  • The mass transport is very complicated at the area which has the macro tide and complex geometry such as Gyeonggi bay. Especially, the long period current has a strong influence on the estuarine ecosystem and the long-term distribution of substances. The long period current is caused by several external forcing, whose unique characteristic varies spatially and temporally. The variation characteristics of long period current is analysed and its generation mechanism is studied. The tidal nonlinear constituents such as overtide and compound tide are generated due to nonlinear interaction and it causes mean sea level setup. The tidal wave propagating up into estuary is transformed rapidly by decrease of cross-sectional area and depth. Therefore the mean sea level is getting rise toward upriver. The high and low tide level is similar between down-river(Incheon) and up-river(Ganghwa) during neap tide when the tidal deformation is decreased. The tidal phase difference between two tidal stations causes a periodic fluctuation of sea level difference. The low water level of Ganghwa station during spring tide does not descend under EL(-)2.5 m, but the low water level of Incheon fall down under EL(-)4.0 m. The variation of tidal range and its sea level are increased during spring tide. It is found that the long period current $M_{sf}$ is quite similar to that of sea level difference between the two tidal stations. It means that the sea surface inclination caused by the spatial difference of tidal deformation is important forcing for the generation of long period current.

  • In order to investigate the generations of rip currents modulated with the tidal elevations at a mega-tidal beach at the West Sea coast, numerical simulations of rip currents over the topography of the Daecheon beach were performed by using a Boussinesq-type wave and current model, FUNWAVE. The mega-tidal coast includes rocky outcrops (i.e., reefs) lying over or under the water surface according to the tidal elevations in the offshore and nearshore bathymetry. The offshore topographically-controlled rip currents were well reproduced due to the alongshore non-uniformities transformed by the tide-modulated topography. This study addressed the generation types of rip currents to occur at the mega-tidal coast with the tide-modulated outcrops and reefs.

  • In coastal waters, more often than not, waves propagate on currents driven by tidal forces, earth’s gravity, or wind. There have been a number of studies for dealing with the change of wave spectrum due to tile presence of current. Based on the conservation of wave action, Hedges et al. (1985) have proposed an equation which describes the influence of current on the change of wave spectrum in water of finite depth. (omitted)

  • On 31 March 2007, the abnormal wave occurred along western coast of Korean including Yeonggwang. In this paper, this event is studied using available field measurement data for the event analysis and numerical model for reproducing the unknown waves. We found several 1-min interval tidal elevation and mean sea level pressure (MSLP) data along the western coast of Korea and analyzed it using wavelet technique. We computed the arrival time and the propagation direction of abnormal wave using wavelet results and performed the numerical simulation using 2 dimensional shallow water wave model. The sea level under the forcing of air pressure jump was obviously amplified by the Proudman resonant effect. The computed sea levels compared with observations are underestimated, but the order of arrival time at the tidal station showed good agreement.

  • Understanding the penetration behavior of the spilled oil is very important to remove itself and to minimize its impact on intertidal biological communities by earlier treatment of the oil. The purpose of this study is to clarify the effects of wave and tidal actions on the penetration of spilled oil and to evaluate main factors of oil penetration using a sandy-beach model. Infiltration processes into the sediments showed significant difference between seawater and crude oil. Seawater was infiltrated by both wave action and tidal fluctuation into the sediments in sandy beach. However, spilled crude oil penetrated into the sediments only by falling tides and not by wave action, and the first tide is most important for the penetration of stranded oil. Over 70% of bulk fraction in penetrated crude oil was concentrated to the top 2 cm sediment-layer when spilled oil volume was 1 L/$\textrm{m}^2$. Moreover, the penetration of stranded oil into the sandy beach sediments was strongly correlated with the oil viscosity affected by temperature.

  • This study analysed the documents of Sea Area Utilization Consultation of JongChun and ApHae located in West Coast of Korea and NaJeong located in East Coast of Korea in order to find out problems of site surveys and numerical simulations for coastal erosion projects of ocean physics, and suggested the improvement way to go. Current especially like wave-induced current is the one of the important external forces to handle coastal erosion but underestimated in the west coast. In case of east coast the various tests including wave-induced current were conducted but less efficient to find out the reasons of coastal erosion. The stiffness structure to protect coastal line like beach made the secondary erosion by using them without sufficient analysis for the erosion. In order to consult a Sea Area Utilization Consultation those are needed to review the scenarios for external forces such as wave and tidal currents, the site surveys for external forces, the net sediment analysis for years, the long periods of monitoring, and the guide line and revision of the rule for coastal erosion.

  • The siltation of the Gun-San New Harbour is a serious problem to keep the available water depth of the basin. So, in order to make clear the behaviour of the suspended load flowing in and out of the Gun-San New Harbour obviously, the samples of the suspended load at the appropriate points were collected in the estuarine area near the Harbour and at the same time the tidal current velocities measured. Their suspended load concentrations and salinities were analyzed, and emphasis has been placed on the characteristics of the suspended load concentrations and on the relationship between the concentration and the tidal flow as well as the wave. As a result, the authors obtained the followings; 1) The main source of the suspended load in the Geum River estuarine area is transported from its upstream during floods and deposited rapidly due to the salt water, and the settled sediment is resuspended due to the tidal flow and the wave action, transported and settled again. Such a process is periodically repeated according to the tidal curve. 2) The concentrations are, in general, becoming larger with the increase of the tidal range and the wave height, and vice versa. Especially, the concentrations are relatively large in the winter season of which the wave height is larger than another seasons.

  • Cheonsu bay, which is typically a semi-closed type, is characterized by various environments such as channels, sand bars, small islands and tidal flats. The construction of Seosan A and B sea dikes from 1983 to 1985 might continuously change sedimentary environments in the northern part of the bay. In order to investigate sedimentary environment, surface and core sediments were sampled at the Hwangdo tidal flat and adjacent sea in June and October 2003. The surface sediments consisted of five sedimentary facies. Generally, the surface sediments in October were changed coarser on the tidal flat and little changed in the subtidal area compared to those in June 2003. Sedimentary facies analysis of three core sediments suggested that wave and tidal current were relatively strong in the tidal flat near Hwangdo, whereas the energy was relatively low in the tidal flat near channel. Sediment accumulation rates in the Hwangdo tidal flat during 11 months indicated that sediments deposited in the central part, whereas eroded in eastern and western sides of the tidal flat. These caused that sea dike changed tidal current patterns and sediment supplies.

  • The speed trial of a ship is one of the important elements guaranteeing its performance under the contract between the ship owner and shipbuilding company. A speed trial at sea, where the tidal current and waves are suppressed to the maximum, can prevent measurement errors due to external force conditions. On the other hand, it is difficult to maintain a calm sea state in most sea areas determined by the influence of the tidal current, wave, wind, etc. Therefore, this study evaluated a method of simulating a tidal current, which is one of the external force conditions, at the speed test operation of a ship, and applied the simulation result to the plan of a speed trial.

  • Tidal asymmetry which is generated at the mouth of an estuary tends to be more serious toward the upper stream due to the growth of shallow tides. Thus careful observations and applications for the shallow tides are needed if studies related to sediment or pollutant transport are carried on. An aim of the present study was to clarify the characteristics of generation and propagation of shallow tides by various numerical experiments including the effect of inter-tidal zone. The results of the present study will give a fundamental guide for the analysis of tidal envirorunental changes and for the design of a numerical model if coastal constructions are conducted.
