  • Satellite altimeters have continuously observed sea surface height (SSH) in the global ocean for the past 30 years, providing clear evidence of the rise in global mean sea level based on observational data. Accurate altimeter-observed SSH is essential to study the spatial and temporal variability of SSH in regional seas. In this study, we used measurements from the Ieodo Ocean Research Station (IORS) and validate SSHs observed by satellite altimeters (Envisat, Jason-1, Jason-2, SARAL, Jason-3, and Sentinel-3A/B). Bias and root mean square error of SSH for each satellite ranged from 1.58 to 4.69 cm and 6.33 to 9.67 cm, respectively. As the matchup distance between satellite ground tracks and the IORS increased, the error of satellite SSHs significantly amplified. In order to validate the correction of the tide and atmospheric effect of the satellite data, the tide was estimated using harmonic analysis, and inverse barometer effect was calculated using atmospheric pressure data at the IORS. To achieve accurate tidal corrections for satellite SSH data in the seas around the Korean Peninsula, it was confirmed that improving the accuracy of tide data used in satellites is necessary.

  • In this study, we investigate tidal wave propagation characteristics, and classify regional tidal regime using tidal form number considered distribution of astronomical tide, overtides, and compound tides in the Han River Estuary, Gyeonggi Bay. The characteristics of the tidal wave propagation in main channels show dominance of major tidal constituents (e.g., $M_2$, $S_2$, $N_2$, $K_1$ and $O_1$) contributing to the astronomical tide however, distinct increasing of shallow water (e.g., $M_4$) and long period (e.g., $MS_f$) components toward up-estuary. Using the characteristics of tidal form number to astronomical tide, overtides, and compound tides, the regional tidal regime could be assorted into three regions. Firstly, a dominance area of astronomical tide was presented from open sea to a front of Incheon Harbor (Yeomha channel) and to north entrance of Seokmo channel. The area between south and north entrance of Yeomha channel and Ganghaw north channel classified into zone of showing strong shallow water components. It could be separated into upper estuary, upstream the Singok underwater dam, showed dominance of shallow overtides (e.g., $M_4$ and $MS_4$) water and long-term compound tides (e.g., $MS_f$) larger magnitude than astronomical tide. The shallow water components was earlier generated in lower part (south entrance) of Yeomha channel have strong bottom by effect of shallower and narrower compared with Seokmo channel. Tidal asymmetries of upper estuary cause by a development of overtides and compound tides are mainly controlled by influence of man-made structure.

  • The environmental elements which naturally occur can result in structural damages and operating faults of vessels under the navigation and mooring. These primary factors are considered as wind, waves and tide. In order to investigate wind shielding effects with respect to wind load conditions between two ships which face the wind directly or slantingly to the wind direction, this numerical simulation was preferred in terms of the variation of wind loads according to different distances, wind velocities and wind directions between two ships. The results were proved to be quite reasonable, comparing with experimental data from Danish Maritime Institute, and the report, "Environmental Conditions And Environmental Loads" published by Det Norske Veritas.

  • Heterotrophic activity, total bacteria and salinity were determined seasonally in the estuary of Naktong River over half tidal cycle. Heterotrophic activity was determined by the uptake of [U- $^{14}$ C]glucose. Heterotrophic activity fluctuated with the tides and was decreased as salinity increased. Teh great activity occurred near low ebb tide at all seasons except summer. The main environmental factor affecting hetreotrophic activity was the salinity rather than water temperature in the estuary of Naktong River. In order to estimate the effect of salt, salt was added to estuarine water. Vmax for glucose of salt-added water was 17% and 77% of original estuarine water at station 1 and 2 respectively and slight increase was observed at station 3. Respiration rate and Kt+Sn for glucose of salt-added sample increased at all 3 stations. The increase of the Kt value implies the reduced affinity of bacterial population for glucose. The effects of salinity on the heterotrophic activity were more extensive in the upper region of estuary than at the mouth.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the high saline water phenomenon of Handong-ri area in the eastern coast of Jeju Island, were investigate the tidal effect of groundwater level, variation of electric conductivity and temperature, geological logging on the monitoring wells, chemical water quality, and ratios of oxygen istope of groundwater and seawater Results in investigating variation of interface zone of freshwater and saline water represented that the hyaloclastites formed at below groundwater table is developing toward the coast; this area consisted of stratum of good permeability. Hyaloclastites is presumed the main path of the high salinity water There are a lot of movement by the tide at upper layer. Salinity of lower layer spreads to upper up step in proportion to tidal energy. Because of hydrogeological characteristics, Interface zone of freshwater and saline water is made, High salinity of groundwater occur in east coastal area of Jeju Island. Therefore, I think that high saline groundwater phenomenon is natural condition by simple mixing.

