  • The mass flow rates and performance of natural smoke ventilators in high-rise buildings with 40, 80, 120 stories were evaluated using CONTAMW tool. The results showed that only limited part of smoke ventilators can have positive exhaust flow in high-rise buildings due to stack effect and wind velocities. In the higher story buildings larger stack effect can overcome outside strong wind effect to give more ventilation performance. The air tightness of the building have strong effect on the exhaust performance of the ventilators to give lower performance with loose air tightness of the exterior walls.

  • Unlike a typical static seals, spring-energized static seals exhibit improvement in leak-tightness by reinforcing the spring inside the aluminum lining. Thus, spring-energized static seals are widely used in various industrial fields, such as aerospace, semiconductors, and petrochemical industries. The primary objective of this study is to develop design guidelines for spring-energized static seals in a wide range of temperatures, including that of cryogenic environments, by analyzing the required performance and influence of design variables through simulations. There are various parameters that can be controlled to design a leak-tight seal. In this study, the finite element analysis (FEA) is performed by controlling the parameters related to the spring and the thickness of the aluminum lining, and the result of the leakage between the seal and the casing is confirmed. Considering the influence of each parameters, all of them are found to be important. However, it is observed that the spring-related variables are more important than the aluminum lining or other variables when complexity is considered. We can identify the threshold value of spring stiffness that changes leak-tight performance of the seal by performing FEA. Simulation results, under the conditions that are considered in this study, show that spring stiffness should be at least 3.6 N/m to maintain leak-tightness caused by the sufficient contact force between the aluminum lining and the upper and lower casings.

  • Various types of unit packaging methods were applied for 'Fuji' apples during short-term cold storage and export simulation. Gas tightness of the package was controlled stepwise in the successive two-year experiments using different perforation treatments (none, punch hole, or pinhole) and sealing methods (tie v s. heat seal). Risk of tight packaging and effectiveness of macroperforation on weight loss and quality maintenance were analyzed as related to changes in gas concentration inside the packages. Immediately after harvest, each 5 apple units were packaged in $40{\mu}m$ polypropylene (PP) film bags, stored 4 weeks at $0^{\circ}C$, and then put on the shelf for one week at ambient temperature in the preliminary experiment, In the main experiment, export process was imposed after storage simulating 2 week refrigerated container shipment at $0^{\circ}C$ plus one week local marketing at ambient temperature. Non-perforated film packaging with relatively high gas tightness induced flesh browning caused by carbon dioxide accumulation regardless of the sealing methods. Among perforated film packaging, in contrast, atmospheric modification was partly established only in the pinhole treatment and flesh browning symptom was not observed in all the treatments. Even the punch hole perforated film packaging without gas tightness effectively reduced the weight loss, whereas had slight benefits for quality maintenance. Reduced perforation using pinhole treatment seemed to improve sensory texture, while effects on physicochemical quality were insignificant. Overall results suggest the need of more minute perforation treatments on the packaging film to ensure modified atmosphere effects on quality maintenance.

  • Concrete used for radwaste container should have excellent properties such as mechanical strength, water-tightness, durability, etc. In order to improve such properties of ordinary portland cement concrete, superplasticizer, steel fiber, and/or epoxy resin were added to ordinary portland cement concrete respectively. Various concrete specimens were prepared and the physical properties of each concrete specimen were tested. From the experimental results, the properties of steel fiber and epoxy resin reinforced concrete were proved to be better qualified than others for low-and intermediate-level radwaste container.

  • The theory of fuzzy random variables and fuzzy stochastic processes has been received much attentions in recent years. But convergence in distribution for fuzzy random variables has not established yet. In this talk, we restrict our concerns to level-wise continuous fuzzy random variables and obtain some characterizations of its tightness and convergence in distribution.

  • Let N denote the set of positive integers. Fix $d_1, d_2 \in N with d = d_1 + d_2$. Let X and Y be real random variables and let ${X_i : i \in N^d_1} and {Y_j : j \in N^d_2}$ be independent families of independent identically distributed random variables with $L(X) = L(X_i) and L(Y) = L(Y_j)$, where $L(\cdot)$ denote the law of $\cdot$.

  • A very rare form of intrapulmonary cyst is an enterogenous cyst two examples of which were described by Ward and Krahl [1942]. Microscopically, the cyst wall is lined by gastric or intestinal type of mucous membrane which may include islets of pancreatic tissue; their walls contain muscle but no cartilage. We recently experienced a case of intrapulmonary enterogenous cyst. The patient was 30-year-old-male who showed chest pain and tightness after chest trauma. Chest X-ray revealed pneumothorax in both lung field with giant bullae in left upper lung field, right 6th and 7th rib fracture. Left lower lobectomy including cyst was done and the postoperative course was uneventful.

  • A technique for insertion of a long silicone T-tube in patient with critical stenosis and high-risk resection and primary anastomosis of long segment of the distal trachea is presented. It was not easy to insert a long T-tube by existing methods because of flexibility of a T-tube and tightness of stenosis. So we used a silastic endotracheal tube and guiding wire as stylet of a T-tube. During insertion, ventilation was normally maintained through the lumen of endotracheal tube. This provided rapid relief from airway obstruction and asphyxation and is a easy, safe and effective method to restore patency of the major airways.
