  • This study aimed to predict changes in forest area using a probability density function, in order to promote effective forest management in the area north of the civilian control line (known as the Minbuk area) in Korea. Time series analysis (2010 and 2016) of forest area using land cover maps and accessibility expressed by distance covariates (distance from buildings, roads, and civilian control line) was applied to a probability density function. In order to estimate the probability density function, mean and variance were calculated using three methods: area weight (AW), area rate weight (ARW), and sample area change rate weight (SRW). Forest area increases in regions with lower accessibility (i.e., greater distance) from buildings and roads, but no relationship with accessibility from the civilian control line was found. Estimation of forest area change using different distance covariates shows that SRW using distance from buildings provides the most accurate estimation, with around 0.98-fold difference from actual forest area change, and performs well in a Chi-Square test. Furthermore, estimation of forest area until 2028 using SRW and distance from buildings most closely replicates patterns of actual forest area changes, suggesting that estimation of future change could be possible using this method. The method allows investigation of the current status of land cover in the Minbuk area, as well as predictions of future changes in forest area that could be utilized in forest management planning and policymaking in the northern area.

  • This paper considered the prediction of the tension force in the design of a TLP tendon, particularly focusing on the springing problem. Springing is an important parameter that exerts a large tension in special cases. It is a nonlinear phenomenon and requires the 2nd-order wave loads to solve. In this paper, a new prediction method for springing and the resultant extreme tension on the tendon of a TLP is introduced. Using the 2nd-order response function computed using the commercial program WADAM, the probability density function of the 2nd-order tension is obtained from an eigenvalue analysis using a quadratic transfer function and sea spectra. A new method is then suggested to predict the extreme tension loads with respect to the number of occurrences. It is shown that the PDF suggested in this study properly predicts the extreme tension in comparison with the time histories of the 2nd-order tension. The expected tension force is larger than that from a linear analysis in the same time windows. This supports the use of the present method to predict the tension due to springing.

  • The least squares cross validated bandwidth is the mini-mizer of the corss validation function for choosing the smooth parame-ter of a kernel density estimator. It is a completely automatic method but it requires inordinate amounts of computational time. We present a convenient formula for calculation of the cross validation function when the kernel function is a symmetric polynomial with finite sup-port. Also we suggest an algorithm for finding global minima of the crass validation function.

  • In this paper the change point problem of the error terms in linear regression models is considered. Since fixed or stochastic independent variables and weakly dependent errors are assumed, usual multiple regression models and time series models including ARMA are covered. We use the estimates of probability density function based on residuals in order to test the distribution change of the unobserved errors. Under some mild conditions, the test using the residuals is proved to have the same limiting distribution as the test based on true errors.

  • Flow patterns and its transitions in vertical two phase flow of air-water isothermal flow are identified objectively by void output signals and moments computed from the Probability Density Function which is associated with the statistical measurement for time average local void fractions using conductance probe. It has been shown that the probe output signals, PDF distributions and its moments are deterministic criteria of flow pattern and transition classification.

  • Acceleration time history used in the seismic analysis of nuclear porter plant structure should envelop a target power spectral density (PSD) function in addition to design response spectrum. Current regulation guide defines the target PSD function only for the U.S. URC RG 1.60 Design Response Spectrum. This paper proposes a technical scheme to obtain the target PSD function compatible with generally defined design response spectrum. The scheme includes the methodology for design-spectrum compatible motion history in order to minimize the variation of the derived target PSD function. The PSD calculation procedure follows simple and practical methods allowed within regulation. Effectiveness of the proposed scheme is identified through an example problem. The design response spectrum In the example is based on U.S. NRC RG 1.60 but amplifies the spectral acceleration amplitudes above 9Hz. The target PSD function with little variation can be constructed with the reduced time history ensemble.

  • In this paper, we have implemented a performance analysis of $2{\times}1$ Alamouti scheme suggested by Alamouti, composed of the transmit space-time code and the simple linear decoding processing, in perfectly time-varying and spatially correlated channels. In addition, we derived the closed-form probability density function (PDF) of the output signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the outage probability of the Alamouti scheme as a function of the spatial correlation coefficient in the consideration of no correlation in time. As a result, it was found that the performance of the Alamouti scheme could be significantly degraded particularly in the case that the channels are time-varying and spatially correlated.

  • Light Emitting Diode (LED) of 880 nm was used as a function of luminosity in culture of the photosynthetic bacteria including Rhodobacter sp.. An array of 880 run LED was driven with an energy density of $6.0mW/cm^2$. In processing time, we were able to show that the cell growth were gained of significant changes in the pigment and in the dry weight. And we also showed that photosynthetic bacteria had the resonable relativity of optical density to dry weight. LED-880nm is of great significance for the potential use of photo-bioreactor construction.

  • This paper examined dynamic characteristics of high speed trains using a time varying frequency transform. Fourier transform based methods are frequently used for the calculation of the dynamic characteristics of trains in the frequency domain, but they cannot represent the time-varying characteristics. Therefore it is necessary to examine their characteristics using a time-varying frequency transform. For the examination, the non-stationary vibration of wheelset, bogie, and carbody are measured using accelerometers and stored in a data aquisition system. They are processed with localization of the data by modulating with a window function, and Fourier transform is taken to each localized data, called the short-time Fourier transform. From the processed results, time varying auto-spectral density, cross-spectral density, frequency response, and coherence functions have been calculated. From the analysis, it is confirmed that the time varying frequency transform is a useful method for analyzing the dynamic characteristics of high speed trains.

  • In this paper, a random number generator for simulation of speech-waveform coders was designed. A random number generator having a desired probability density function and a desired power spectral density is discussed and experimental results are presented. The technique is based on Sondhi algorithm which consists of a linear filter and a memoryless nonlinearity. Several methods of obtaining memoryless nonlinearities for some typical continuous distributions are discussed. Sondhi algorithm is analyzed in the time domain using the diagonal expansion of the bivariate Gaussian probability density function. It is shown that the Sondhi algorithm gives satisfactory results when the memoryless nonlinearity is given in an antisymmetric form as in uniform, Cauchy, binary and gamma distribution. It is shown that the Sondhi algorithm does not perform well when the corresponding memoryless nonlinearity cannot be obtained analytically as in Student-t and F distributions, and when the memoryless nonlinearity can not be expressed in an antisymmetric form as in chi-squared and lognormal distributions.
