  • Water hammering in nuclear or thermal power plant condenser cooling water systems in mathematically modeled and numerically analyzed based on the method of characteristics. Effects of variations of the discharge valve operating condition and the system geometry on the hydraulic transients are investigated for the cases when all or one of four pumps are tripped accidently due to loss of offisite power. Effects of ocean waves and tides on the steady-state and the transient operations are also studied. Water column separation in taken into account whenever necessary by means of a simplified physical model.

  • The predictions of the local and regional sand transport of the offshore tidal sand banks tn the west coast of Korea, east of the Yellow San have been performed on the basis of diagrammatical method suggested by Kenyon et al(1981). There is general agreements between these predictions and the earlier predictions(Choi, 1983) of net regional sand transport paths from the numerical simulation of maximum bottom stress vector during the semidiurnal period due to m2 and m4 tides. Further detailed investigations are proposed for the study of Choongang Chontoe where the predicted net sand transport direction is to the dredged navigation channel.

  • Tidal propagation in the Keum River has been routinely handled by numerical integration of the long fravity wave equation by Dronkers. The dynamic equations include non-linear terms thereby reproducing the shallow water tides. The model was used to compute tidal distribution of the Kum River for aveage spring, mean, neap tidal conditions and further utilised to investigate the waterlevel response within tidal reaches by combined tide and flood discharge effects. The objective of this initial study is to investigate the tidal dynamics of the lower reaches of the Keum River under the condition of before-cross-channel barrage construction.

  • A tri-spine horseshoe crab, Tachypleus tridentatus (Leach, 1819) was collected from a sandy beach of Udo Island of Jeju during the full moon tides in November 1997. Three spines on the posterior margin of the opisthosoma were characterized indicating that the specimen was T. tridentatus. This specimen was a female with the total length of 49.5 cm and prosoma width of 23.0 cm. Tachypleus tridentatus was the first record from Korean waters. A brief description and figures of the species were given. This finding indicates that Korea is included to the distribution range of the species.

  • Vertical and horizontal distributions of chemical oceanograthic parameters were measured in Jinhae Bay in July, 1983. On the Masan-Gadeog section, high amounts of dissolved nitrates, ammonia, chlorophylla-a, and particulate carbon and nitrogen were observed in waters with low salinity. In the inner Masan Bay, high concentrations of dissolved ammonia and phosphates were shown. The C/N ratio in the surface waters was higer in the outer bay. Concentrations of dissolved inorganic nitrogen and phosphates in the surface waters seemed to be sufficient for red tides to occur.

  • Cochlodinium polykrikoides is one of the most harmful red tide dinoflagellates and is highly toxic to fish. Red tides due to this dinoflagellate have been reported in Korea, Japan, and other countries, and frequently cause severe damage to fish farming. Recently study has suggested that C. polykrikoides generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as superoxide anion ($O_{2-}$) and hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$), and the ROS-mediated ichthyotoxicity has been proposed. • Sea dike construction for the tidal flat reclamation works in estuary and coast may change the characteristics of tidal motion and wave conditions in the region. In turn, a new hydraulic condition provides the impacts on sediment transport pattern and forms a new morphological environment. Also, morphological changes during the closure works of sea dike are closely related with a safy of sea dike. Therefore, the prediction of morphological changes is required secure the safe closure work and the economic design of sea dikes. To investigate morphological changes due to sea dike construction, hydrodynamic changes of tides and waves have to be evaluated, then sediment transport and sea bottom changes are computed. Mathematical modelling is required for representation of interrelation of tidal motion, wave and sediment transport. In this study, numerical model MORSYS is applied to compute the hydrodynamics and morphological changes around the closure gap for Saemankuem dike. This model allows a flexible integration of the module for waves, currents, sediment transport and bottom changes.

  • The review presented herein covers most of previous works on tidal models of the East China Sea and the Yellow Sea performed over past two decades including some earlier efforts. General description of tides in the region is given based on both numerically derived tidal charts, current ellipses and intelligently drawn empirical tidal charts. Some aspects of bottom tidal dissipation, tidal mixing, tidal sedimentation and tidal circulation utilizing the numerical tidal models are presented, and further discussions on inherent problems and development of the models are also given.

  • Western coastal ports of Korea experience severe tidal range with up to 9.7 meter between high and low tides. The significant water level variation implicates many operational difficulties during loading and un-loading from cargo ships. To overcome problems due to tide and to secure the continuous loading operation, a new loading system for container cargo called "container pallet system" is developed and introduced in the paper. Three types of structure forms, offshore structural deck, double bottom structural form and the mixed form, are inverstigated with MSC/NASTRAN software. The results prove that the mixed type structure with truss enforcement is found to be the most appropriate for the region.
