of existing and new dams.

The periodic domain-inversion in the selective areas of $Ti:LiNbO_3$ Mach-Zender waveguides was performed and band-pass modulators and single sideband (SSB) modulators were fabricated by using domain-reversal. The domain wall velocity was precisely controlled by real-time analysis of a poling-induced response current under an applied voltage. The domain wall velocity was significantly affected by the crystal orientation of the domain wall propagation which influenced the final domain geometry. In a certain case, the decomposition of $LiNbO_3$ crystal was observed, for example, under the condition of too fast domain wall propagation. The fabricated band-pass modulator with a periodic domain-inversion structure showed the maximum modulation efficiency at 30.3 GHz with 5.1 GHz 3dB-bandwidth, and SSB modulator was measured to show 33 dB USB suppression over LSB at 5.8 GHz RF.
In this paper we point out that if the classical principal domain for bispectra is utilized to determine a second-order Volterra model's output, such and output will be incomplete. This deficiency is associated with the periodic nature of the DFT. For this reason, the objective of this paper is to present an "extended" principal domain for Volterra kernels which leads to an improved estimate of the nonlinear system's response. In order to define the extended principal domain, we derive a new discrete frequency-domain Volterra model from a discrete time-domain Volterra model utilizing 2-dimensional DFT and the relationship between the quadratic component of the Volterra model and a square filter. The effect of the extended domain on the model output is interpreted in terms of the periodicity of DFT. Through computer simulations, we demonstrate the effects of the extended principal domain on the Volterra modeling. The simulation results indicate that the extended principal domain plays and important role in computing Volterra model outputs and estimating Volterra model coefficients.
In this study, dynamic characteristics such as natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping ratios of RC frame is determined for different construction stages using Operational Modal Analyses method under ambient vibration. Full scaled, one bay and one story RC frames are selected as an application for different construction stages such as plane, brick in-filled and brick in-filled with plaster. The RC frame is vibrated by natural excitations with small impact effects and the response signals are measured using sensitive accelerometers during ambient vibration tests. Measurement time-frequency span and effective mode number are determined by considering similar studies in literature. Sensitive seismic accelerometers are used to collect signals obtained from the experimental tests. To obtain experimental dynamic characteristics, output-only system identification technique is employed namely; Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition technique in the frequency domain. It is demonstrated that the ambient vibration measurements are enough to identify the most significant modes of RC frames.

This note proposes vibration-free motor control through modified LQG/LTR methodology. A conventional LQG/LTR method is a design tool in the frequency domain. However, unlike the conventional one, the proposed one is a time response based design method. This feature is firstly designed by parameterized settling time control gain through the target loop design procedure and the feature is secondly realized by loop transfer recovery. In order to show convergence to the target loop transfer functions, asymptotic behaviors of the open and the closed loop transfer functions are shown. At the conclusion, it is verified that the proposed method is robustly stable to parametric uncertainties through ${\mu}$-plot.

This paper presents a new hybrid approach for nonlinear dynamic analysis of the soil-structure interaction system in the time domain. It employs, in a practical manner, a linear SSI program and a general-purpose nonlinear finite element program. In order to demonstrate the validity and applicability of the proposed method, seismic response analyses are carried out for a free-field problem and a 2-D subway station. The results indicate that the proposed methodology gives reasonable solution for the linear/nonlinear SSI problem utilizing a general-purpose finite element program. Some further studies will endorse the applicability of the method to various soil-structure interaction problems.

In this work, a new formulation is presented for analyzing the transient electromagnetic response from wire antennas using the time-domain integral equation. The solution method is based on the Galerkin's method that involves separate spatial and temporal testing procedures. Piecewise triangle basis functions have been used for spatial expansion functions for arbitrarily shaped wire structures. The time-domain variation is approximated by a set of orthonormal basis functions that are derived from the Laguerre polynomials. The method presented in this paper results in very stable transient responses from wire antennas.

In this paper, we analyze the transient electromagnetic response from three-dimensional dielectric bodies using a time-domain PMCHW (Poggio, Miller, Chang, Harrington, Wu) formulation. The time-domain unknown coefficients of the equivalent currents are approximated by a set of orthonormal basis functions that are derived from the Laguerre polynomials. Numerical results computed by the proposed method are presented.
Two types of deformations can occur on the cable during the monitoring of the rock displacement by the time domain reflectometry. One is the impedance model for tensile deformation, and the other is the capacitance model for the shear deformation. The former gives a response signal with a gradual change in the amplitude of the reflected voltage, meanwhile the latter produces a signal with a blunted spike. The resolution of the TDR can be improved to 0.125% using calibration crimps on the cable of 60 meters long. It is recommended that the diameter of the cable should be 18 mm at least in order to induce a better reflected pulse without any open-circuit. The actual TDR technique cannot characterize the type and the magnitude of rock displacement quantitatively. Systematic investigation of the TDR parameters, such as the exact of cable diameter, cable length, number of crimps, combination of shearing and extension, and environment of the TDR equipment, will be able to improve the resolution to 0.01 mm.
