In this paper numerical wave propagation experiments have been performed to visually confirm whether the signals scattered by water masses can be a false alarm in active sonar. The numerical environments consist of exaggerated water masses as targets in free space. Using a pseudospectral time-domain model for irregular boundary, the back-scattered signals have been calculated and compared with analytic solutions. Also, the sound propagation was simulated. Consequently, it was verified that water masses themselves could not be detected as a false target.
We propose a robust tuning method of the quadratic criterion based iterative learning control(Q-ILC) algorithm for discrete-time linear batch system. First, we establish the frequency domain representation for batch systems. Next, a robust convergence condition is derived in the frequency domain. Based on this condition, we propose to optimize the weighting matrices such that the upper bound of the robustness measure is minimized. Through numerical simulation, it is shown that the designed learning filter restores robustness under significant model uncertainty.
Present study examines the numerical issues of cell structure simulation for various regimes of detonation phenomena ranging from weakly unstable to highly unstable detonations. Inviscid fluid dynamics equations with $variable-{\gamma}$ formulation and one-step Arrhenius reaction model are solved by a MUSCL-type TVD scheme and 4th order accurate Runge-Kutta time integration scheme. A series of numerical studies are carried out for the different regimes of the detonation phenomena to investigate the computational requirements for the simulation of the detonation wave cell structure by varying the reaction constants and grid resolutions. The computational results are investigated by comparing the solution of steady ZND structure to draw out the minimum grid resolutions and the size of the computational domain for the capturing cell structures of the different regimes of the detonation phenomena.

A floating Oscillating Water Column (OWC) wave energy converter, a Backward Bent Duct Buoy (BBDB), was simulated using a state-of-the-art, two-dimensional, fully-nonlinear Numerical Wave Tank (NWT) technique. The hydrodynamic performance of the floating OWC device was evaluated in the time domain. The acceleration potential method, with a full-updated kernel matrix calculation associated with a mode decomposition scheme, was implemented to obtain accurate estimates of the hydrodynamic force and displacement of a freely floating BBDB. The developed NWT was based on the potential theory and the boundary element method with constant panels on the boundaries. The mixed Eulerian-Lagrangian (MEL) approach was employed to capture the nonlinear free surfaces inside the chamber that interacted with a pneumatic pressure, induced by the time-varying airflow velocity at the air duct. A special viscous damping was applied to the chamber free surface to represent the viscous energy loss due to the BBDB's shape and motions. The viscous damping coefficient was properly selected using a comparison of the experimental data. The calculated surface elevation, inside and outside the chamber, with a tuned viscous damping correlated reasonably well with the experimental data for various incident wave conditions. The conservation of the total wave energy in the computational domain was confirmed over the entire range of wave frequencies.
Non-stationary random vibration of linear structures with uncertain parameters is investigated in this paper. A time-domain explicit formulation method is first presented for dynamic response analysis of deterministic structures subjected to non-stationary random excitations. The method is then employed to predict the random responses of a structure with given values of structural parameters, which are used to fit the conditional expectations of responses with relation to the structural random parameters by the response surface technique. Based on the total expectation theorem, the known conditional expectations are averaged to yield the random responses of stochastic structures as the total expectations. A numerical example involving a frame structure is investigated to illustrate the effectiveness of the present approach by comparison with the power spectrum method and the Monte Carlo simulation method. The proposed method is also applied to non-stationary random seismic analysis of a practical arch bridge with structural uncertainties, indicating the feasibility of the present approach for analysis of complex structures.

The time simulation of slow drift motions of moored FPSO in waves is presented. The equation of motion based on Cummin's theory of impulse responses are employed, and are consisted of horizonal plane -surge, sway and yaw. The added mass coefficients, wave damping coefficients, first order wave exciting forces and the second order wave drift forces involved in the equations are obtained from a three-dimensional panel method in the frequency domain. The mooring lines are modeled quasistatically as catenary for chains and touchdown. As for numerical example, time domain analyses are carried out for a box-type FPSO in long crest irregular wave condition.
This paper proposes a novel time-domain homogenization model combining the viscoelastic constitutive law with Eshelby's inclusion theory-based micromechanics model to predict the mechanical behavior of the particle reinforced composite material. The proposed model is intuitive and straightforward capable of predicting composites' viscoelastic behavior in the time domain. The isotropization technique for non-uniform stress-strain fields and incremental Mori-Tanaka schemes for high volume fraction are adopted in this study. Effects of the imperfectly bonded interphase layer on the viscoelastic behavior on the dynamic mechanical behavior are also investigated. The proposed model is verified by the direct numerical simulation and DMA (dynamic mechanical analysis) experimental results. The proposed model is useful for multiscale analysis of viscoelastic composite materials, and it can also be extended to predict the nonlinear viscoelastic response of composite materials.
Practical non-synoptic fluctuating wind often exhibits nonstationary features and should be modeled as nonstationary random processes. Generally, the coherence function of the fluctuating wind field has time-varying characteristics. Some studies have shown that there is a big difference between the fluctuating wind field of the coherent function model with and without time variability. Therefore, it is of significance to simulate nonstationary fluctuating wind field with time-varying coherent function. However, current studies on the numerical simulation of nonstationary fluctuating wind field with time-varying coherence are very limited, and the proposed approaches are usually based on the traditional spectral representation method with low simulation efficiency. Especially, for the simulation of multi-variable wind field of large span structures such as transmission tower-line, not only the simulation is inefficient but also the matrix decomposition may have singularity problem. In this paper, it is proposed to conduct the numerical simulation of nonstationary fluctuating wind field in one-spatial dimension with time-varying coherence based on the wavenumber-frequency spectrum. The simulated multivariable nonstationary wind field with time-varying coherence is transformed into one-dimensional nonstationary random waves in the simulated spatial domain, and the simulation by wavenumber frequency spectrum is derived. So, the proposed simulation method can avoid the complicated Cholesky decomposition. Then, the proper orthogonal decomposition is employed to decompose the time-space dependent evolutionary power spectral density and the Fourier transform of time-varying coherent function, simultaneously, so that the two-dimensional Fast Fourier transform can be applied to further improve the simulation efficiency. Finally, the proposed method is applied to simulate the longitudinal nonstationary fluctuating wind velocity field along the transmission line to illustrate its performances.

This paper presents a new numerical algorithm for the fault location estimation and arcing fault detection when a single-phase arcing ground fault occurs on a transmission line. The proposed algorithm derived in the spectrum domain is based on the synchronized voltage and current samples measured from the PMUs(Phasor Measurement Units) installed at both ends of the transmission lines. In this paper, the algorithm uses DFT(Discrete Fourier Transform) for estimation. The algorithm uses a short data window for real-time transmission line protection. Also, from the calculated arc voltage amplitude, a decision can be made whether the fault is permanent or transient. The proposed algorithm is tested through computer simulation to show its effectiveness.

The effects of subsurface inhomogeneities on the detection of buried metal pipes in ground-penetrating radar(GPR) signals are investigated numerically. To model the electrical properties of the subsurface inhomogeneities, the continuous random media(CRM) generation technique is introduced. For the electromagnetic simulation of GPR signals, the finite-difference time-domain(FDTD) method is implemented. As a function of the standard deviation and the correlation length of the relative permittivity distribution for a randomly inhomogeneous ground, the GPR signals of the buried metal pipes are compared using numerical simulations. As the subsurface inhomogeneities increase, the GPR signals of the buried pipes are distorted because of the effect of the subsurface clutter.