  • In this study, numerical simulations are used to analyze the effect of the south breakwater and weir on seawater flow change and circulation within the Gamcheon port. Flow patterns in the eastern direction are particularly affected by the breakwater during the ebb tide and current velocity is slightly reduced by construction of the weir. Additionally, seawater circulation is reduced by both features. In order to increase seawater circulation, a seawater flux structure is needed on the west breakwater. A weir-type structure will be more efficient than a seawater flux culvert.

  • Many bioactive photosensitizers have been isolated from plants and some of theses possess antiviral activities which, depend on UVA(320-400nm) and visible light. Many complex quinonoids have been isolated from plants and recently some of them, such as hypericin and hypocrellin, have been shown to possess light-dependent antiviral activities. these compounds only exert their desired biological activities in the presence of long wavelength ultra-violet UVA but these activities are also strongly influenced b chemical structure(Hudson et al, 1995). the importance of light in the use of certain medicinal plant extracts has been appreciated, if not understood, for centuries. Also, many seaweed extracts will effect photo(UVA, visible light) for algicidal activity. (omitted)

  • The purpose of this study was to observe the effect on the water quality and sediment environment by the use of Nano-S for anti-Red tide material. The experiment was performed at subtidal and intertidal zone during six months(from Aug 2005 to Feb. 2006). The experiment sites were divided with concentration of materials. One is lower concentration(0.1%) and the other is higher concentration(1%). The results of experiments didn't show the remarkable influence of the materials effect before and after applying the Nano-S and the red mud. pH, salinity and DO were slowly increased during experiment period but nutrients were conversely decreased in the seawater. In the subtidal zone, qualities of sediments, IL, AVS and COD, were gradually lowered and the similar results were appeared in the intertidal zone. These results showed similar trends over all the experiment sites including control site. The results of heavy metals also did not show the interest different effect before and after applying the Nano-S and red mud compared with control site.

  • Algal growth potential (AGP) assay using Cochlodinium polykrikoides was conducted in Saryang Island coast where C. polykrikoides red tide occurred annually from July to October 1998. The effects of macro- and micro-nutrients on the growth of C. polykrikoides were specifically evaluated by the algal assay method. Two different types of growth response of C. polykikoides for the addition of nutrients were clearly obseued. For both before and after C. polykrikoides occurrence, the growth of C. polykikoides was significantly stimulated by the addition of either nitrate or ammonium of $50{\mu]M$ with phosphate of $5{\mu}M$. The addition of a single nutrient had no clear effect on the growth of C. polyhikoides and the addition of trace metals, vitamins, and EDTA etc. did not stimulate the algal growth, also. This result indicates that both N and P potentially limited the growth of C. polyhikoides in this period. However, during a bloom of C. polyhikoides, the growth was unlikely to be stimulated by the addition of both macro- and micro-nutrients. At that time the nutrient concentration of Saryang Island coast was $24.33{\mu}M$ for ammonium, $1.61{\mu}M$ for phosphate, and $0.58{\mu}M$ for nitrate, respectively. The concentrations of nutrients increased, on average, 8.2-fold for ammonium and 4.8-fold for phosphate, decreased 3.3-fold for nitrate compared to both before and after the red tide. This result shows that the growth of C. polykikoides was not limited by the nutrients during the bloom in September. Therefore, our results suggest that the C. polykrikoides red tide may outbreak especially when the water is fertilized due to the increased N and P.

  • Introduction of wave model, take into account the effect of tide, wind and wave induced currents at the coastal waters of complex bathymetry, is a very important factor for most coastal engineering design and disaster protection problems. As the steady state spectral wave model could simulate depth induced wave shoaling and refraction, current induced refraction effect, steepness induced wave breaking, diffraction, wind wave growth, wave-wave interaction, and wave-current interaction that redistribute energy, this would support and compensate the gap in the real field of design where other wave models could not deal and cause wrong estimation. In this study, for better understanding and analysis of wave transformation process, we applied the spectral wave model to the large coastal waters near Gaduck Island where the Busan new port construction project is going on. We also compared the simulation results with the calculatea from the existing model. From such a trial of this study, we hope that broader and safer use of the spectral model in the area of port design and disaster prevention system come through in near future.
